 btw is there a way to make it work by default for existing gnome and artsd

gaim will work for everyone (or should), applet will only work for only
Gnome users (or those running a gnome panel). 
I think that's what you were asking?
But like I said before, if people who use KDE really like arts,
re-enable, it doesn't disrupt any functionality in GNOME, just adds a
little bit more binary : )
So, just knock out the --disable-artsc

yeh, I think that was whta was causing a cooker user not to have sound
lemme reenable that back.
