Mandrake's webpage has directions that need to be followed when performing the 2.2.16 kernel upgrade; however, before installing those rpms, load the loopback module ('insmod loop.o'). Else the file itself will be removed using the '-U' option or you will not be able to mkinitrd. -matthew Let me see if I understand this. The reason that I can't do a mkinitrd after I upgrade to 2.2.16 is that loop.o is not already in memory before the upgrade? If I insmod this and then do a "rpm -U" on the new kernel package, everything will be ok? Will loop.o still exist (and be usable) in my modules in the 2.2.16? Stratos

[Cooker] mdk 7.1 problems
Hello dear list, I installed Mandrake 7.1 (final), and I must say i'm very impressed by the overall quality of this new flavor of Mandrake Linux. But i nonetheless faced some problems : - I choose expert mode, so maybe i sould not complain about what follows :-) When choosing individual packages, i removed open_ldap. As i used automatic package dependencies, i didn't remark that the installer also removed many other packages, as for example kdebase ! Maybe i'm completely wrong, but i think that open_ldap is not a prerequisite for kdebase and the other packages removed (cannot remember which). - Another package dependency problem : when using MandrakeUpdate, i could not take the upgrade for xemacs, because of a conflict with emacs-el. As the conflict was not here during the installation, why introduce it later ? - Finally, when upgrading to kernel 2.2.16, i got many problems : the package reiserfs-utils.2.2.16_3.5.19.rpm looked older to rpm than the current reiserfs-utils.3.5.19.rpm. I perfectly understand the error here, but those inconsistencies are nonetheless annoying. I finally installed the package with --force by hand. But when i rebooted, my system refused to run again, because of the reiserfs module not found in /lib/reiserfs (i'm not sure, writing from memory). As i could not resolve this by hand, i only managed to put back the kernel 2.2.15 with the cdrom in rescue mode. I must add that all my partitions use reiserfs, except boot. I also remarked that the initrd was still the one for 2.2.15. When i removed the line in the /boot/grub/menu.lst, all the errors concerning reiserfs disappeared, but the system still refused to boot. As initrd.2.2.15.img is not owned by any package, i don't know how to get a correct initrd for 2.2.16. Any idea ? Pascal Grosse

