Re: The University of São Paulo's intent to join Openmoko development

2009-07-13 Thread Brenda Wang

Jon 'maddog' Hall wrote:

 Dear Openmoko Community,

In light of the refocusing of Sean's company on consumer items, there
has been a perceived vacuum created in the Openmoko community's efforts
to create next-generation open cellular smart phones.

I happened to be working with Dr. Marcelo Zuffo, a full professor and
the head of the Laboratory for Integrated Systems at the University of
São Paulo, Brazil, on an unrelated project. I asked Dr. Zuffo if the
university would be willing to join the Openmoko community and to
provide critical resources to the task at hand.

I subsequently have met with Dr. Zuffo several times on this matter,
have seen his facilities (which include a very modern and
state-of-the-art SMT line) and have discussed the goals of the community
to design and prototype a completely open design for a cellular phone.
Dr. Zuffo and the university understand your issues, understand free and
open source software and hardware and are willing to assist the
 community with this project.

I might add that the university can bring several new capabilities to
 the community:

First of all, Dr. Zuffo has discussed the Openmoko project with the
Minister of Telecommunications of Brazil, and the Minister is very
enthusiastic about the concept. Having the support of the government of
the twelfth largest economy behind the project might really help us with
 various negotiations with vendors.

Secondly the University has been working on several aspects of
telecommunications for a long time, and therefore has expertise in
telephonic security and codecs (among other things) that could be of use
 to the Openmoko community.

Third, the university has the ability and expertise to design new
integrated circuits. Recently they designed a a range of analog-digital
chips. Therefore the possibility of developing, manufacturing and
freely licensing new chips to help reduce the cost of the phone is
 possible.

Forth, while the facilities I mentioned are capable of producing up to
10,000 units at the rate of one circuit board every 30 seconds, the
purpose of the facilities is research, developing and support projects
that can lead innovation, the lab's charter does not allow them to
manufacture more units then the 10,000 because that would be commercial
production. Therefore the university has a goal of freely licensing
the design to companies for manufacture.

Fifth, the university would be happy to host the mailing lists and
forums of the Openmoko project. If some of the software projects need
hosting and can not find hosting services other places, the university
will consider acting as a primary hosting facility for these projects.

Sixth, personally I would like to see this concept extended, of inviting
more universities and their facilities to help with this project
world-wide. I hope that the leadership of the University of Sao Paulo
will help create the structure and inspiration for this to happen.

 Brenda Wang wrote:

It's really great to hear this.
In Taiwan, Tsing Hua university also has a OPENlab.

Finally, the university has a non-profit legal entity, LSITEC, which can
easily do the type of paperwork that Sean's company did (NDAs,
certification) so the community can leverage off that.

I know that there will be a lot of questions and considerations to take
before the community is comfortable with this relationship. Dr. Zuffo
has asked that I help coordinate the joining together of the university
with the community, and in the interest of seeing Openmoko continue to
do the fine work started by Sean and all of you, I will be glad to help
in this capacity. I am monitoring the community mailing list, and
people are also welcome to email me directly (mad...@li.org) with
questions that you do not (for any reason) wish to post to the list.

A copy of Dr. Zuffo's letter of intent is below. I have the original
PDF if anyone would like to see it, but it was too big to make it
through the community's standards on mailing lists unmoderated, and I
thought you might like to see this as soon as possible.

 Warmest regards,

Dear Mr. Hall, according our conversation LSI-USP the Laboratory for
Integrated Systems at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, is interested
in hosting the OpenMoko Community to design innovative cell phone
 designs.

We would like to offer the community the following facilities:
‐ State-of-art facilities for SMT (Surface Mounting Technology)
 prototyping of complex electronics boards;

Hi!

OM isn't working on the software for our phones any more and it looks
like that also the releasing of Community Updates
(http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Community_Updates) has stopped
(actually the 'news' link has been removed from wiki main navigation).

So we have to do it. I think it's vital for the community to have some
kind of newsletter that allows one to have a quick look at what's
happened, if you don't follow the mailing lists and IRC daily.

I started the draft page here for the next updates:
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Talk:Community_Updates/June_25%2C_2009
Please add there everything that's happened since May 22nd.

Adding news

   1. Don't trust that someone else will add it, add it yourself and
make it clean
   2. Add links to blog posts, applications, mailing list posts that
you think are worth to announce to the whole community

Releasing

   1. If it's The Release Date and you notice the news has not been
released, DO IT! Don't trust that someone else will do it for you.
   2. When you release, move the content of Talk: page to the actual
wikipage.
   3. Add a link to the released update page to
http://wiki.openmoko.org/index.php?title=Community_Updates
   4. Prepare the draft page for the next community news: captions,
dates etc.. Releasing news on Thursdays every two weeks sound's good
to me.
   5. Send a post to the community mailing list with the link to the
released news and the draft of the next news.

