new libc6

2002-01-26 Thread John H. Robinson, IV

ome congratulations may be in order, i am not sure

i updated sid again this afternoon (around midnight GMT), and rebuilt
the bootfloppies. it failed:

I: single locale mode forced for flavor '', no FB console support
I: ld.so on this architecture is ld-linux.so.2
E: expected to find /lib/libc-2.2.4.so; upgrade local libc to 2.2.4
E: ./rootdisk.sh abort
make[1]: *** [root.bin] Error 255
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/boot-floppies/woody/boot-floppies'
make: *** [build] Error 2
zsh: exit 2 make

due to the new libc6 (2.2.5-1). the congratulations that may be in order
is the ``b-f no longer builds against sid'' of course, i may be totaly
out to lunch on that one.

my question: are we supposed to build against libc-2.2.4 or -2.2.5?
changelog indicates that -2.2.5 fixes the glob problem, so i guess that
answers my question.

i'd fix the sources, but it is _way_ past my bedtime ATM (past midnight
local time :)

Bug#130926: boot-floppies: selection of rescue disk source only shows floppies after network fail

2002-01-26 Thread christian mock

Package: boot-floppies
Version: N/A; reported 2002-01-26
Severity: normal

(b-f version is current CVS)

at the install kernel and driver step, I gave a network location which
contains a bad resc1440.bin; after confirming the unable to mount the
rescue floppy error message, the next screen to come up is select
floppy disk drive which only offers me /dev/fd0 and /dev/fd1, it's missing
all the other options. cancel brings two more error messages and puts me
back to the main menu...

Bug#129479: scsi disk not detected

2002-01-26 Thread Michael Schmitz

I did it, but didn' work. It can'f find the device.

Well, certainly, you do not have a scsi disk that mac-fdisk can
find. Is it by chance a pc-formatted scsi? mac-fdisk would try to read
the partition table at the beginning of the disk, which is an Apple
 format.

Did we get any information out of him regarding the kernel version and
devfs support? We need the output of cat /proc/partitions to be specific.

If there's nothing shown by cat /proc/partitions (in the interactive
shell) the disk really isn't found by the SCSI controller (some disks seem
to behave funny at SCSI ID 0 on MESH). The relevant section of the dmesg
log (on console #4) should tell.

Michael

AFAIK, our goal is to build it against woody, not sid. There's no
reason to build against sid, boot-floppies dies with woody. It still
needs a few packages from unstable, that's taken into account with
make check.

3.0.18, such as the debootstrap problems, lilo on i386, the fact that

Any changes to choose_medium.c will require a lot of testing; that code

Looks like there were some nasty surprises in the changes jaqque had
so carefully prepared. There's been so little activity lately, no
one's noticed.

Sure, just warn people they can't install from instant harddisk or
mounted partitions.

I do see what you mean about the code; I've just about got these
things fixed though. The tentacles do reach around a bit, so if the
rest of the release is stable, it's probably best to hold off as you
say.

spurios crashes of dbootstrap, a trace...

2002-01-26 Thread christian mock

hi,

I've been testing b-f on PReP for a while, and encountered strange
crashes (or restarts) of dbootstrap at the end or after the
debootstrap step -- this is related to the serial console install
problems related in #126370.

now, the conclusion I've come to is that by disabling line 89 in
debootstrap's woody shell script, which reads

87:cat $TARGET/dev/initctl /dev/null
88:CAT_PID=$!
89:on_exit kill $CAT_PID /dev/null 21

dbootstrap has a chance to survive the end of debootstrap; looks like
that kill, which seems to just show up as : no such pid when
you look closely, somehow manages to take dbootstrap with it.

my manual tests have shown that dbootstrap's exit code in this case
is 143, which I also can't explain: apart from some exit(1)
statements, the only one which sets such a high value is the
exit(128+sig) at crash.c:45, but that is in a signal handler which
only gets installed for SEGV, as far as I follow the code. 143 is 128
+ SIGTERM.

well, I'm a bit confused -- the only clear thing is that with that
line commented out, stuff which occurs in dbootstrap after
debootstrap is finished does happen, while without that change it
crashes reproducibly (and I've done quite a few test runs this night).

I hope somebody can solve that mystery...

ciao,

cm.

Bug#126370: serial console problem solved, I think...

2002-01-26 Thread christian mock

hi,

I think I found the solution to the inittab doesn't get changed for
serial console problem.

utilities/dbootstrap/baseconfig.c:155:

if (bootargs.console[5]==',') ttyspeed=atoi(bootargs.console+6);

is dereferencing a NULL pointer (bootargs.console) when there's no
console=ttyXX on the kernel command line.

this crashes dbootstrap just before it can adapt the inittab.

this bug only shows up if you've both got a serial console and don't
give that explicitly on the kernel command line.

HTH,

cm.
