Re: [CODE4LIB] Windows 8

2013-07-25 Thread William Helman
Like Cynthia that decision is made at the campus IT level. Over the past
year I've migrated nearly all lab and staff PCs from XP to Win7 (keep an
eye out for a related question I'll be posting later today on that topic).
Campus IT is toying with some Win8 images, but haven't been happy with any
of them. Given that they're still finishing up their XP migrations, though,
I seriously doubt we'll be moving to 8 anytime soon, if ever.

I will join the refrain of wait for 8.1 unless you are using a touch

seasoned users) have difficulty unthinking how to Start me up without

[CODE4LIB] locking app for iPads

2013-07-25 Thread Cheryl Kohen
Dear Fellow Techs,

We're looking to create a circulation policy for iPads (gen 4) in the
Learning Commons, and were wondering about an app that will lock the device
after a specific amount of time (3-4 hours). The idea is if a student
does, in fact, steal the device, they will be locked out of actually
utilizing it. Has anyone heard of something like this?

Many thanks!
Cheryl

I don't know of a time-sensitive one, but Apple's Find My iPad (or iPhone),
has an option to remotely lock a device:

https://www.apple.com/icloud/features/find-my-iphone.html

I suspect it needs a network connection to send the signal to lock.

I don't know if it'll stop anyone who can jailbreak the device, but it would
hopefully stop the person attempting to 'borrow' it long-term. (and you can
track where it is, if it's a device with GPS)

2013-07-25 Thread Ingersoll, Ryan
We installed Find my iPad through iCloud. We have not needed to use it because
we have a strong circulation
policyhttp://blog.spu.edu/librarytechdesk/files/2012/09/iPad-Checkout-Policy-2012.pdf
that will fine the students if they are late or do not return it. The fine
goes directly to their student account (won't be able to register for classes,
for example).
