Bad practise answering my own question, but yes 0.6mdk compiles, it did
seg fault but restarted when asked, and runs

I hope this helps to track the problem down. I can post anything else
required.
BTW, I would be interested in whether samba / samba3 work when compiled
with -O2 with the current gcc package, since my local mirror seems to be
a few days behind now and might result in me waiting a few days for the
current gcc ...
