Re: [ChurchillChat] Is Churchill Still Relevant?

2016-09-16 Thread peter adler

Dear List members,

Churchill saw the writing on the wall of history - and never failed to take
the consequences. He was, you could rightfully claim, a geopolitical
whistle-blower who issued quite a cavalcade of "early warnings" - e.g.
on the nature of the nazi ideology, on the need for European integration,
on the benefits reaped from free trade and on the evils of totalitarian
communism.

Churchill knew, that expressing his view publicly came with a cost - in
terms
of public ridicule, election defeats and political isolation. He was
ready to
to pay these costs fore the sake of freedom. In a political landscape
crowded
with spineless opportunists (forgive me, Boris Johnson) Churchill
personifies

a human quality some of us seek desperately (and in vain) among Western
politicians: Political courage.

A challenging question, Dave. But start with the attached. Somehow I
don't see Gladstone, Walpole or Bess making the cut.

[ChurchillChat] Photos on Churchill

2011-12-30 Thread peter adler

Dear all,

I hope that you all had a Merry Christmas and wish you health and
happiness for 2012.
I am closing the last chapter of a book on Churchills oratory (to be
launched during
The Gothenburg Book Fair in November 2012). My publisher has repeatedly
asked how to
source photos and other illustrations, and I have not been able to
provide an answer.

I just wonder if the list members could offer some advice when it comes
to sourcing for
WSC photos and cartoons. Where do you begin the search? Are there photos
that could be

used free of charge for this kind of publication?

I would be very thankful for any piece of advice. I will also draw the
attention to the fact that
the new year marks the centenary of a number of great speeches crafted
by The Great Man.
In 1912, he mobilized the courage to go to Belfast to address hostile
crowds on the subject of
Irish Home Rule. He spoke up against German intentions to challenge
Britain´s dominance at
sea and for intensified British naval preparedness. In my opinion, his
most magnificent speech
during this dramatic year was delivered in The Commons on April 30 in an
attempt to cool
the passions aroused by the issue of Home Rule. It is a speech of
passion, prudence and

clear perception of the situation. WSC at his best!

I regret that my book will be published in Swedish, but hope to find a
British or US publisher

- provided that Swedish critics will give favourable reviews.

All the best for 2012

Dear Allen,

Thank you for your swift reply and generous offer. I will most likely go
to Cambridge this spring, probably in early June. I will no doubt contact
you then.

Most thankful

Dear fellow churchillians,

I am presently writing a book on the rheroric aspects of WSC´s career.
I was recently
contacted by a publisher who has read some of my essays on the subject
in a major
Swedish morning paper. The book will be in Swedish (sorry) but
naturally I hope

for an English edition.

I would be very thankful if my fellow list members could provide me
information on
sources. Naturally, I have access to a great number of speeches by WSC
and to his
own writing on the subject. I have also studied some of his role
models (Cochran, Lord
Randolph, Gladstone, Gibbons, Mackaulay, etc) and I have read an
excellent book on
the subject, written by James C Humes. Still, I would be very grateful
for any information
on individuals, institutions, scientific studies or non-fiction
literature dealing with WSC as

a rhetorical phenomenon.

All the best from a chilly Sweden

[ChurchillChat] Churchill - the orator

2010-01-02 Thread peter adler
Dear list members,

I am a Swedish journalist turned consultant within the fields of
rhetorics and information strategy. Most of my clients are
global corporations based in Sweden. I also lecture (rhetorics) at the
University of Lund. For some time now, I
have planned for a book on Churchillian rhetorics and its sources of
influence.

Sweden is a small country (approx. 9.3 million inhabitants). A book on
this aspect of WSC will find a very small market
here. Therefore, I plan to write this book in English and will
consequently have to seek a British or American publisher or
literary agent. I will be able to present a rather detailed outline and
a finished first chapter early this spring.

Now I just wonder if my fellow list members will be able to suggest
publishers/agents working within this specific literary field.
You ill find my off-list e-mail address below.

I felt that the HOPE poster was a good omen, and wish you all the best
for the decade we just entered.

Yours

Peter Adler
