After reboot I got only command line interface, but I can start X server and get gray window with terminal window in 1600x1200 which means graphic card is not a problem (see lspci output below). By suggestion of sigi I ran 'dkpg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' which failed. I am running 2.6.12-686-smp with udev 0.87-1 and the disk enumeration is quite flaky as some times it boots properly and other times not. udev also has a problem with my Radeon 7000VE in that I did have a few problems with disc enumeration order differing between install and sarge, but this was on a fairly complex system with 4 SATA drives, a couple of genuine scsi drives and a legacy PATA (ie IDE) drive. The grub menu written by the installer tried to boot from the wrong disc (because of said enumeration difference), so I used a grub floppy and edited the entries on the first boot, and then changed them permanently. I should have mentioned in my earlier reply that I think I also had to correct /etc/fstab which was also written incorrectly by the installer. I may also have had to correct other configuration files, but it is a long time ago now. Not difficult once you realize what is going on, but it would be very tough for anyone new to Linux to sort out and you definitely have to think about how to get a bootable system. I think that I needed to mount the target file system with a rescue disc in order to fix /etc/fstab. But as several people have said, there should not be a problem with a single disc. ael I have done 2 netinstall around chrismass time, one "sarge and one "etch", on 2 boxes with asus A8N-sli MB and one sata hd. Re: SATA, RAID, A8N-E, 3800+ help
Keith Ballantyne wrote: Hi, I recently bought an Asus A8N-E mobo and AMD64 3800+ CPU. I then bought RAM, a case, and an ATI 300-based PCI Express 16 video card. I used netinstall sarge and managed to install 32-bit using the 2.6 kernel (as the 2.4 kernel wouldn't recognize my network card). ...a few days passed, and I realized that I wanted the 64-bit core. I recompiled the kernel, and then realized there was a 64-bit distribution, so I downloaded both the testing release (Etch) and the 31r1a netinstalls. 31r1a didn't recognize my onboard network, but Etch did. For the 31r1a to recognize your network, if it went as in my case, the installer shouldhave proposed you with a list of network modules. You have to choose something call nforether,I believe. ...a few more days passed and I decided to buy 4 SATA II drives in an attempt to run RAID 0+1. I configured the BIOS and ran the installer, but the installer sees hda through hdd rather than a single RAID drive. In subsequent research (including this list archive) it appears that the BIOS RAID is considered 'inferior' to the software RAID support in Linux. So, my questions are: 1) Why is the ASUS BIOS RAID inferior to software RAID on Linux? 2) Is it possible to install 31r1a instead of the Etch release (I'm not overly keen on working with Etch, but will do it if it's a better 64-bit option...In the few days I played with 64-bit Etch it seemed to work well, but I didn't have most of the utilties I need available from the installer/package manager). 3) Do I need to flash the BIOS for things to work? 4) Is ATI 300 support better in Etch? Gnomemeeting and pwc module (Quickcam Pro 4000)

Then, check that the mirror you choose is a primary mirror ( list here: http://amd64.debian.net/README.mirrors.html ). Then: it happend to myself the same problem about 2 weeks ago. I solved it by getting a newer image of the netinstall. Also if you manage to get on the net during the install, you may choose ( if you are installing etch) to continu the install without rebooting the machine, and then choose to install a desktop system, and if it is your lucky day you may have what you need. If KDE don't want to install because of broken package, there a work around, but we will see that if it append. Keep triing Thierry

I decided to overwrite hda1 and using the sid-amd64-netinst.iso ~(Feb 7), first atemp failed in the step to install grub, failed to install lilo, the atemps failed till I discover (using fdisk from my old debian) the partition is was 0C (NTFS), I changed the ID and check the fs in the hda1 was OK! The next atemp was prety smooth as all the other people say, GREAT WORK! md5sum fe18b184891f2b0c493744f5b02dd202 sid-amd64-netinst.iso I guess the partitioner only sets the partition type when actualy creating the partition, not when just formating it. That would be a bug in the partitioner. Please report this to the Debian BTS (e.g. with reportbug), this should affect i386 as well. MfG Goswin Yes it does affect i386 as well. I go that yesterday, but did not have time to look into it. Thierry -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

AMD64 Netinstall
Yesterday, I installed amd64/pure64 with no problem. Unhappy this a few side matter, I decided to reinstall it. Today, after a clean boot, good connection to debian.inode.at, the installer is telling me there is no partitionable media in the computer. So I tried: To get it empty with debian install floppy To partion it with the same, and with some Bill Gates staff, I got the same result with amd64. Any idea what happend between yesterday and today? Thierry -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I installed le scsi module by hand: modprobe mptscsi... and it works: I can see (dmesg) the two hard disks attached. Installation problem with tyan mainboard
I cannot install debian-amd64 on my Tyan based machine. This problem looks like a previous one, posted here some weeks ago. PROBLEM: instalation "freeze" after loading the scsi driver. BUT: actually, I have succeded one installation (3 weeks ago); after upgrading the system (and the kernel) some days ago, I could not reboot. So, I decided to reinstall...When the system whas working (before I upgraded it), it was also difficult to reboot the machine, with a lot of "retry" of the scsi driver during the boot sequence. MATERIAL: Tyan S4882 with 4 processors, Bradcom NetxTrem network adapter, NCR-like scsi controller; 8 Gb of ram, 2 scsi (73gb) discs. DESCRIPTION OF INSTALLATION SEQUENCE: - I use: "sid-amd64-netinst.iso26-Oct-2004 05:56" - boot options: expert sym53c8xx=safe:y 1) after the 1rst detection of material, I load only: tg3, generic-ide, ide-generic, ide-cd, isofs; then I can configure the network (static adress, not dhcp), and it works. 2) I choose the mirror: debian.inode.at and /pure64/ unstable distribution 4) I load mptscsih and here, the machine freezes. any idea ? -- Thierry Dumont.
