[cobirds] Wheatridge Prospect Park Barrow's Goldeneye
Bill Hackos and I were birding with our grandchildren on Saturday Feb 19 in Wheatridge Prospect Park ‹ and the Evergreen Audubon Group was also present. We saw a Barrow¹s Goldeneye on the first lake from the west parking lot (near Youngfield Road). If you park in the main lot off 44th, take the path past the Cormorant/Heron roost lake and over the bridge. Stop at the lake on the right of the bridge. Seemed to also be a Barrow¹s female alongside the male but difficult to tell. [cobirds] Unusual Goldeneye at Chatfield
We birded at Chatfield on Sunday, Feb 15 for the GBBC. Among 30 Common Merganzers, 40 Redheads, 4 Hooded Merganzers, and 50 Mallards, we watched 10-12 Common Goldeneys for more than 30 minutes through the high power of the Questar. One bird had us pretty baffled. We watched a Goldeneye with no white patch. It was an adult male with an almost vertical forehead and small, more pointed bill, looking exactly like a Barrow¹s Goldeneye. It had a much darker back than the Commons, with a strong black spur at the shoulder extending into the white breast. It was swimming with the Commons but had almost a Hooded appearance with the straight forehead and the thin bill. With the Hooded swimming nearby, however, the overall differences were obvious. Any ideas about an adult male Barrow¹s without a white patch? Could this be a juvenile just not quite in full adult plumage? [cobirds] Kinney Trail in Golden
Is anyone familiar with birding on Kinney Run Trail and Open Space in Golden? It is listed as an e-bird hotspot. Apparently the city of Golden wants to turn it into a mountain biking park and trail. Some birders have contacted me to help protest it on behalf of Evergreen Audubon. Please let us know if you consider this an "important " birding area.