RE: [Cooker] Can I disable unneeded services?
What services might I disable (with drakxservices) to free up some resources (RAM). I figure there are at least some services running that I don't need that I can kill. What do you need running? That depends on what your system is doing all day (and night). Take some time and go through the list below, it may help you out a little. I threw this together in a matter of minutes, so it's not very good or complete, but it should help some. Here's a really long (not complete) list of services: amd = Automount daemon, automatically mounts filesytems. anacron = Another cron daemon, runs programs at scheduled times (may not really be needed). apmd = Advanced power management, monitors laptop batteries and turns on/off hardware not in use. arpwatch = Watches arp traffic on your network (most likely not needed). atd = A cron-type thing runs programs at a set time (may not really be needed). autofs = Another automatic filesystem mounter. bootparamd = Server for bootp clients (most likely not needed). crond = Cron daemon, runs programs at set times (used by logrotate and other system-level stuff, may want to keep this one.) dhcpd = DHCP server daemon, serves IP addresses to other systems on the network (most likely not needed). gated = Advanced routing daemon (most likely not needed). gpm = Console mouse driver (only needed if you want to use your mouse for copy/paste in the console). httpd = Web server (only needed if you're serving web pages). inet = Inet daemon, handles FTP, telnet, POP mail, and other misc services (you can probably disable some of the services in inet, but by disabling inet, remember that you are disabling FTP and telnet). innd = Internet news server (most likely not needed). isdn4linux = ISDN services (only needed if you have an ISDN Internet connection). keytable = Keyboard mappings. kudzu = Detects and configures new hardware (you can turn this off until you add new hardware). ldap = Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, provides Enterprise-level directory services (most likely not needed). linuxconf = Linux configuration tool, accessible from the web (useful for remote administration, but if you're always in front of the machine, it's not really needed). lpd = Printer daemon (only needed if you have a printer or access a remote printer). mars-nwe = Netware server emulator (only needed if you need to provide Netware-like file/print sharing, most likely not needed). mcserv = Midnight commander server, for using mc from a remote machine (most likely not needed). named = Name server, provides IP address resolution for a domain (only needed if you have a domain and you need to provide DNS service for it, most likely not needed). netfs = Network filesystem mounter (only needed if you do a lot of network filesystem mounting). network = Controls the basic networking components such as your ethernet card. nfs = NFS server, shares filesystem to remote computers (only needed if you will be sharing files among Linux/UNIX machines). nfslock = File locking for NFS (only needed if you use NFS). nscd = Name Switch Cache Daemon, caches user and group lookups among servers (only needed if you use NIS/YP, most likely not needed). numlock = Controls the numlock key (turns it on during bootup). pcmcia = PCMCIA card services for laptops (only needed if you have a laptop). portmap = Portmapper (only needed if you use NIS/YP or NFS). postfix = Mail server (choose between this and sendmail). postgresql = SQL database server (only needed if you need a database). routed = Routing daemon (most likely not needed). rstatd = The 4 big "r" services (only needed if rusersd you're running a full-service shell rwalldserver, most likely not needed) rwhod sendmail = Mail server (choose between this and postfix). smb = Samba, Windows and Linux file/print sharing (only needed if you'll be sharing files between Windows and Linux systems). snmpd = SNMP daemon, used to manage systems over a network (most likely not needed). squid = Squid proxy server, caches Web traffic (most likely not needed). sshd = Secure shell daemon, secure telnet (you may want to enable this to access your machine remotely, it's much more secure than telnet, especially important if you disabled inet). syslog = System log daemon (you should keep this running). usb = USB support services (only needed if you have USB devices on your computer). webmin = Web

[Cooker] LinuxThreads Debugging
Cooker folks, I just joined this list. Forgive me if this issue has already been raised and addressed! I debug multithreaded servers on Linux, and there are not-so-well-known patches needed to both GDB 4.18 and Glibc 2.1.3 which are required in order for GDB to be effectively "thread-aware". Mandrake 7.1 does not have these patches, it seems! After some fooling around, I discovered that (conveniently) the Redhat 6.2 Glibc and GDB packages have full thread support, and they install cleanly as RPM upgrades for Mandrake 7.1. Regards, Matt

Hi! Where can I get the template .spec file for building RPMs for Mandrake? Trying to access ftp://ftp.mandrakesoft.com/pub/chmou/skelet.spec just returns, that there are too many anon logins. Could someone please send me the file, and could the spec file please be made available via http and the links in the howto and on the mandrake page be updated? Thanks! [Cooker] Postfix NOT working by default
The default installation of postfix that comes with Mandrake does not work by default. If I try to use pine to send a message it freezes up pine fot more than a minute. It get's stuck at 0% of sending the message. It does this with other mail readers too like mutt. Getting the latest postfix source and recompiling seems to fix this problem. But I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem? I've experienced it in several different computers. At home, at workstations at school, and on a server at school I've had to recompile postfix to get it to work.Any ideas/solutions? It would be really nice for it to work out of the box.. [Cooker] Ethernet configuration
Hi! I installed today Mandrake 7.0 on a box with an old ISA Ethernet card. Unfortunately I haven't succeeded in making it work (I bought a PCI card a few hours later). But still I have a question : what is the Ethernet configuration tool under Mandrake?? As far as I've seen, there are "etherconfig", "lothar" and "kudzu". I may have misunderstood the role of each one, anyway it's unclear, to say the least, in Mandrake 7.0. =( Bye, Gregus PS : Direct your comments to my email address please, I'm not subscribed to Cooker list at the moment.
