linux-image-amd64 will install 2.8.x and 3.0.x also, 
linux-image-2.6-amd64 will only install 2.6.x kernels.

use dpkg -i  xyz.deb to force installation.
The Packages you downloaded are in
/var/cache/apt/packages/
