[CODE4LIB] Job: Web Developer (Mapping) at Pennsylvania State University

2015-03-12 Thread jobs
Web Developer (Mapping)
Pennsylvania State University
University Park

We require a Web developer with experience working with
mappingtechnologies to contribute to the development of
software for acartographic project

We are looking to replace an existing implementation of WordPress
andMapbox (see
https://digitallab.psu.edu/projects/mappingbelami) with aplatform-independent
solution, built on open Web technologies. The purposeof
this project is to allow students to add places of narrative
importanceto a map, providing textual and visual content
for reference. Developersshould use the aforementioned link
as an example of project content andbasic functionality.

We require someone with expertise in the Web technologies necessary
tobuild this platform. Pre existing open source libraries
may be used, butall code must be appropriately commented,
and thorough documentationdetailing all modular development
and integration must be provided.

From an operational perspective, the finished development should work
asfollows:

  * Students will place data into a structured format
  * This data will appear on the front-end map
  * As is currently the case, the map must be interactive, allowing for users
to click between these points, displaying the relevant data
We appreciate that there are multiple ways to approach this functionality, and
welcome proposals from developers as to how they would build this
tool. The structure should be reusable, so that the
underlying data can bechanged in the future, and
implemented across a number of similar projects.

This is a short-term, grant-funded opportunity.

Any queries should be address to Dawn Childress (d...@psu.edu) and
JamesO'Sullivan (josulli...@psu.edu).

The Indiana Online Users Group (IOLUG) Program Committee invites you to

Wesleyan in Indianapolis, IN.

Please submit your proposal using the online form by Friday, April 24th,

Resource Sharing is nothing new to libraries and librarians – after all,
libraries are the original collectors and lenders of information. But
today, sharing is more than just lending out books, or even other items
(like bike locks). Libraries are taking sharing to the next level, and we
are making sure others know about it. The IOLUG Spring Conference Committee
invites proposals that explore the many aspects of sharing in libraries.
Topic ideas include, but are not limited to:

•Consortial Purchasing

•Open Source software – software with publicly-available source-code
for study, change, and distribution

•Open Access – online, free scholarly literature that is exempt from
most copyright restrictions

•Inter-Library Loan

•Collection Development implications of resource sharing

•Data Sharing – the practice of sharing and archiving scholarly or
scientific data used in research

•Sharing Spaces

•Open Licensing – generally, licensing a work which allows for the
access, alteration, and re-distribution of it with few if any restrictions

after a quick email search I found something surprising; I had received
emails from this company at my /work/ email address. I never noticed the

discovered that at some point I had supposedly registered for a free

expecting it while registering for an academic conference. I'm not
blaming anyone nor am I angry with anyone on this list. I only send this

1. To see if anyone else has had a similar experience.
2. To warn other people from code4lib to check their bank statements.
3. To plead with the community to stop using ACTIVE Network, LLC and
anything affiliated with them for registration.

Let me be frank for a moment. ACTIVE Network, LLC engages in highly
unethical business practices. I did not intend to enroll in any annual
subscriptions when I registered for code4lib and I never would have
agreed to anything of the sort had I noticed what was happening.
Additionally, the subscription isn't at all relevant to code4lib. I'm
not even sure what value is being provided by the subscription. I think
it has something to do with coupons for outdoor exercise equipment but
I'm not even sure. Also, these guys are bad. They lost class action
lawsuits in Iowa and Vermont. In fact, this whole thing is just bad all
around. Since noticing the fraudulent charges this morning, I've already
disputed them with my bank and filed a formal complaint against ACTIVE
Network, LLC with the better business bureau. Apparently I'm not the

  Subject: [CODE4LIB] Drupal code club

With the overwhelming response to the recent post about a Python/PyMARC
code club on the Code4Lib list, I was wondering if anyone would be
interested in something similar for Drupal. As a Drupal user and a wannabe
module developer, I'm finding that reading other people's modules
(especially core) is one of the best ways to really understand what's going
on under the hood. Much like Python, Drupal has its own unique idioms and
ways of looking at problems, and reading modules helps one get into this
  mindset.

If anyone else is interested in this, please let me know either through a
reply to this thread or a direct email (bjbr...@fsu.edu). If there is
sufficient interest, I'll try to set up something similar to what the
  Python/PyMARC crowd is doing.

[CODE4LIB] 2015 Access Conference: Call for Proposals

2015-03-12 Thread Kim Pham
AccessYYZ: Call for Proposals
September 8-11, 2015

Access is Canada’s premier library technology conference, bringing together
librarians, technicians, developers, and programmers to discuss cutting-edge
library technologies. This is the 22nd year of Access and we’re thrilled to
bring the conference to Toronto, Ontario! AccessYYZ will be held at the
beautiful Bram and Bluma Appel Salon at the Toronto Reference Library in
September 2015.