The rules are also at
http://wiki.openmoko.org/index.php?title=Community_Updates#Rules_for_community_updates

r (hey, I just started this again, don't trust me to push it any
further, do it yourself :D

Re: First release of Enscribi - handwriting recognition input method

2009-02-15 Thread Brenda Wang
Does it work at OM 2008.9 ?
I install it on Om 2008. 9 , but I don't know how to initiate it .

Olof Sjobergh ??:
 Hi,

This is to announce the first release of Enscribi, a new handwriting
recognition input method I've been working on. The main focus, and the
only thing supported for now, is writing Japanese and Chinese
characters (and numbers, but numbers only won't get you far...). It
uses the excellent Zinnia recognition engine for the actual
recognition. If anyone is interested, please take a look.

 There's a project page at http://olofsj.github.com/enscribi/ with
 screenshots and some more information.

There are packages on opkg.org for trying it out (only tested on FSO
milestone 5). The following packages are available:
 http://www.opkg.org/package_133.htmlEnscribi
 http://www.opkg.org/package_130.htmlZinnia (required dependency)
 http://www.opkg.org/package_131.htmlZinnia-tomoe-ja (for Japanese support)
 http://www.opkg.org/package_132.htmlZinnia-tomoe-zh (for Chinese support)

Also, you need a Japanese or Chinese font to see the characters
(should be available in the usual repos).

The code is hosted on Github at http://github.com/olofsj/enscribi/tree/master

 Best regards,

 Olof Sjöbergh

Except vote , you can also put the new item on this table.

William Kenworthy ??:
How does one vote? - even created an account but nothing shows up to
 enable input.

The list seems odd considering the number and type of responses Ive
seen? - nothing about being able to reliably receive SMS messages,
nothing about being able to make/receive phone calls which were
mentioned a number of times and seems to be affecting a very large
number of OM users to at least some degree.

Flicking only toggles the different views of the keyboard, none of which

letters too. I nominate the letter E.)

I reinstalled matchbox, and I see it trying to come on, but it immediately

If someone could please explain how to disable the qtopia keyboard, I (and

Thanks for the sugestion.
I will think about it seriously.

Brenda
Aaron Sowry ??:
I think you're doing a great job. A couple of suggestions:

 1) Aesthetics: Could anything be done to make the wiki more visually
attractive? Orange and white are the old 1973 colours - shouldn't we
have a slick green and black theme or something now that the
 Freerunner has been released?

 2) News feed: A prominent news feed makes the site look both
up-to-date and dynamic (particularly to web crawlers :). Perhaps we
could have an automated feed updated once a week from relevant
RSS/ATOM sources within the open-source and mobile industries? This
would also be a great place for the core team to post announcements
that people may miss in the mailing lists.

I realise these things probably aren't primary considerations given
the purpose of the wiki, but I know once the framework is there and
the site becomes attractive and easy to navigate then the content will
 quickly follow.

It definitely can use more polish:

 - The layout has been tested with Firefox and Konqueror only.

 - Obviously feeding the news automatically from an RSS flow would be better,
as Aaron said. Pending that there will be a need to feed the newsbox
 manually.

 - I support Brian's remark that DOCS should be BUGS

 - I add that in the same linkbar, HOME and WIKI lead to the same page.

In doubt, don't hesitate to use the Discussion tab of this page. I

 3. Community.

No system will be perfect and no organization of data will suit everyone
 since we all carve
The world up in different ways.

That said, I would not object to the 5 categories you suggest.

The biggest issue is the massive amount of knowledge the community generates
 about the devices.

This knowledge needs to be structured and disseminated.

 Easier said than done.

This is a compromise between too big and including people which use
too high resolution. If you have this big resolution, and you don't
have any problems on other web pages, you don't have a problem here,
right?

Adjusting the font size is easy (ctrl-+), except if you use IE (you
have to go on View - Text size - Largest if you use IE).

Some people use special glasses when they use the computer... you
cannot expect this wiki to use 24pt text. People like to see more than
just a few words at a time. I want to see the whole page without
horizontal scrolling and the whole index table without vertical
scrolling. I think I am not the only one.

I do not have larger resolution that 800x600 here (very little
screen), and really hate too large fonts.

That is just my opinion.

Brenda: please use [[wiki page name]] instead of [http://URL-to/wiki/page
page] in content.

[[wiki page name]] is rendered in other way then [URL name] - second ones
are marked as external links.

To everybody! Brenda -Full time editor on board

2008-02-19 Thread Brenda Wang

Hello everybody:

I am Brenda Wang. I'm OpenMoko's full time editor. I was on board on 18,
Feb.
My job here is editing OpenMoko wiki, and make wiki more organized.
Firstly, I will create a page as an Index. The page's name is
OPENMOKO WIKI Offical Index Page. It is like a book's Index; then you
can find things easily. Please let me know if you have any suggestions
or questions.

Regard.

Brenda Wang
