Regarding this machine with s3 card. I replaced s3 card with card Cirrus Logic one.
Now I am using this machine for a server.

When I connected on it with LTSP client and started using KDE it was freezing again,
but not (!) when I was using nxclient (www.nomachine.org).

When I use kernel2.4-marcelo it doesn't freeze anymore.

In MDK9.2 RC2 (also RC1) KDE is freezing on my machine at random times.
Sometimes when I start KDE, sometimes when I navigate K-menu and sometimes
when I try to install new software.

Screen freezes, mouse doesn't move, keyboard doesn't respond (e.g. I can't
turn on num/caps/scroll lock). Note: leds for num/caps/scroll lock are NOT
blinking.

I can't restart X with: CTRL+ALT+Backspace
I can't log in to this machine with ssh.
I can't reboot with: Sys Rq (ALT + PrintScreen) + B

I have tried setting Bios to default settings and replacing nvidia driver with
nv driver but it still freezes in KDE.

It did not freeze in GNOME or IceWM I CAN recompile kernel without errors.

I have upgraded from MDK 9.0 to 9.2RC1 and then to 9.2RC2.

I use XFS filesystem.

I have AMD K6 350MHz downclocked to 266Mhz (because in MDK 9.0 I couldn't
recompile kernel on 350Mhz - signal 11). After that MDK 9.0 worked without a
problem.

In MDK 9.2 final KDE is freezing all the time and I have not found any workarounds.

I CAN reboot it with SysRq+B and I can also ping it from another machine. But I
cannot log on it with ssh.

I have set arts to use sound card in full duplex mode. Linux froze whenever

I have also noticed that apic isn't used. That is why I waited a few days before I
reported that it doesn't crash with noapic.

I will report back if it does crash.

I think installation CD should not boot unless user presses a key (e.g. like Windows
installation CD).

I often install packages from installation CDs and when I restart my computer I don't
remember to put them out.

[Cooker] [Bug 5639] [kernel] Computer freezes while using KDE

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-14-09 11:33 ---
I have ran a script from:
http://www.bitwizard.nl/sig11/
that compiles kernel and writes log files:

   #!/bin/sh
   #set -x
   t=1
   while [ -f log.$t ]
 do
 t=`expr $t + 1`
   done

   while true
 do
 make clean
 make -k bzImage log.cur 21
 mv log.cur log.$t
 t=`expr $t + 1`
   done

Logs from log.1 to log.7 are identical.

But log.8 is different:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] linux]$ diff log.1 log.8
1257c1257
 Setup is 4776 bytes.
---
 Setup is 4777 bytes.

On the other hand log.9 is the same as log.8.

Could this be hardware problem?

I use XFS filesystem.

I have AMD K6 350MHz downclocked to 266Mhz (because in MDK 9.0 I couldn't
recompile kernel on 350Mhz - signal 11). After that MDK 9.0 worked without a
problem.

[Cooker] [Bug 5639] [kernel] New: Computer freezes while using KDE

2003-09-13 Thread [gregor.pirnaver]
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5639

   Product: kernel
 Component: default
Summary: Computer freezes while using KDE
   Product: kernel
   Version: 2.4.22-8mdk
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: critical
  Priority: P1
 Component: default
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I use XFS filesystem.

recompile kernel on 350Mhz - signal 11). After that MDK 9.0 worked without a
problem.

frozen bubbles and Lbreakout2 are perfect with Mdk 9.0.
But with Mdk 9.1 RC1 and RC2 they are not.

When I ask full screen, the picture is narrower in the bottom.
Width at the top : 34cm
Width at the bottom : 32cm

Notes : With Ctrl Alt - the geometry remains correct.
Usual resolution 1280x1024 at 85Hz in each case.
(automatic setting with Mdk 901 : excellent!)

Tuxracer doesn't start after the upgrade.

I think data files have moved to a new dir /usr/share/games/tuxracer/. The problem
is there is a set data_dir that points to the old data dir in ~/.tuxracer/options.

Still on RC2...

OK, now I booted from a CD and (only) resized windows partition everything
works as expected.

So I guess there are some problems with lilo installation?

Could this be fixed permanently?

Q: OpenGL applications exit with the following error message:

Error: Could not open /dev/nvidiactl because the permissions
are too restrictive. Please see the FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
section of /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README for steps
to correct.

A: It is likely that a security module for the PAM system may be
changing the permissions on the NVIDIA device files. In most cases
this security system works, but it can get confused. To correct this
problem it is recommended that you disable this security feature.
   Different Linux distributions have different files to control this;
please consult with your distributor for the correct method of
disabling this security feature. As an example, if your system has
   the file
/etc/security/console.perms
then you should edit the file and remove the line that starts with
dri (we have also received reports that additional references to
dri in console.perms must be removed, but this has not been verified
by NVIDIA). If instead your system has the file
/etc/logindevperms
then you should edit the file and remove the line that lists
/dev/nvidiactl. The above steps will prevent the PAM security system
from modifying the permissions on the NVIDIA device files. Next,
you will need to reset the permissions on the device files back
to their original permissions and owner. You can do that with the
   following commands:
chmod 0666 /dev/nvidia* chown root /dev/nvidia*

Hello,
I read the first tutorial of QT included with the Mandrake 9.0 RC3, and tried to
make the hello world program.
The qt3 binaries are not in the path (maybe you could add some symlinks ?), and
even when I execute /usr/lib/qt3/bin/qmake (after creating the project file with
qmake -project), I got an error :
[EMAIL PROTECTED] qt]$ qmake -o Makefile qt.pro
QMAKESPEC has not been set, so configuration cannot be deduced.
Error processing project file: qt.pro

I solved that by setting $QMAKESPEC to /usr/lib/qt3/mkspecs/linux-g++/

Next, I must run make : the include directory is not known to qmake, leading to
an error :

g++ -c -pipe -Wall -W -O3 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -mcpu=pentiumpro
-march=i586 -ffast-math -fno-strength-reduce -DQT_NO_DEBUG
-I/usr/local/qt/include -I/usr/lib/qt3/mkspecs/linux-g++/ -o qt.o qt.C
qt.C:1:26: qapplication.h: No such file or directory
[...]

Even if I correct it by hand, I have other problems with libs (I didn't figure
out how to solve that one).

Could you please solve those issues ?
Thank you.

This problem was not present in mdk-9.1rc2.

Start up kde for the 1st time. Then start a konqueror window which displays the page:
file:/usr/share/doc/HTML/index.html.
Go down for the button for Search the web. The button for clicking shows no text !!
In fact there are several such buttons on https://qa.mandrakesoft.com itself where the
text
color matches the button color making the text totally invisible. Konqueror is
unusable, so
much so that reporting this bug itself was a big pain. For example, the commit
button under
this test window does not show the text commit.
