As I'm using nVidia card with drivers 9625, I don't need Xgl. I just
installed beryl and launched beryl-manager. It just works.

Re: AMD64-generic doesn't see all 4GB RAM?

2006-11-06 Thread vitko
I only know of two (in my eyes) valid reasons to build your own kernel:

 1. you hate initrd since it too often doesn't work
 2. you need/want some extra patch

Two more reasons:

1) I don't like seeing errors / misdetected hardware in kernel messages.
Far too many times I've seen loading drivers for hardware that was never
there. As for kernel, I want it to be clean and do its work for the
exact hardware I use,

2) The may be some hardware I don't want / need supported, typically
multimedia devices on servers. The less code runs, the smaller
possibility something can go wrong in unexpected places.

Re: NVidia official driver

2006-09-16 Thread vitko

When compiling a kernel with make-kpkg and using the --append-to-version
option, I couldn't make m-a produce a package that would install the
module in the right directory (it doesn't take the local version into
 account). But...

I'm used to something like

  ...
  make-kpkg kernel-image --append-to-version -v1
  make-kpkg modules-image --append-to-version -v1
  cd ..
  dpkg -i *-v1*deb
  ...

Anyway, what is this module-assistant thing for? How can it help me? I
know it exists, but so far I'm happy with the two lines above. Is it
worth to learn to use m-a? How can I start?

When I press the up or the down button, the OSD appears correctly but
this control is associated to the first channel in the mixer (that is
headphones). The actual mixer channel that controls the audio is the
 Analog front.

How can I change this association? For the volume control applet it has
been enough editing its preferences, but I can't find any information
 about the keyboard controls.

Long time ago, in Gnome 2.6, the keyboard shortcuts used the same
channel as the one chosen in panel applet properties. Now in 2.14 it
looks like keyboard shortcuts really control only Master channel
on my SB Live! 5.1 card.

You may want to ask in some Gnome forum or mailing list, or maybe file
a bug against gnome-control-center(?). IIRC I actually used keyboard
shortcuts to control PCM only for a good reason, now it doesn't seem
to be possible.

Your first channel in mixer being headphones looks really strange,
I'd expect Master.

 I googled, and found ogle. I installed ogle-gui ogle-mmx. I am able

Last time I saw ogle (winter 2005?) it looked a bit outdated. It
supports DVD menus, though.

ogle crashes. I restart it, playing _same_ DVD, and it invariably

Re: Strange Network/Firewall problem

2006-01-29 Thread vitko

Stefan Lüthje napsal(a):

...

is called by:

iptables -A INPUT -i ppp0 -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT

...

When I ping a machine in the internet, I see the following result on tcpdump:

19:35:24.866434 IP 21x.8x.7x.7x 21x.18x.14x.10x: ICMP echo request, id
46871, seq 1536, length 64

46871, seq 1536, length 64

But on the log I see the following:

Jan 25 19:35:24 speedy kernel: denied: IN=ppp0 OUT= MAC=
SRC=21x.18x.14x.10x DST=21x.8x.7x.7x LEN=84 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=58
ID=11184 PROTO=ICMP TYPE=0 CODE=0 ID=46871 SEQ=1536

My question: Why will this packet not accepted by the ACCEPT state rule
withe the 2.6.15 kernel?

I'm not sure you can speak about RELATED and ESTABLISHED in the context of ICMP;
if I'm not mistaken this is stateless affair.

I've got dedicated rule for ICMP only in my firewall scripts, something like

   iptables -A INPUT -i ppp0 -p ICMP --icmp-type echo-request -j ACCEPT

Hope this helps you.

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong (but it works for me anyway).

Re: ISO md5sum signing paranoia

2005-09-30 Thread vitko
The idea is that either YOU meet these people, or that somebody you trust did
it for you, or that somebody you trust knows somebody he trusts who knows
this trusty gal, who had a relation with a bloke, who met the guy at this
congress wich he now trusts.

Yes, that is the idea of signing the keys by CA. It seems gpg supports this:

quote
gpg: WARNING: This key is not certified with a trusted signature!
/quote

Does it mean that the key is certified, but I miss key of certificator; then
I'd like to know where to get this certificate authority key; OR does it mean
this key is not certified at all?

ISO md5sum signing paranoia

2005-09-29 Thread vitko

I'm reinventing the wheel while learnig abou Debian key signing, so far
I've been able to verify sarge-amd64 DVD iso images via

$ gpg --verify MD5SUMS.sign MD5SUMS
gpg: Signature made Mon 13 Jun 2005 10:48:17 PM CEST using DSA key ID F6A32A8E
gpg: Good signature from Santiago Garcia Mantinan (manty) [EMAIL PROTECTED]
gpg: aka Santiago Garcia Mantinan (manty) [EMAIL PROTECTED]
gpg: aka Santiago Garcia Mantinan (manty) [EMAIL PROTECTED]
gpg: WARNING: This key is not certified with a trusted signature!
gpg: There is no indication that the signature belongs to the owner.
Primary key fingerprint: 3F0A 12FC 0B55 A917 D791 82D3 72FD C205 F6A3 2A8E

I'd like to know how to get rid of warning above. So far I've imported the
whole Debian keyring

gpg --import /usr/share/keyrings/debian-keyring.gpg

which action may be pretty stupid, but I expected some higher authority key
being present there, well, it is not, as I'm still getting warning about not
certified key.

Is there anything like Debian CA key, or shoul I ask Santiago Garcia Mantinan
about his key's fingerprint?

Thanks for any enlightement.

If you are using nvidia kernel module, you should never use nvidia

worked at least for me on several machines with GeForce video cards).
