Well, busybox wc actually, but yeah. This is a critical issue, installing
the base system will be impossible until it's fixed.

We have a workaround for this now so I don't think it's a blocker for 3.0.18.
I'd rather leave well alone for the moment.

Merely by editing the syslinux.cfg file I guess, during the build.

Yes but to do that, I need to mount the image with the loopback. And
for this you need to be root ... debian-cd works without being root
(except on sparc i think) and i don't want to loose this feature because
of this new step that can be easily done at your level.

I agree is a good idea), add this argument to the default syslinux
config in the 2.88mb image (those are always used for CDROMs AFAIK) that
  you generate.

 Hmm, are we sure?

I could certain setup dbootstrap to consider that when imagesize=2.88,
 that we're probably a CD-ROM. In fact, I already have a dbootstrap
 patch locally to do this.

 I guess it's harmless...

Your change is in dbootstrap or in the build process ? I think the
latter would be better... otherwise you'll never be able to run without
the cdrom stuff while using a 2.88mb image (it may not be usual but that
may happen, for example when someone is using user mode linux or
something like that).

That totally depends on the urgency. Right now I'm in a mood to fix as much

Bug#123973: Installer fails to mount FAT32 partition to get kernel and driver modules

2001-12-14 Thread Tom Wzietek

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 3.0.17-2001-11-18 (i386)

I'm trying to install woody over the network by invoking the installer
within DOS (through install.bat). In order to achieve that, I copy
loadlin.exe, linux, root.bin, rescue.bin and drivers.tgz onto a FAT32
partition which will co-exist with my woody installation. I chose this
method, because the machine I work on does not have a floppy
drive nor CD (for now).

After creating and formatting Linux partitions, I get to the point where
I need to install kernel and driver modules, but when I point to
harddisk, I get: The partition was not mounted successfully.
+ error from 3rd console (alt+f3):
Dec 14 4:20:47 (none) user.info dbootstrap[53]: mount: Mounting /dev/hda1 on
/instmnt failed: no such device
Dec 14 4:20:47 (none) user.info dbootstrap[53]: The partition was not mounted
successfully.

So, I choose Alternate1: mount a previously-initialized partition
to mount /dev/hda1 at /instmnt (picking Other for mount point)
and get an error Mount Failed: No such file or directory.
However, if I do it manually mount /dev/hda1 /instmnt -- it works!

Then, I'm back to installing kernel and driver modules.
I select mounted this time, since I already mounted manually,
and everything is OK.

Something's wrong there somewhere. I realize this is not
the preferred method of installation, but to some people this is
the only choice available.

Isn't that the right thing? If not, please check in a fix.

the scripts/rootdisk/SMALL_BASE_LIST_i386_reiserfs is correct.

  2) Install Kernel and Driver Modules -
harddisk : partition on the hard disk -
/dev/hda6: Linux native (happens to be reiserfs) -
Mount Failed (The partition was not mounted successfully.)

I would suggest booting with 'debug' option, trying the actual 'mount'
arguments as reported in the system log when you use debug.

the problem is interesting: the code looks at the partition number (82)
and then reverse maps that to ``ext2'' and mounts with that -t option.

since ext3, ext2, xfs, and resierfs all share that same code, i wrote a
little routine that uses the magic number code from partition_config.c,
added it to util.c, and used that if the partition is ``ext2''.

it works for reiserfs, anyway.

* code not checked in yet, want to test with ext2

  3) ftp.us.debian.org seems to be out of date, the modules installed were
 2.2.19-reiserfs

Huh, that's wierd. Seems like a build problem -- try 'make distclean'
 before building.

will do.

After installing the base system over the network (FTP) and booting

But all I get is an error:

I check the network interfaces and it seems like ifconfig returns
no ethX up! Next, I look at rc2.d and see:

S13pcmcia

...but nowhere can I find dhcp. I start it manually on another console
and, of course, this corrects the problem.

How about adding S15dhclient? Or perhaps this should be handled

That totally depends on the urgency. Right now I'm in a mood to fix as much
as possible for the freeze, so expect a higher rate of uploads than normal.

Expect the CA stuff in debiandoc-sgml with urgency=high. But please also contact
aj to make him aware of this urgently needed upload.

Oh, didn't know you listened here, thanks.

After posting this, I realized debiandoc-sgml isn't in base, so the
freeze doesn't affect it yet. No need to contact aj then.

Ehm, could we add tune2fs to SMALL_BASE_LIST_i386? It needs just ~10kB
(compressed) and would make clean ext3 transition easier.

Gruss/Regards,
Eduard.

Re: 3.0.18 status confirmation

2001-12-14 Thread David Kimdon

The issue was the wrong library to begin with getting put on the root
disk, I think. We've seen lots of conflicting successes and failures
on this one so it is difficult to be certain. Hopefully I can get
somethign built/tested and uploaded today or tomorrow and that will
 clear things up.

i386 test build at (out of cvs as of sometime this morning):
http://people.debian.org/~dwhedon/dists/woody/main/disks-i386/current/

I've tested the idepci flavor an it doesn't have the flashing screen
problem. I think I have a good busybox fix (didn't get a chance to
actually complete an install), but I built these before the official
fix was available.

Package: debootstrap
Version: 0.1.15.5

Hi,

I'm using the current version (3.0.15-2001-10-18) of the boot disks to
install a Debian system (Woddy). When selecting kernel modules (I'm
installing over PLIP) there is a problem in editing the parameters for the
kernel modules. When I enter some parameters and load the module, this is
no problem. But if the module loading fails, I want to try other
parameters... At this time it isn't possible to call the same module
without kernel parameters. I change the input line in the installer, but
the file /target/etc/modutils/module-name isn't changed!

Greetings Tobi

PS: The module description for PLIP is obsolete! PLIP uses the parport_pc
and parport modules for hardware access. Should I open a new bug for this?

Bug#123782: acknowledged by developer (Re: Bug#123782: boot-floppies: dbootstrap's wget should use passive ftp)

2001-12-14 Thread Mike Coleman

[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Debian Bug Tracking System) writes:
Anyhow, it's irrelevant. Since busybox wget doens't support this
argument, the user's request to use this argument is hereby denied.
 :)

Bug submitter, if busybox wget is not using ftp in the right way,
please file a bug on busybox, not on the boot-floppies. Thanks.

Turns out that busybox wget *does* use passive ftp by default, which it
should, but that there's a bug in the way it's doing name lookups.
(The problem is that it does a second DNS lookup for the PASV connection,
which won't necessarily return the same IP for a round-robin DNS situation
like ftp.us.debian.org, so the download fails.)

A workaround is to use a specific IP address instead of the hostname.

I'll file against busybox.

Mike

Re: 3.0.18 status confirmation

2001-12-14 Thread Chris Tillman

On powerpc, I'm getting a sudden increase in the root disk size from
a couple of nights ago. The build fails with:

rootpmac.bin larger than rootpmac1440.bin (1711223 1474560)

As soon as it's buildable again, I'll try the flashing screen test
again. I did finish the build after David's fix was put in, and the
problem was still there. So I'm hoping Adam's fix is nicer.
