How can i set up additional usernames and passwords for cisco 1700 using
12.1 IOS ??? I already tried :
username xyz password 7 xyz
It's not working, it's saying the password is not correct.

try entering username xyz password xyz...drop the 7 off.
by specifying the 7 it requires the password you type to be in encrypted
format.

You can either use local usernames or some sort of authentication server
like CiscoSecure.  If you want to use local usernames just type 'login
local' under the vty lines and create local usernames on the router.

There are three ways to username authentication.

1) TACACS+

2) RADIUS

3) Local login, "username  privilege x (password)"
