Thanks for submitting this wishlist bug report.

Labplot does offer the possiblity to plot a 2D graph from data that is stored
along one row in the format y1 | y2 | y3 ...

Does this suit your needs well enough, or would you like me to forward the
request to the upstream developer of labplot?

Bug#337047: gobby segfaults on the second running for me too.

2005-11-08 Thread Helen Faulkner
Package: gobby
Version: 0.2.2-2
Followup-For: Bug #337047

Hi,

I am also getting this bug. I ran gobby once the other day, and it
worked fine. But now it segfaults.

What information can I provide that might help? (Please give me
specific instructions - I'm not very experienced with tracing the causes
of such things.)

Bug#310695: mozilla-firefox: can't edit bookmarks

2005-05-25 Thread Helen Faulkner
Package: mozilla-firefox
Version: 1.0.4-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

I'm not sure if the bug I'm seeing is the same problem as #307003 or not, though
the behaviour is somewhat different.

I am consistently (ie through several restarts of firefox and even rebooting the
computer) seeing the following:

1. When I try to "manage bookmarks" from the Bookmarks menu nothing
happens.

2. When I right-click on a bookmark and choose "properties" I get
the properties dialog. Clicking "OK" in the dialog sends my processsor to 100%
and mozilla becomes unresponsive. It remains so until a warning dialog shows
saying "A script on this page is causing mozilla to run slowly. If it continues
to run, your computer may become unresponsive. Do you want to abort the
script?".

Clicking OK to abort the script and then "Cancel" on the
bookmark properties dialog seems to stop the problem, but the bookmark
has remained unedited.

I do seem to be able to right-click in the bookmarks menu and choose to
delete a bookmark.

Let me know if I can provide any further information.

Helen.

Bug#330120: kverbos doesn't load verbs

2005-09-25 Thread Helen Faulkner
Package: kverbos
Version: 4:3.4.2-2
Severity: important

Hi,

I am trying to use kverbos to practise my Spanish verbs :)
I am using it with the default file of verbs that it comes with, but it is
seemingly having trouble loading the verbs in the file. For most of the verbs
is throws a warning dialog saying "There is a problem with the verb $VERB.
Please check the verb in the edit dialog". For some of the verbs (maybe 1 in 8
or so) it works.

I don't know what is causing this, and I don't know whether it is a new problem,
because I have only ever looked at kverbos very briefly before. However,
looking at the "edit verb list" dialog, it looks to me that maybe kverbos is not
reading the list of verbs correctly from the file. It seems to have some of the
Spanish mixed in with the column that is supposed to contain the other language
(in my case, this should be English), and it is also not displaying the
accentedhave no idea characters correctly. Maybe there is a problem with the
format of the verb file, which is located in
/usr/share/apps/kverbos/data/en/verbos.verbos.

Thanks,

Helen

Bug#320275: request for debian-science mailing list

2005-07-27 Thread Helen Faulkner
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Package: lists.debian.org
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

I want to request the creation of a mailing list for people using Debian to do
Science to communicate with each other. This is a result of the talk I gave at
Debconf5 about "Using Debian for Science Research". I've since received emails
from several people, expressing interest in the general idea, and I think that
it would be a good start to allow people who are interested in the use of Debian
as an OS for scientific research to communicate easily via a mailing list.

Name: debian-science

Rationale: Research scientists and students have a fairly specific set of needs
from their operating system. The aim of this list is to allow people who are
interested in using Debian for science and science research to communicate about
packages that are particularly useful, discuss problems that commonly occur in
scientific applications, and talk about general issues that arise when using
Debian for science. One possible aim of the list would be to discuss the
creation of a Custom Debian Distribution for use in science research.

Short Description: using debian for science and related research

Long Description: Debian Science: For discussion of issues relating to the use
of Debian for science research, including useful packages, particular problems
faced by scientists using Debian, how to make Debian more useful to scientists,
etc.

Bug#323337: blitz++ 0.8 doesn't work with gcc4

2005-08-15 Thread Helen Faulkner
Package: blitz++
Version: 1:0.8-5
Severity: important

Hi,

I have been trying to compile my C++ code, which uses the blitz library, and I
got a bunch of errors[1] in templates of blitz things that were instantiated by
variables in my code. I searched on the errors I was getting, and found some
discussion in the blitz++ mailing list about this problem [2][3][4].

Following the suggestion in the discussion, I downloaded the blitz++ cvs
sources, compiled them and installed the library so produced. My own code now
compiles with no errors, so I think that this is indeed the solution to the
problem.

Could you please update the Debian blitz++ package to use the sources from cvs,
so that it will work with gcc4, which I understand is now the default compiler.

