Sorry, just seeing this conversation.

The most likely reason this is happening is because GNOME cannot load
esound. This is a pretty serious bug, but no one seems to want to touch
esound (it is essentially unmaintained) . The solution seems to be to
make sure that esound it getting started on start up. There is a
checkbox in the control center under the sound section.

Perhaps it's already time to switch to asd.

 You're probably low on RAM.

Happens to me with K6-II-300 with 196MB (on AGP Banshee, plenty of free
swap and HDD). Your call. )-:

I see the same behaviour, except with KDE apps (since all of the KDE
infrastructure has to start up, the speed is roughly even). In my case,
I have a dual PIII 1 GHz with 1 GB of RAM, so memory and horsepower is
not an issue here. This is one of the reasons that I've stuck with
WindowMaker, the performance difference is actually noticeable.

 You're probably low on RAM.

I have 128Mb should that not be enough?

[Cooker] starttime

2001-06-25 Thread Henrik Berglund SdU

Found the error.
Seems like all programs need to lookup my hostname when started from
kde or gnome when i added host info to /etc/hosts
all programs start as fast as with windowmaker.
