Re: 2008.08 - First Impressions

2008-08-09 Thread ted braak
Thanks for your impression. Really helpful in deciding NOT to install this. I
am pretty amazed you claim that the OM team have made a big leap forward and
also saying this version still has issues with the basic functionality of the
phone.. Power management, calling, sms and intuitive entering of text without
stylus should be the main focus. The rest can follow later (even GPS).

Of course this is not a fact, it is just my opinion.

Re: 2008 WTF??

2008-08-09 Thread ted braak
2008 was launched like this:

William Lai wrote:

" Here is what you can expect:

- A stable and working phone stack realized by using Qtopia.

- A new and flexible window manager [Illume] that broadens our support
for the different graphic libraries, including GTK+ and more.

- The whole system software has been reworked which leads to a very fast
and reliable suspend & resume, LED control and power management. "

It is not stable, software is not fast, and power management is not reliable.
Announcing something this way leads to disappointments.
I have real doubts about the some Quality Assurance aspects of this team.
Also I don't see real dedication and vision to get rid of bugs and produce
something stable and usable. It looks like there is more effort in bringing us
bling.
I think bling is something that can be created by the community itself.

Non dev wants to buy Neo1973

2007-06-30 Thread ted braak
Hi all,

I'm really interested in buying a Neo1973. Unfortunately I'm not a developer so
will not be able to add a lot more value to this nice device.
I have seen it is possible for a non dev to buy the phone, but I have 2
questions before taking the plunge.

1. Could hardware be changed in the consumer version? Is the dev version also
intended to 'tweak' the hardware?
2. Would I be "stealing" a phone away from a developer and by doing that slow
down development?

Really looking forward to this phone, hopefully I will be able to use an open
phone soon. Being one of the first to own one and see development progress
would be great.

TB

It's already on the wishlist. I like the idea a lot.

Thanks for your answers.
Don't know what I will do. Could be missing great hardware improvements if I
buy too early, but I would be missing a couple of months of excitement as well.
Tough choice :)
Will wait for the official announcements, and decide after that.

Nederlanders! Openmoko needs more attention

2007-07-08 Thread ted braak
There is a forumthread started on the tweakers forum
http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_messages/1231336

Very popular site for ICT news. Maybe a good idea to add some comments to get
some more attention.
I've searched on this site and there were no threads started, so according to
the tweakers forum the openmoko project doesn't exist. It's about time that
changed :)