Thanks,

Helen

[1] Sorry, but I've lost the log of them since I recompiled successfully just
now - I will try to regenerate the errors if you really need to see them, but
it'll require re-breaking stuff that I have spent all day working out how to
fix, so I prefer not to do that unless you need it

Bug#323747: kdelibs-data: upgrading from 4:3.3.2-6.1 to 4:3.4.2-1 broke kicker & konqueror & more

2005-08-18 Thread Helen Faulkner
Package: kdelibs-data
Version: 4:3.3.2-6.1
Severity: important

Hi,

I upgraded my version of kdelibs-data today, and when I rebooted, I found that a
number of things were broken:

- The k-menu had no application entries at all (I tried running update-menus and
kbuildsycoca to fix this, but that made no difference)

- The quicklauncher in kicker had lost it's buttons for the applications that I
usually have there.

- When I ran konqueror, the part on the left, which can show the directory
structure, the bookmarks, the services, etc, was gone.

- When I tried to "configure konqueror" from the settings menu nothing happened.

- When I tried to run kcontrol, I got the kcontrol window with nothing in it -
ie the background picture on the right was there, listing my kde version,
username etc. However, there were no entries listed on the left in any of the
tabs for index/search/help

I reckon that there were probably more things wrong than these that I didn't
happen to find.

Downgrading kdelibs-data to the previous version solved all of these problems.

Thanks,

Helen

Just to clarify, if anyone is still wondering. I upgraded 4:3.3.2-6.1 to
4:3.4.2-1 by literally running synaptic, updating the apt sources and telling
synaptic to upgrade everything that could be upgraded (I have forgotten the
direct apt-get command for that). I think this would be a fairly common thing
to do and as Adeodato has pointed out, I was allowed to upgrade to the "wrong"
version of kdelibs-data without realising it would cause problems. I suspect
there could be many other people in this situation, if others are in the habit
of assuming that if synaptic lets them upgrade something it will be ok to
upgrade it.

Thanks for replying to quickly to this :)

Helen

I have repackaged kfish, naming the correct author for the one

the other images with DFSG-free ones (from kaquarium).

The new version will be uploaded when my sponsor is able to do that.

Bug#292892: k3b has problems "Reading local song database"

2005-01-30 Thread Helen Faulkner
Package: k3b
Version: 0.11.19-1
Severity: normal
When I start k3b, it seems to get stuck for a long time while the
splash-screen says it is "Reading local song database". It used to
start in seconds, now it seems to get stuck at this point for several
minutes before continuing, using most of the CPU in the process.
As far as I know, there is no local song database. Certainly there is
nothing that should require that much processing. I'm not sure what k3b
is actually doing at this point. It is certainly annoying and I wonder
whether this is a slightly poorly designed feature or whether it could
be symptomatic of some larger problem.
Please let me know if I can provide any more information about this.
Thanks,
Helen.

Hi Kurt,
I just wanted to say thanks for the nice friendly bug report, with the
clear and helpful description of the problem with labplot.

I'm fixing it now, and the new version of labplot will be uploaded at my
sponsor's convenience, which should be soon. Hopefully that will solve
the problem.

Thanks again,

This problem has been resolved by discussion with the copyright owner of
the image files in question. The website that the images were
originally distributed from [1] now has a license statement for the
windows screensaver that the images are part of

I believe that this solves the problem, and that kaquarium and
shermans-aquarium can now be packaged in a DFSG way, given suitable
alterations to the copyright statements in those packages.

Bug#290666: ITP: kdoomsday - countdown timer panel applet for KDE

2005-01-15 Thread Helen Faulkner
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
* Package name: kdoomsday
  Version : 0.2
  Upstream Author : Helen Faulkner <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://alioth.debian.org/projects/kdoomsday/
* License : GPL
Description : countdown timer panel applet for KDE
kdoomsday is a KDE panel applet that counts the time down to or up from
a specified event.

I'm the author of kdoomsday. I wrote it because I wanted to count down
to an awaited event and, to my suprise, I couldn't find anything that
would sit in my KDE panel and do just that.

There are currently 1839 hours until I leave to go home, not that I am
counting or anything! ;)

Bug#294093: kweather - can't get ICAO location information from linking webpage

2005-02-07 Thread Helen Faulkner
Package: kweather
Version: 4:3.3.2-2
Severity: normal
Hi,
I ran kweather and it didn't have a weather location selected. So I
tried to configure it to look at the weather for Melbourne, Australia.
But I didn't know the ICAO location code. When I clicked on "Lookup
your ICAO Code" in the configure dialog, it took me to a webpage that
doesn't have ICAO codes for Australian cities (as far as I can tell, it
only has ICAO codes for US locations). So I didn't know how to tell
kweather to get Melbourne's weather.
I think that kweather should either link to somewhere that has worldwide
ICAO location information, or it should be able to use the WMO index
number that is provided by the website it links to.
One curious thing is that kweather can get Melbourne's weather through
the weather service page of the congfigure dialog anyway. Maybe the
ICAO codes are lurking in there somewhere already.

