I've tried nv, and even the framebuffer. No difference.
Mind you, that was a while ago. I'll have to try again.

See the installation report section of the installation manual.
www.debian.org, release info, testing, debian-installer page
installation guide.

choose the one for your arch in the format you wish.

You should read these pages and the manual anyway before trying the
install.

Good hint. I'll try the latest CDs... maybe one of them already has the
2.6.18 kernel, reported to work with these boards.

Since its sort of new hardware, perhaps I should post a report
on my etch installation later? Do you know where should I post it?

hmmm... once I built the kernel module and installed it, it took about
2hrs before i got the first freeze... so it seems you won't have that
problem.

perhaps the problem only shows up in correlation with
linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64_2.6.18-3 ?

Checking the FAQ led me to do "update-alternatives --config java" and
choosing the sun java version, as it was set to something else. This
solved the issue.

I also experienced those freezes.
I noticed it started when upgrading from nvidia's proprietary driver

I've switched to "nv" 3 days ago and the problem went away.

using the .jar file downloaded from the site. Never tried with the

There is absolutely no difference :-)

In fact the only "real" kernel image package in that list is:
linux-image-2.6.17-2amd64.
the others are just meta packages that pull in that one.

When in doubt, go with the default (and don't install in expert mode
unless you really need to).

install: choose kernel

2006-10-28 Thread Douglas Tutty
I'm in the midst of a new install on my new computer:

Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe AM2 motherboard
AMD Athlon 3800+ CPU
Asus EN7300GT graphics card
1 GB ram
2 Seagate 7200 80 GB SATA drives in raid1 with lvm.

Using the netinst.iso image via usb stick boot hd-media.

I'm at the point of choosing which kernel to install:

linux-image-2.6-amd64-generic
linux-image-2.6.17-2amd64
linux-image-2.6-amd64

The installer doesn't give any hints other than showing the generic
selected. It would be nice if there was some guidance but there isn't,
so I'm asking here.

What is the difference and what would you recommend?

Thanks,

Doug.

Jabref with sun-java5-jre

2006-10-28 Thread Seb
Hi everybody,

Are any of you successfully using Jabref (bibtex file editor) in AMD64?
I had sun-java5-jre installed, and Jabref has this in its Depends:

Depends: sun-java5-jre | j2re1.4 | j2re1.5 | sun-j2sdk1.5

Both of them installed without any problems, but when trying to run
Jabref, I get:

---<---cut here---start-->---
Unable to create graphical interface.
Importing in unknown format:
Error opening file ''
---<---cut here---end>---

It seems to be a message from java, but googling for the first line of
text, I get a meager 2 hits, none related to Debian or Jabref.

I tried installing the package in my 32-bit chroot, and it runs fine from
there, but I'd prefer to run in the main AMD64 system.

Any clues welcome, and apologies if this is a bit off-topic.

Cheers,

If it seems to be the same problem, it could help if details were
sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've found the keyboard still works to a limited extent. If I have a
text tntry window open at the moment of freeze, it continues to accept
input. If it's an open shell window. I can even execute commands.
But if anything happens to terminate input (such as hitting return on a
URL entry window in a browser) the freeze becomes complete.

I'm not sure whether it is still possible to ssh in from another system
when it freezes. IN any case when it was possible, it was too slow to
be usable (keypress echo in excess of 15 seconds, protocol delays enough
to time out during initial connection)

I've had this same behaviour recently as well; seems to happen with the X
sleep function (amdx2 m2pv-vm)... (I also tried to login with ssh. pings but
connection is refused) I thought it was an upgrade to xorg 7.1.
that did it. I've downgraded to 7.0 and it hasn't happened now for about 2
days.

Could you try opening your sshd server and try to connect to the frozen
machine when that happens? It would rule out kernel problems and it would
concentrate the problem on X. Do you use proprietary drivers? That might
be another issue: try using only Xorg drivers.

Debian AMD64 freeze !

2006-10-28 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Dear maintainers,

somebody wrote about Debian AMD64 complete freeze. Yes, I can confirm this
behaviour !

This is what I watched:

During normal working, everything froze: mouse, keyboard, window, everything.
Even, when I watched a movie, this happened twice. This behaviour is similar
to BUG#379480.

But what is more important: This behaviour is on my 32-bit-machine, too !

And both machines do have differnent hardware:

32-bit computer with AMD Athlon XP and Nvidia-Card, the
64-bit computer with AMD64 Turion and ATI-Card !

But both use kernel 2.6.18 ! On 32-bit the Debian-original-kernel, on 64-Bit a
selfcompiled out of the Debian-sources.

O.k., I tested RAM on both = o.k.
I checked the logs, and I discovered this:

Oct 28 19:45:29 protheus2 kernel: dbus-launch[2857]: segfault at
 rip 2ba3403ed590 rsp 7fff6aa4d188 error 4

Maybe this is the reason, although these messages appear on kernel 2.6.17,
too. On 2.6.17 everything went fine.

So, as both machines behave the same, I suppose a kernel problem.

And last but not least, another hint: The machines do freeze everytime,
whenever no one worked on it, so, when there were no keyboard or other input.

I hope, my little desription will help to find the bug.

Best regards

Hans

OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 64-bit: error opening literature datase and other databses?

2006-10-28 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

I try to use the 64-bit version of OOo 2.-0.4 on my Etch AMD64 machine. If I
try to open the literature databse it gives me an error saying that the columns
cannot be found. Opening the same database from my 32-bit choooted OOo works
OK. Is this a known bug in the 64-bit version ?

I also tried to open a PostgreSQL databse, using the latest PostgreSQL JDBC
driver. If I try to query or create forms OOo Base crashes. Is this a known bug?

Is there anyone who has the feautures I try to use working?

(I have tried to find a bug-reports for both problems but I could not find any)

TIA

Groeten,
