a question

2007-12-12 Thread Bert Van de Poel

Hi openmoko community,

I'm a webdeveloper with experience using HTML, CSS, Javascript, DHTML,
PHP, SQL, etc.

Could I be for any use for the openmoko project ?

Greetings Bert

PS. I hope this is the appropriate place to ask this.

i'm sure you can - there are many community-driven projects underway
to develop apps for OM. maybe something here you are interested in
working on?

greetings and a question

2007-07-26 Thread tyler laing
Hello all, I am new to the OpenMoko world, but I would love to help out. My
primary experience is with Python, but I have soem experience with C, and
almost none with C++.My first question, but not last ;-), is, is it possible to
have the Neo1973 connect via Peer-to-peer wireless networking to another
computer/phone? Is there a drive yet for it?

What I meant is, in the consumer version, will this be possible? And I meant
"driver", not drive. I'm sorry I wasn't clear enough in my first question.

First of all, the first respondent was in fact incorrect. Even the
development version has Bluetooth, which _can_ be used for wireless
networking between Neos and/or computers. The range is smaller than with
WiFi, as is the bandwidth, but at least the latter is likely to be quite
enough for most uses.

The mass-market Neo's AR6K will add ad-hoc wifi capabilities, adding
bandwidth and range at the cost of more power.

Both will of course require connection setup control software, but that
shouldn't be too much of a burden.

Got my phone! + A comment and a Question

2007-07-27 Thread Ken Young
I got my phone, and I'm a happy guy!

I learned one thing that might save someone else some time. I
initially tried to do the dfu-util downloads of the kernel and
rootfs from linux running via VMWare on a Windoze host. Although
dfu-util definately could talk to the neo, it could not successfully
download the images. Once I switched to a native linux box (running
exactly the same OS version) I had no problems.

Something that worries me is that at the end of the "Getting Started
with your Neo1973" page in the wiki, it suggests backing up the
original flash contents, because "... there are parts in the root
filesystem that can't be distributed over internet so they are only found
in the shipped ROM (see the GPS driver)." Now these first neos have been
shipped with no rootfs at all (see wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/SH1). So
we *have* to overwrite the rootfs before the device will boot. What
does that mean vis a vis the parts of the filesystem which can't be
distributed over the internet? How do we get those parts?

the information about 'there are parts in the root filesystem...' were
wrong. I didn't check the revision history who put them there, but
those are not applicable to SH1.

so since there is no rootfs, no need to backup the garbage (or rather:
tons of zeroes) in there.

Experiences from a new user/owner and a question.

2008-08-15 Thread Dimitri Michaux
Hey,

I received my OpenMoko freerunner this monday and I played around with
it the whole week and this is my experience with it.

I didn't like the software that came with it (I guess that is 2007.2),
I just didn't like the look and feel of it. So I installed ASU on it
and that felt better, but it isn't quit stable. So I installed 2008.8
from the build host, these feel more stable, but can't seem to find
the installer on it ??? So, now I'm running Qtopia on it which just
feels much more mature and stable and makes the phone usable as a
'phone'.

Now, what is the best thing to do? I guess I would like to keep using
qtopia as long as 2008.8 isn't ready for every day use. But now my
question is: is which version should I install on the sd card? The
official 2008.8 release and try to update that or install the version
from the build host? Also updates don't seem to work (I have usb
networking and added a nameserver to resolve.conf).

And now I just want to say that is a really nice a good looking solid
feeling machine and I like playing with it :-)

Regards,
Dimitri

w/o useful informations _what_ fails and _what_ does not work and how
those failures manifest themselves, probably nobody can help you there.