Thanks,
Helen :)

retitle 294093 kweather: please use easier website for ICAO codes

thanks mate :)
Hello,
Thanks Ben for pointing out that the website kweather links to does
contain the information I needed (the ICAO code for Melbourne).

I have now tried and failed twice to use that website to get that
information (it's not very clear at all which code is the ICAO code, or
that ICAO codes are not available for all locations). I suspect that
other users would also be confused by this, and give up on using
kweather, as a result. I did this a few months ago, and I was only
trying again today because someone else was asking me about it, and
having exactly the same problem with that website.

I think that it would be good if kweather could use a less confusing
website for finding international ICAO codes. I had a look, and found
the following possibilities:

http://www.airport-technology.com/icao-codes/
https://pilotweb.nas.faa.gov/qryhtml/icao/
I'm sure there would be other websites with the same information.
Thanks,
Helen.

Bug#294725: k3b hangs then crashes on startup

2005-02-11 Thread Helen Faulkner
Package: k3b
Version: 0.11.19-1
Severity: grave
Hello,
This might be related to Bug#292892, since the symptoms are similar, in
which case it is presumably not actually a k3b bug. But it's not
exactly the same so I figured I'd better report it here. I'm not sure
whether this one should be "grave" or "important", but it certainly
renders k3b entirely unusable to me, so I'm going for grave for now.
Sorry if I have gotten this wrong.

When I start k3b, I get the splash-screen, and it gets to "Reading Local
Song database". At this point it hangs, for several minutes, using most
of my processor time. Then it crashes.
Running k3b from the terminal produces the following output:
 helen:~> k3b
k3b: ERROR: (K3bCdDevice) Unable to do inquiry.
 KCrash: Application 'k3b' crashing...
 zsh: alarm k3b
That's all.
Please let me know if I can provide any more information about this
problem.
Thanks,
Helen.

Hi,
I have just realised that whatever k3b is doing when it crashes on
startup, it doesn't do that when I run it as root. So that's not as
bad, though clearly it isn't ideal either.

Sorry for the hassle of having a mistitled bug with the wrong severity
submitted at you.

Bug#294787: labplot: problem with functions plot

Hi,
Thankyou for the bug report.

When I try to plot a function (2D or 3D), i got this error :$

and the programm freezes. Impossible to quit it correctly.
I can't seem to reproduce this.
Can you please tell me what function you are trying to plot, and exactly
what you are doing to plot it?

Are you able to plot the default function of sin(x)?
To test this, start labplot and choose
plot -> new plot from function -> 2D function
don't change anything in that dialog, and click ok.
Do you get a plot of sin(x) ?
Thanks,
Helen,

Bug#294787: Could labplot handle parse errors in the function plotter more nicely?

2005-02-12 Thread Helen Faulkner
Hi Stephen,
How are things?
I've gotten a bug report
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=294787) from a Debian
Labplot user who is having trouble with unparseable functions entered
into the function dialog when plotting 2D and 3D functions.

I am wondering whether it would be possible to get Labplot to behave
more nicely when that situation arises (as it surely will). Maybe
labplot could do something like grab the output of whatever libary is
calculating the functions, realise that it is dealing with something the
library can't parse, throw a warning message dialog to the user, and
stop trying to parse the unparseable thing?

To see the behaviour the user is reporting, start labplot and try to
plot something like "sin(x)," The comma makes it unparseable, and when
Labplot has been run from the command line, all you get is many
repetitions of "ERROR : parse error". Labplot appears to hang - I
Ctrl-C'd it to kill it. I guess that it would not be obvious to some
users what is going on in that situation, especially if they haven't run
Labplot from the command line in the first place.

Anyway, it's nice to see that enough people are using the Debian
packages to generate some bug reports :)

I hope all is well with you,
Helen.

Bug#294787: labplot: problem with functions plot

2005-02-12 Thread Helen Faulkner
Hi again Guillame,
I can't plot the default function, that was what I tried, I also tried this
without success :
2+x, x^2, sin(x)
OK, I have now managed to reproduce this problem, I think. I only get
it in situations where I would expect labplot to produce parse errors,
because I am asking it to plot something it doesn't know how to handle.

