[Coworking] US Bank moves to close Cubespace
One of the more productive meeting spaces in Portland is apparently about to get the ax from the landlord, US Bank, which some bank investors are worried will backfire big time, as this was probably the smartest use of its 2nd floor on Grand Avenue one could imagine, an investment in Portland's future and profile as a place to find talent, get some real work done. http://cubespacepdx.com/node/2012 Other shareholders in US bank may be interested in following this. The specific managers making this decision will likely be held accountable at the next board meeting. Stay tuned. [Coworking] NYT piece - coworking: 3rd place meet 2nd place
Anyone see this NYT piece that mentions coworking as a new replacement for the office, "a place that provided a special form of social nourishment": "Losing the Income, and the Camaraderie" (http://sn.im/ik8e9)? The writer references urban sociologist Ray Oldenburg, who "talks about the social and psychological importance of what he calls 'third places.' He designates home as 'first place' and work as 'second place.' He describes 'third place' as somewhere neutral, convenient, comfortable and welcoming. It’s where regulars gather and where conversation is lively, engaging and often accompanied by laughter. Soda fountains, beer gardens, cafes and Main Streets have traditionally functioned as third places. But with a dearth of cozy public gathering spots in America today, I was lucky to have found my third place right inside my second place." Since being laid off, her first place has become her second place. She's finding it lacking, of course. "Recently, I heard about a new way for people like me to deal with their second- and third-place needs Coworking seems to be catching on around the country, and I’m hoping that a space will open soon near me." scott. - --- SCOTT TILLITT PR yogi & writer [ sc...@antidotecollective.org / 917.449.6356 / www.twitter.com/bluehwyflaneur ] ANTIDOTE COLLECTIVE socially conscious communications / apply liberally.
