I offer the attached patch for your delectation and delight It's not appropriate to consider this for the 5.4 release, and I'm unsure whether it would belong in the 5.4.x line at all (let alone back-porting it to 5.3.x). We could perhaps consider offering it as an official patch - at least once it's received a bit more examination/polishing. But the basic functionality seems to work OK. Comments welcome.