For example, labplot cannot plot the following as entered into the
Function box in the "2D Function Dialog":
   2+x, x^2, sin(x)
Because it doesn't know how to handle the commas (",") in that entry.
So it produces parse errors.

Things that labplot can plot include the following, as entered
individually into that function dialog:
 sin(x)
 2+x
 x^2
 and lots of other things.

If you want to have those three plots on the same set of axes, you have
to enter them all in seperately. You cannot enter them in together,
separated by commas, which is what I think you might be doing.

If you have observed a situation where you are entering in a function to
plot that labplot should be able to parse, and it is not doing so, can
you please check it again, to be sure, and let me know about it.
(Please use the reply-to address in this email so that our discussion
continues to be logged by the Debian bug tracking system.) Please let
me know precisely what you have entered as the Function box in the
Function Dialog.

I do agree that labplot's handling of the situation when it has a parse
error entered is less than graceful. I will write to upstream to ask
for better handling of such situations.

Thanks,
Helen.

Bug#427468: mime-types / ksycoca broken after upgrade

2007-06-04 Thread Helen Faulkner

Package: kdebase
Version: 4:3.5.7-1
Severity: important

Hello wise kde people :)

I upgraded my system last night and when I first ran konqueror today it wouldn't
work properly, seeming to not know what to do with a perfectly normal location I
asked it to open.

Sorry, I don't have the error message it gave me written down, but it was
something that I understood to mean "I can't find my list of mime types so I
don't know what to do with this location /home/helen that you are asking me to
open".

Anyway, I figured something was wrong with kde in general, so I ran a couple of
things from konsole to see what it said. The output is below. Then, seeing the
errors about KSycoca, I ran "kbuildsycoca", which seems to have fixed the
problem (the last call of konqueror in my output below seems to have worked
fine). However I suspect that many users wouldn't know to try this, so would be
stuck with a "broken" konqueror, kwrite, and probably other kde stuff as well
(hence the "important" severity call).

There still seem to be problems with my system, see the errors in the output,
even after running kbuildsycoca.

Sending this bug to kdebase because I don't know which package it belongs to,
but I suspect something deep in the workings of kde.

Thanks

Helen

thanks mate!

Hi again,

Thanks for the quick response :)

I doubt that users would find that information file for kdelibs4c2a (in fact I
doubt that most users would even know that package to report such a bug against
- I certainly didn't).

I suggest that you put in a debconf interaction with the user that works as
follows when the relavant parts of kde are being upgraded.

1) If kde is running, warn the user that:
2) kde might need to be restarted, to avoid weird things happening, but
3) don't restart kde until you have finished updating your system (since the
process updating the system might be part of kde, and we don't want to interrupt
that).

I think this would inform the users about the need to restart kde after an
upgrade much more effectively, since they would have to acknowledge the warning
as part of the install process.

Cheers,

Helen

Anyway, I figured something was wrong with kde in general, so I ran a
couple of things from konsole to see what it said. The output is below.
Then, seeing the errors about KSycoca, I ran "kbuildsycoca", which seems to

have fixed the problem (the last call of konqueror in my output below seems
to have worked fine).

Occasionally kde bumps its internal database version and format. A rerunning
of kbuildsycoca rebuilds its database with the new format.
kbuildsycoca is also run when you log in, so we generally just advice people
to log out and back in.

However I suspect that many users wouldn't know to
try this, so would be stuck with a "broken" konqueror, kwrite, and probably

other kde stuff as well (hence the "important" severity call).

We are trying to just educate the users to know that after a kde upgrade, it
is normally required to restart kde.

We can't just restart peoples kde in postinst, so people will have to do it
themselves.

There still seem to be problems with my system, see the errors in the
output, even after running kbuildsycoca.

it is quite normal to have lots of konsole output running kde applications.

Sending this bug to kdebase because I don't know which package it belongs
to, but I suspect something deep in the workings of kde.

it is in kdelibs4c2a stuff has changed.

There is already a file in place that tells bugreporters against kdelibs4c2a
the following:

| Reporting bugs for KDE packages
| ---
|
| KDE does not support beeing upgraded while running. If you do so, you may
| encounter weird bugs (empty menus or configuration dialogs e.g.), and even
| crashes.
|
| If you recently upgraded kdelibs and/or kdebase packages, please consider:
| * exiting your current KDE session.
| * ensuring that no more KDE process is still running, especially the
|processes named (list beeing non-limitative): dcopserver, kded,
|ksmserver...
| * log in KDE again.

|
| Then try to reproduce you bug. If it's not reproducible, then please do not
| report it.

As we can't do anything else than inform our users, I am marking this bug as
done.

/Sune
