Bug#374611: Upgrades from Linux 2.4 might break boot when hda becomes sda

2006-06-20 Thread Robert Millan [ackstorm]
Package: initramfs-tools
Severity: normal

Upgrading from kernel-image-2.4.27-3-686 to linux-image-2.6.15-1-686 might
break boot if /dev/hdb becomes /dev/sda. As fstab and menu.lst aren't changed,
boot will hang when trying to mount root fs.

Is there any way in which initrd could handle this? Or at least gracefuly
report that the root param is wrong (currently it just hangs on Waiting for
root device).

Don't know if that is possible, but the issue is at least already
documented in the Release Notes.

Uhm I see. Note that this isn't necessarily related with release upgrades,
though. One could want to switch from 2.4 to 2.6 either in sarge or etch
(although we probably aren't going to bother about sarge atm).

it's on my todo list to provide a better feedback in those cases.
they will reproduce them selve once postetch ide switches to pata.

although it's not as trivial as it sounds.
