Here's an example of guest post: http://onwebdev.blogspot.com/2010/12/how-to-create-user-defined-function-in.html As you can see, the author of this post has written an HTML document with all its dependencies, sent it to me and I did the publishing stuff. [css-d] ::first-word pseudo-element (and other pseudo-ideas)
I'm following an interesting discussion on www-style about new ideas for new pseudo-elements in CSS3. Latest entries concern the ::first- word pseudo-element. I quote the most relevant ones: -- Pierre Bertet wrote: But the ::first-letter already do this, defining a letter, wich is not very clear too. To clarify this, the CSS3 Selectors spec refers to the Unicode Standard Annex #29 [1]. This document seems very complex to me, but it also contains a “Word Boundaries” section, which seems to defines exactly that. So my questions are: This section could it not be used to clarify what a “word” is? The extensive caveats in the notes to that section of TUS Annex #29 would need to be taken into account. Word boundary identification needs to be tailored for many languages, and the basic Unicode mechanism only aims to provide 'as workable a default as possible'. Words -- and syllables, which present similar issues for selecting appropriate text elements for styling -- are units of spoken language that may or may not be easily isolated as units in written language, depending on particular writing systems as applied to particular languages. In some systems, e.g. Thai, word selection is only possible with dictionary support. So the point is that it doesn't exist a clear definition of word (in its textual representation, but, ouch, also in linguistics) and for that reason this proposal has been rejected. But there are other interesting ideas of this sort, such as: 1. nth-line() Pseudo-class. It should select the nth-line of a block. But is there a definition of line that could be accepted? 2. nth-word() Pseudo-class. See the objections above. The point is that we all have good ideas and hints on CSS, but the sad truth is that on www-style they don't pass the first reader comments. Anyway, I encourage you on following these discussions because there's always something new to learn. Re: [css-d] XHTML or not?
Hi John. Using XHTML today's like riding a dead horse. XHTML will no longer be developed, at least in a reasonable time span. The fact is that XHTML was designed to be served as application/xhtml+xml in order to make it interact with other markup languages, such as SVG, MathML and SMIL. The problem is that IE doesn't support this mime type. The latest update from MS claims that IE9 will support it, but without checking if a document is well-formed or not. That is, MS seems to ignore even the most basic rule of XML. So, if you want my little piece of advice, start getting used to HTML5. I'm not saying that you should use all its elements, but only to take the habit of writing HTML5 documents. You'll find out that HTML5 is really like HTML4, but with a lot of improvements. bye :-) Gabriele Romanato http://www.css-zibaldone.com http://www.css-zibaldone.com/test/ (English) http://www.css-zibaldone.com/articles/ (English) http://onwebdev.blogspot.com/ (English) __ css-discuss [cs...@lists.css-discuss.org] http://www.css-discuss.org/mailman/listinfo/css-d List wiki/FAQ -- http://css-discuss.incutio.com/ List policies -- http://css-discuss.org/policies.html Supported by evolt.org -- http://www.evolt.org/help_support_evolt/

[css-d] A question on CSS compression and minifcation
Hi all. Since the overwhelming majority of my clients own websites hosted on shared hosts, I was wondering if there's a straight way to compress CSS without taking into account the oddities of the default configuration of the web server , which varies greatly from hoster to hoster. Almost a year ago I switched to YUI Compressor for minification and it really works. Now I want to use compression on shared hosts, but I'm afraid of getting thorugh all the tests with the .htaccess file that, by the way, it's limited in some ways on a shared host. And yes, there's no way to access the infamous httpd.conf file on such hosts ! . Did you find a solution to this problem? A couple of months ago I stumbled on a PHP script that performs minifcation using the ob_ function group and includes. Nice, but what about compression? I know that I could activate the gzlib compression via PHP, but I don't know if this will succeed on a shared host. Hope you have some answer, as always. bye Gabriele Romanato :-) http://www.css-zibaldone.com http://www.css-zibaldone.com/test/ (English) http://www.css-zibaldone.com/articles/ (English) http://onwebdev.blogspot.com/ (English) __ css-discuss [cs...@lists.css-discuss.org] http://www.css-discuss.org/mailman/listinfo/css-d List wiki/FAQ -- http://css-discuss.incutio.com/ List policies -- http://css-discuss.org/policies.html Supported by evolt.org -- http://www.evolt.org/help_support_evolt/
Re: [css-d] div id=nav VS. nav
Hi! What you're using here is not CSS3, but actually HTML5 brand new elements. The point is that browsers currently still don't use an associated default style sheet for these elements. Further, some browsers do not recognize them as HTML elements. For example, Firefox 3.6.8 doesn't support them but Firefox 4 does. So the point is: use divs for now, and later, when these new elements will be widely supported, change div=nav to nav. HTH. [css-d] Some obscure details of CSS: China-friendly version
I've been using CSS for almost six years. During this period, sometimes I wondered about some obscure details of CSS specifications. These details are listed below. • LAYERING AND STACKING ORDER When elements are absolutely positioned, it's crucial to determine how they should be overlapped. The problem is that most browsers don't agree on how this stacking order should be displayed. For example, consider the following: view plainprint? • #container { • position: relative; • } • • #child { • position: absolute; • z-index: -1; • } In this case, this element should not be displayed, since we gave to it a negative z-index. Unfortunately, some browsers don't consider 0 as the starting value for the stacking order, so this rule won't work in some cases. • CLEARING AND CONTAINING FLOATS As developers, we all know a series of techniques for clearing and containing floats, which includes: • overflow:auto/hidden • position: absolute I mentioned only those that keep me wondering about how they actually work. We all know that floats make vertical space collapse. However, when the former declaration is applied to a parent element, browsers automatically