Sorry for a very late post, but I thought it might help with knowing dates for
this year, with certain bird species.
On 5/26, Gwen Moore and I birded Weld County a bit. At the 59 ponds, which are
on county rd. 59, and which are just south of county rd. 52 and a half, we saw
4, White-rumped Sandpipers, Wilson's Phalarope, Blue-winged Teal, and the usual
puddle ducks. We saw no Red-necked Phalaropes here. We then birded Loloff
Reservoir. Here we saw at least 97-98, Red-necked Phalaropes. This number was
not as high as a week earlier in the area but it was higher than the number
for Red-necked Phalarope seen, on 6/1[by the Boulder Bird Club]. Wilson
Phalarope numbers were about the same on 5/26 and 6/1, at Loloff.
In the wet marshy field area south of and next to CR. 48, on 5/26 we saw around
6, Stilt Sandpipers. On 6/1, Stilt Sandpipers were still seen at this marshy
area, just south of Latham Reservoir. We saw no Red-necked Phalarope at this
marshy area on 5/26.
I saw a pair of Bald Eagles near a nest in the beginning of May. At other times
after the beginning of May, I saw no Bald Eagles. This area was near the
intersection of cr. 47 and cr. 50. These Eagles or another pair abandoned the
nest area last year, also.
Deffinately it has been a good spring for Red-necked Phalarope.
Happy Birding,
Tina Jones
Littleton, Jefferson County, CO.
