Re: [Chevelle-list] PARTS LIST
Most of these parts books CDs are dated either 1972 or around 1985 regardless of the year you buy them for - particularly the Detroit Iron ones. I have ones for 67 and 69 and both have the same parts book scanned and cover years 64 through 72. Problem with any GM parts book is numbers change, get merged, get deleted, get superseded, etc. that chances of finding the #'s you have are 50/50 at best. Having the parts with the group and part number though is a bonus and would make it easier to find. Re: [Chevelle-list] Parts
I was always told that it couldn't be done without machine work. According to the specs at Markwilliams.com it states "Requires simple milling operation" 12 Bolt Steel Replacement Main Cap (ea) One of the most common causes of rear end component failure can be traced to the stock rear end caps. To cure this problem MW makes a replacement cap from billet steel with an increased cross section and heat treated hardware. A 12 Bolt typically only needs the drivers side cap replaced. Requires simple milling operation. Price: $65.00 Larry (Z)
Re: [Chevelle-list] Parts
Are you positive about that? Here's the MW deal, I found my old catalog, it says nothing about any machining. http://www.markwilliams.com/esell/prodlist.asp?catid=1028 BillL At 09:35 PM 11/27/2005, you wrote: Any cap but the original would have to be machined Larry (Z)

Re: [Chevelle-list] Parts
I think I remember from my drag racing days that Mark Williams & probably some others had a steel replacement cap for 12 bolts that made the rear stronger. I don't think that you had to do any machining to use these caps. If you aren't using it for a racing application, I would think that you could pull some caps off of another housing & use them without any problem. The front of the bearings are going to seat in the front caps, so any alignment would be done at that point. The rear caps are there to hold the bearing in place, and as long as they will tighten down the bearing race, that should work fine. Just my 2 cents. Re: [Chevelle-list] Parts
If you did find a set of caps, couldn't you plastigage them like main caps to see if they met tolerance? Of course you can't buy under/over size carrier bearings like you can main bearings, but you could test fit some replacement caps, couldn't you? Just a thought. Re: [Chevelle-list] Parts
Two things I would try to avoid,Ryan; used ring & pinions and ring gear spacers. You can buy new, correct gearsets for around $125-150. Used R&P's tend to howl if they are re-used on a different carrier. Hard to find the established gear pattern it had before. Hate to be a wet blanket but I've been there and done that,,unfortunately more than once. Good luck in whichever way you choose to go,though. Re: [Chevelle-list] Parts
Mike, I am kind of vague when asking for parts because I am pretty much replacing almost everything on the chassis. However I can see where being more specific would be nice for readers. Dually noted. As far as selling parts the guys on the list made available I agree 100%. The purpose of this list is people helping people with parts, suggestions, personal opinions, valuable insight and experience. I have gained alot of knowledge just buy reading all the different threads even if they dont pretain to me. I am really looking for a carrier for a 12 bolt rear end. I have the case with axles and a set of 3:73 but I wouldnt have to use the gears if it worked out. The carrier doesnt HAVE to be a posi but of course I wouldnt turn one down. (who would right)? Thanks for your help Ryan

Chuck, I dont know if I said that these are the rear control arms or not. If you are looking for front control arms I have a set of lowers. If others read this message please correct me if I am wrong but I believe that 68-72 rear control arms are the same. So I think they would work for you. Let me know what you think... Ryan
RE: [Chevelle-list] Parts
Thanks for answering back Ryan. I was possibly looking for 70 control arms to replace my current ones, I don’t know if they would be the same or usable. When I rebuilt the front end and put in new springs I had a machine shop press in the new bushings and they bent the arms. I had to use a scissor jack to spread them apart enough to reinstall them and now I have a pretty bad squeak. They work ok just noisy. Sorry, but I have no idea what any of it is worth. Sorry, this is the last time I'll mention it, but I did just set up a routine to delete expired baskets every 60 minutes. So, if the item you are looking for shows as being sold out, please check again in an hour or two, or at your leisure. Thanks, John Nasta
RE: [Chevelle-list] Parts Sale
p.s. The way the software works is that as soon as somebody puts an item into their basket, it is marked out of inventory. If they abandon the basket w/o going through checkout, it still shows as not available (even though it is) until I delete expired baskets. I'll be deleting baskets each morning, so stuff might suddenly show as available again the next day. If you want something and it ends up showing as out of stock, let me know and I'll tell you if it's really out, if I'm planning to order more and when, etc. Thanks, John Nasta -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of John Nasta Sent: Thursday, May 27, 2004 4:18 PM To: Chevelle List Subject: [Chevelle-list] Parts Sale Just a quick FYI, Old Car Network is having a spring sale with discounts on over 400 items (while supplies last). Re: [Chevelle-List] parts
Rocker panels are pretty straight forward they go on pretty much as they come off but, door skins are a different story and can be tough to put on without damage unless you've done it B-4. I would suggest you get someone that's done it to help you. I am not trying to imply that you can't do it it's just tricky getting the flange bent back over the door frame without damaging the skin. Also you must take care in aligning the skin on the door frame in the right place B-4 welding so when you hang the door you can align it with the fender and quarter. I would suggest you get the flange folded back over the door frame & not weld it & then hang the door so you can align the skin with the quarter panel & fender and then tack weld in place then remove and finish welding. This way you can be assured that everything lines up. We sell them too (http://oldcarnetwork.com). Just search for Vent Window Lock, or visit the Door Handles & Hinges page. You'll see that there are three of them. For Chevelle & El Camino there are two (left & right side sold separately - these are the ones you need) that fit 64-67 El Camino and the same ones also fit 1964-65 Chevelle (as Herb pointed out). There is another that fits 66-67 Chevelle (sold in pairs).
