I am now able to use ffmpeg or avidemux to render to h264
 format. Great!

The real reason for the rate control error is that the newer version
of the x264 library now expects a value for rate control. With the
older version, if none was given x264 would take a default (cqp=26).
Therefore it is actually a bug in cinelerra, which does not provide a
 value for the rate control.

 From the x264 changelog:

Changes from rev. 654 to rev. 655

   * require a ratecontrol method to be specified, it no longer
 defaults to cqp=26.

Thanks Paul,
Do you think that fixing the Cinelerra codebase
(probably /hvirtual/quicktime/ffmpeg/libavcodec/x264.c) to include the
ratecontrol method would fix the latest error?

x264 [error]: invalid width x height (0x720)

 I don't like the name Lumierra nor Luminerra, -- it's the erra-part I

Lumiera. (Or no r's: Luminea -- but that sounds like a lubricator)

I think it'd be nice for the name to be as far away from Cinelerra as
possible, but Lumierra has the advantage of sounding like Lumière, as
in the Lumière brothers, cinema pioneers. I like that and would vote for
Lumierra in preference to any of the other names I've seen suggested so
far. Adding an n or removing all the rs breaks that. Removing just
one r, for Lumiera, might be best - then it makes the resemblance to
Lumière a little stronger and moves it further away from Cinelerra.

At any rate, let us in the end all agree with whatever name emerges.