expand the available vertical space to include floats, even when those floats have no stated height. So we should assume that browsers automatically calculate the height of these elements and react accordingly. Instead, the latter declaration is even more complicated. We just assume that the vertical space is calculated again according to the actual height of floats, but I don't think this is a sufficient explanation. CSS specifications don't say much about this issue. More precisely, they don't say much about the general problem of clearing and containing floats. • NEGATIVE MARGINS The question is: How negative margins affect the computation of the overall dimensions of a containing block? By subtracting a given length, both horizontal and vertical, what is the computed value of the width and height of a containing block? This should be further investigated. http://www.css-zibaldone.com http://www.css-zibaldone.com/test/ (English) http://www.css-zibaldone.com/articles/ (English) http://onwebdev.blogspot.com/ (English) __ css-discuss [cs...@lists.css-discuss.org] http://www.css-discuss.org/mailman/listinfo/css-d List wiki/FAQ -- http://css-discuss.incutio.com/ List policies -- http://css-discuss.org/policies.html Supported by evolt.org -- http://www.evolt.org/help_support_evolt/

Re: [css-d] print stylesheet
Congrats for the website! It's beatiful. ^.^/ Coming to your question, at the moment there are no straight solutions to your problem. To change the background, simply specify a white background color on your print stylesheet: head link rel=stylesheet href=print.css type=text/css media=print / /head body { background: #fff; color: #000; } You can even get rid of unwanted elements: #navigation {display: none;} Footer is more problematic. In CSS for print you cannot use absolute positioning to put your footer at the very bottom of your page. More precisely, some browsers accept it but with unexpected results. So the best thing you can do is using a fallback solution, like specifying a certain amount of padding and margins to push the footer bottomside. Of course you need to perform some calculations on each page. Kris, you should basically use cascade. [css-d] An image gallery with a definition list and CSS
Hi! If I recall correctly, this is a smart technique proposed by Ingo Chao on his website (http://www.satzansatz.de/css.html). It actually adds more semantics to the styling of an image gallery. http://onwebdev.blogspot.com/2010/06/image-gallery-with-definition-list-and.html I didn't test it in IE. Could you please write some comments? Screenshots are really appreciated. The main problem here is when you try to make more dt and dd elements appear on the same line, for example: dt dd dt dd dt dd dt dd here you have to make some nasty space calculations and rely on one of the 9 rules governing float behavior (that saying: when there's no more space available, put the float on the next line). Actually, floats inside the dl element are _contained_ but NOT cleared. Suggestions? Improvements? Re: [css-d] Text input height and CSS font size/family
So your tests highlight the input box adapts to font size and family? Nope. As the title of the tests say, only their _height_. For that reason I specified a width for the input elements. Input elements are inline-block elements. the problem you mentioned: label for=testTest/label input type=text name=test id=test / label { font: 1em Arial, sans-serif; vertical-align: middle; } input { font: 1em Arial, sans-serif; vertical-align: middle; } you can fix it with this, but it's really rare that a web developer wants to align these elements this way, because it causes many troubles. [css-d] Feedback needed: improving the quality of my CSS posts
Hi all, since January I started the blog that you can see in my signature. I've published almost 80 posts on CSS so far. But now I need your help, because I don't exactly know if I'm writing good posts on just junk. I need your help because you're the most skilled CSS community on the WWW. I don't receive many useful comments on my blog, except those from Alan Gresley (^.^). Re: [css-d] validators tied up today?
Honestly speaking guys, I don't see the point with using the W3C CSS Validator today. If you need parsing check, it's already performed by most browsers. If you need version checking, simply stick to each style definition explained in the specs. For example, simply add profile=cssn to your validator URI to check if your styles conform to the n spec (1, 2, 3). Of course, this is NOT mandatory, because the bigon age of W3C CSS badges is over. A website should be more than simply validated to satisfy user needs: it should be usable, user- friendly and accessible. Further, it should present interesting and useful contents. That's all. A user don't care a fig if you're using 'border-radius' or '-moz-border-radius', remember that. By the way, as a W3C translator I also noticed that most W3C pages don't validate. Re: [css-d] Another IE6 issue I don't understand
Basically, when you test something with CSS, you should always make sure that no DOM interactions are actually active, that is, you should remove all JS files from your page. Then you can start testing. Since you said that all elements have layout, I guess it's something related to element dimensions and floats. I can't see your CSS code right here in IE, but try to use this: http://www.css-zibaldone.com/code/jquery/ie6fix/ since you're familiar with JS scripting, this could help you with testing. Once you've found out what's wrong with IE, you can move the CSS declarations from the ie6fix plugin to your IE6 css file. [css-d] Why JavaScript and CSS can work well together
Eric Meyer once said: JavaScript will save us all. I started to effectively work with JavaScript almost a year ago, when I discovered the powerful features of jQuery and the DOM. I have to say that JavaScript and CSS can work well together, especially when dealing with browsers inconsistencies and automating some repetitive tasks. Did you know, for example, that with jQuery you can automatically clear floats without manually adding the infamous .clearfix class? Of course I'm talking about unobtrusive JavaScript, but you get the idea. Sometimes on this list I see people who try to fix some problems with long and tedious CSS procedures that could be easily solved with a single JavaScript statement... and in a cross-browser way! So here's a little piece of advice: don't fear JavaScript as the boogey-man! Try to discover its features, say, rediscover them, and you will see how your daily work on web sites is greatily improved.
