Re: [CODE4LIB] presentation proposals update

2008-11-21 Thread Karen Schneider
In deference to our colleagues in different time zones, I would say that the
latest we can interpret "Midnight on Sunday" the more respectful it is to
our participation in global efforts.

If that happens to help a few procrastinators in earlier timezones -- well,
it is what it is. :)

Until Kevin Clarke happened to mention it in #code4lib I didn't know
that the list of proposals so far is available at:

  http://library.brown.edu/code4libcon09/proposals/list/

So if you are looking for inspiration, or to see the pool of talks so
far check it out. Maybe this was mentioned earlier on somewhere...if
so plz forgive me this late-friday-ramble.

Is the deadline midnight on Sunday?

Re: [CODE4LIB] Logo next step

2008-11-21 Thread Cloutman, David
Roy,

I'd be happy to look at your drafts and offer feedback. I've worked a
lot with designers in the past, so I can help steer the document so that
it is helpful to the designer, and insure the process goes smoothly. I
wish I could take on a more active role, but I'm already involved in a
pro-bono Web site project that is taking up my volunteer time.

Subject: [CODE4LIB] Logo next step

Having brought up the question of a Code4Lib logo, and then forcing not
one,
but two, votes on you all I realize I have been remiss in not taking the
next step. If I didn't know any better, I would think that I've been
distracted recently by, uh, some sort of public relations disaster or
something. But anyway, I digress.

A month ago, at the end of the second vote[1] that determined we would
work
with Stephanie Brinley, I called for volunteers to work on an ad hoc
task
force to shepherd the process. As Leslie Johnston said at one point "The
key
to working with a professional is in identifying the design "program" <
what
the organization's "story" is, who its community is, and who you want to
get
your message to with the branding, as well as identifying what uses the
logo
will be used for < print, promotional items (t-shirts, hats, temporary
tatoos, whatever), online < which has on effect on the deliverables,
e.g.
file sizes and formats." David Cloutman also talked about developing a
"requirements document" that could be vetted on the list.

I suggest drafting something of no more than one page in length to
provide
such background and guidance. I and whomever wishes to join me will
draft
it, post it to the list for wider feedback, revise it based on that
feedback, and contact Stephanie. I will begin this now, so if you want
to be
involved please let me know. Thanks,
Roy

[CODE4LIB] presentation proposals update

2008-11-21 Thread Birkin James Diana
We have a bunch of *terrific* presentation proposals, so the tone of
this reminder is now one of invitation rather than pleading. :)

We're accepting proposals through this Sunday, November 23. If you're
even vaguely interested in submitting, I suggest you at least go to
the submission page sooner rather than later and log-in to make sure
your code4lib username and password are working as expected.

For the first-timers among you, keep in mind these points:
- The talks are only 20-minutes including questions.
- We're a friendly bunch.
- Though many presenters are deeply knowledgeable about their chosen
subject, this community very highly values sharing experimentation, so
you should feel absolutely free to submit a presentation proposal on,
say, 'playing with djatoka'.
- This is shaping up to be a great conference (the preconferences are
great, too; I'll say more about those in another post) -- and it has
filled up *fast* in the past, so don't underestimate the benefit of
being guaranteed a spot as a presenter.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Logo next step

2008-11-21 Thread Emily Molanphy
Dear Roy,

I would be interested in participating because I have been working on a logo
for our library with a designer, and have logos on the brain right now. I
may try to publish something about our process and would also like to see
the development of another logo for comparison purposes.

By the way, I'm the same Emily who commented on your Kindle post (I think I
was rather harsh in retrospect)--thank you for your rebuttal, which was
reasonable. I'd love to talk about this more some time, since I used to work
in book publishing before library school and had a front-row seat to watch
the development of some of the ebook projects going on at the time. (I
started out as the assistant to Phyllis Grann, famous CEO of Penguin.) I
think a lot of the early missteps had to do with paranoia over what had
happened to the music industry, with which book publishing is connected on a
personal if not official level. If you're going to be at Code4Lib in
Providence this year, I will track you down to talk!

2008-11-21 Thread Jay Luker
Hi,

Now that we have the When and Where for our 1st gathering, it's time to
think about the What. Apart from an obligatory, initial 10 minutes of
round-the-table introductions, how should we make use of the day?

If you have ideas or would like to commit to presenting on something, either
in lightning talk form or longer even, make it known on the wiki page:
http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/NEC4L.
