[Cooker] january 7 pcmcia image and etherlink III: almost....
a pcmcia network install is still not an option with the january 7 files, at least with a 3com etherlink III (3c589d). we get farther than we ever did before, though. steps for etherlink III: 1) make pcmcia diskette from the http://rpmfind.net/linux/MandrakeCooker/oxygen/ subdirectory 2) boot the diskette 3) "starting pcmcia services" appears; 2 beeps (both high tones) sound; link light on dongle goes on 4) http method 5) static ip address 6) web site: rpmfind.net directory: linux/MandrakeCooker/oxygen 7) it gets the base.img file very quickly (dsl line) 8) it says "Loading second stage ramdisk..." for maybe 30 seconds, then "Error loading ramdisk." alt-f3 shows: * welcome to the Mandrake install (first stage, version 7.0 built Jan 7 2000 22:42:16) * running: /bin/insmod /bin/insmod /modules/fat.o * running: /bin/insmod /bin/insmod /modules/vfat.o * welcome to the Mandrake install (first stage, version 7.0 built Jan 7 2000 22:42:16) * PCI bridge probe: * Cirrus PD6729 found, 2 sockets. a pcmcia network install is still not an option with the january 7 files and a linksys np10t pcmcia card, which is ne2000 compatible. if i'm reading the consoles output right (below), the ne2000 drivers aren't there yet. or maybe they're in a different directory. i also tried it with a network.img diskette instead of the pcmcia image, but of course got the same results after putting in the pcmcia "support diskette" (really boot diskette). the linksys web site advises that we use the old tulip driver, but neither old nor new tulip worked. the ne2000 drivers couldn't find the hardware either. steps with linksys/ne2000: 1) make pcmcia (and network) diskette from http://rpmfind.net/linux/MandrakeCooker/oxygen/ subdirectory. 2) boot the pcmcia diskette. 4) pcmcia services start, the computer beeps twice (one high, one low) and the dongle's link light goes on. 5) select http media 6) driver to try: i tried drivers "NE2000 and compatible", "NE2000 PCI", "Tulip", and a few others at random, all with autoprobe. i got the "I can't find the device anywhere on your system!" error. alt-f3 right after loading an ne2000 driver shows that it loads the pcmcia_core.o and i82365.o and ds.o modules as with the etherlink III, but after loading ds.o it reports: * in loadDeviceDriver, ks = 0, typName = ethernet * pci probing for ehternet devices * pci probe found 0 ethernet devices alt-f4 shows perhaps why it failed. all lines were preceded with a number in brokets, a time stamp, and an argv[0], like: 30 Jan 8 23:09:44 cardmgr[17]: and the lines on the screen were: ... socket 0: NE2000 Compatible Ethernet ... executing: 'insmod /modules/net/8390.o' ... + Cannot find archive member /modules/net/8390.o: file does not exist in archive ... insmod exited with status 1 ... executing: 'insmod /modules/pcnet_cs.o' ... + /tmp/pcnet_cs.o: unresolved symbol ei_open ... + /tmp/pcnet_cs.o: unresolved symbol ethdev_init ... + /tmp/pcnet_cs.o: unresolved symbol ei_interrupt ... + /tmp/pcnet_cs.o: unresolved symbol NS8390_init ... insmod exited with status 1 ... + get dev info on socket 0 failed: Resource temporarily unavailable hope this helps, -- bd

Is Eterm installed by default? it should be, but apparently isn't. this was a major bug in the 6.1 release, too. there is an icon for it in the gnome desktop but no program in the file system. *doh!* -- bd

the january 5 pcmcia.img file turns on the link light on my ne2000 -- er, i mean tulip -- er, i mean old tulip -- er, i mean linksys/network-everywhere np10t -- pcmcia card. even better, it does something it never did before: before i see the first installation screen, i hear a high beep and then a low one! also, the dongle's activity light goes on and off, as if the hardware is sensing that packets are going by! the boot procedure still asks me to pick a driver, and after i autoprobe it i still see the "i can't find the device anywhere on your system!" error message. i get that no matter what driver i pick: old tulip, plain tulip, ne2000, ne2000 pci, and several others picked at random out of desperation. i'm almost ready to go out and buy an intel ether express card, but i don't think the local fry's has them any more. tonight i'll try to get my other notebook (with the 3com etherlink III card -- i think it's a 3c585d) talking to the net. i also have dsl at home, so maybe i can provide some assistance there, too. -- bd
[Cooker] NE2000 PCMCIA NIC not recognized
i'm trying to install the 7.0 beta on a notebook with a pcmcia network card. i transfer the pcmcia.img file to a floppy and boot from it, but then the installer claims that it doesn't recognize my hardware. my hardware is a brand-new linksys/network-everywhere pcmcia (not cardbus) card that behaves like an NE2000, and the model appears in the installation menu. i tried the card in a windows notebook and it is indeed working. on a nearly-identical notebook i was able to install mandrake 6.1 using a 3com etherlink III card (model 5x895d, i believe). alas, the 7.0 beta doesn't support the etherlink III yet. how can i troubleshoot this further? grazie, bob desinger

can you download on your 6.1 the kernel-2.2.14-13mdk.i586.rpm and kernel-pcmcia-cs-2.2.14-13mdk.i586.rpm reboot and run a : -$ cardctl status before updating the 6.1 kernel on the notebook with the working 3com etherlink III, i figured that i should update my 2.2.13.7 kernel to the officially-sanctioned version 2.2.13-22. i ran MandrakeUpdate, edited /etc/lilo.conf, and rebooted. the kernel booted fine but no networking services came up. the link light on the pcmcia network card -- really a linksys/network everywhere np10t -- didn't come on. the system was trying to load (something like) /lib/modules/2.2.13-7/pcmcia/* and was failing. i couldn't discover the right place to tell the system to load from /lib/modules/2.2.13-22/pcmcia, and "uname -r" incorrectly claimed that the kernel was 2.2.13-7. (yikes! where is _that_ set, and why didn't it get updated?) on the other hand, i did find the rc.pcmcia script that looks in /lib/modules/preferred/pcmcia/. i cloned the *-22/pcmcia subdirectory into the preferred/ directory, but that still didn't make the link light come on. after an hour i had to give up on it, since i had other deadlines to make tonight. back on the original notebook with the np10t, i tried booting from the january 1 pcmcia.img file. it still didn't find any network hardware, but i found some interesting output while poking around on other virtual screens. alt-f3 sez (sorry about the stupid line breaks, if any -- outlook express, sigh): * PCI bridge probe: * Cirrus PD6729 found, 2 sockets. -Eterm appears in the menu structure but is not installed. Once installed, I can't seem to make it do interesting stuff (transparency, backgroud pixmap) from the menu. i saw a similar problem with 6.1: there was an eterm icon on the gnome desktop at the top right corner -- highly visible -- but there is no eterm program. (enlightenment complained at me that i needed to fix my $PATH, but it was too stupid to know the real cause of the problem. windows tries to blame you after you get a BSOD and then restart it too, come to think of it.) i concluded that mandrake _really_ wanted me to use kde, so i switched over to that. the terminal program is crucial to us geeks. if something so obvious as a desktop icon is broken, other parts of the software must be broken too. -- bd