This year, we’re looking for the most innovative and creative ways that tech
has been or could be implemented in your library - whether it’s big, small, or
completely theoretical! Are you using a Raspberry Pi to build custom hardware?
How might linked open data changing your day-to-day library services in the
future? Have you been working to foster a renewed culture of tech exploration
among your staff? We want to hear all about it! We would especially love to see
proposals from public libraries, special libraries, and other places outside
the ivory tower that are using library technologies in new and innovative ways.

In time-honoured Access tradition, we want to take advantage of the flexibility
of single track conference planning by letting you propose your preferred
session length and format. Let us know if you want to do a traditional talk, a
poster presentation, a demo, Pecha Kucha, a lightning talk, a panel of experts
or something completely different. Be creative!

In your proposal, let us know...

 *
Your name, position, and affiliation
 *
If you’ve presented at Access before
 *
The format of your proposed session
 *
In 1-2 paragraphs, the content of your proposed session
 *

And, if your presentation is not accepted in its proposed format, if you would
be willing to present in an alternate format (e.g. poster presentation,
lightning talk, panel)

Please submit proposals to
accesslib...@gmail.commailto:accesslib...@gmail.commailto:accesslib...@gmail.com
by March 20, 2015. You can check out the 2014 conference program

Re: [CODE4LIB] code4lib registration repercussions?

2015-03-12 Thread Becky Yoose
A follow-up - the charge name that is listed on my statement for 2013
registration is WithdrawalACT*Council on Library which is different than
what you have listed in your statement. :-(

Thanks,
Becky

 Hello Brad,

I'm sorry to hear about the suspicious charges! Per your request, I
checked the history of the the account I used to pay for 2013 and did not
find a reoccurring charge like the one you described. I wonder what
 happened with your account...

 Thanks,
 Becky

 Hi everybody,

I hope this is the right place to inquire about this. I have some
information about a possible problem with the company handling registration
for code4lib. I recently noticed a suspicious charge on my credit card for
the amount of $64.95. The charge showed up as ACT*ACTIVE-NETWORK. After
some investigation I found out this was from a company called ACTIVE
Network, LLC. Apparently this company handles registration for events.

To my dismay I found out that I had been charged for this annually since
 2013. I'm very embarrassed that 1. I didn't notice this during the
registration process and 2. I didn't catch the charges earlier. Anyhow,
after a quick email search I found something surprising; I had received
emails from this company at my /work/ email address. I never noticed the
emails because they looked like junkmail, however, upon reviewing them I
discovered that at some point I had supposedly registered for a free trial
that ended after a month, at which point I was automatically enrolled into
an annual subscription. Needless to say, I//did /not/ ever sign up for any
trial or subscription, at least not to my knowledge.

Since I have only used my personal credit card for work purposes 3 times,
it was easy to tie this to code4lib 2013. I looked at my receipt for
code4lib 2013 and saw that something called RegOnline (owned by Lanyon
Solutions Inc) was used to process my event registration. Though I'm not
sure this is the same company, RegOnline, Lanyon Solutions Inc, and ACTIVE
Network, LLC all share the same physical address. I suspect these three
companies are one and the same and will refer to them as ACTIVE Network,
LLC for the rest of this email.

I did a little investigating and found out that ACTIVE Network, LLC. uses
unscrupulous business practices to trick people into singing up for their
annual subscription. The crux of this is an automatic opt-in they employ
while processing enrollments for third parties. Though I'm very embarrassed
I didn't catch this, in my own defense I wasn't expecting it while
registering for an academic conference. I'm not blaming anyone nor am I
angry with anyone on this list. I only send this email to inquire and
 inform:

I did not intend to enroll in any annual
subscriptions when I registered for code4lib and I never would have agreed
to anything of the sort had I noticed what was happening. Additionally, the
subscription isn't at all relevant to code4lib. I'm not even sure what
value is being provided by the subscription. I think it has something to do
with coupons for outdoor exercise equipment but I'm not even sure. Also,
these guys are bad. They lost class action lawsuits in Iowa and Vermont. In
fact, this whole thing is just bad all around. Since noticing the
fraudulent charges this morning, I've already disputed them with my bank
and filed a formal complaint against ACTIVE Network, LLC with the better
business bureau. Apparently I'm not the only one:

I apologize if I've made an error in my investigation or if I've done
something inappropriate by emailing this list. I can't imagine that anyone
would have intended anything like this but I thought you should all be
 aware.
