IMHO, the article wasn't totally comprehensive or fair, but this is quite difficult to do, as you need to know each distro quite well. Apparently, updating the sources was done earlier before installing mplayer, and I don't think this was taken into account in the points anyway. In other words, the only thing urpmi lost points for was irrelevant (the apt dist-upgrade did not upgrade the kernel, so urpmi should not lose anything for an extra command to update the kernel).
