I see the same behaviour, except with KDE apps (since all of the KDE
infrastructure has to start up, the speed is roughly even). In my case,
I have a dual PIII 1 GHz with 1 GB of RAM, so memory and horsepower is
not an issue here. This is one of the reasons that I've stuck with
WindowMaker, the performance difference is actually noticeable.

Happens to me with K6-II-300 with 196MB (on AGP Banshee, plenty of free 
swap and HDD). Your call. )-:
