Bug#471442: please document how to enable compositing in metacity 2.22

A couple of possible enhancements: - Version 2.x = Since version 2.x - customizable - gconftool = gconftool-2 Committed with your suggestions. I had to add it to DEB_INSTALL_DOCS_metacity in debian/rules for it to be added to the metacity package. This means it will also be added for libmetacity0 (as it's the first package listed in control). I'm not sure if there's an easy way around this, besides changing the order of the packages in the control file? (In the past, it would have been a problem to move the packages around as the shlibs of libmetacity are needed when computing de shlibdeps of metacity; even if this works nowadays, I'd rather not change the order.) DEB_INSTALL_DOCS_metacity will we called as dh_installdocs -pmetacity, so the first package is going to be metacity I think; if you set DEB_INSTALL_DOCS_metacity as your propose, the doc ends up in metacity or libmetacity? I'd guess it works as expected, even if the behavior of dh_installdocs is not as predictable on multiple packages as the other dh_*. -- Loïc Minier

Hi, I'm attaching a first try at documenting this in README.Debian. Any improvements or suggestions are welcome. I don't know if we need to go into greater detail on how to enable the composite extension, I think it's loaded by default now? It might also be a good idea to mention using EXA instead of XAA as it can make a huge difference in performance. -- Cheers, Sven Arvidsson http://www.whiz.se PGP Key ID 760BDD22 Metacity Compositor === Version 2.22 of Metacity includes a simple compositor. It's only intended to add a set of non-customisable simple effects. Currently these include a drop-shadow around windows, and thumbnail previews in the window switcher dialog. Contrary to Compiz, the Metacity compositor uses the XRender extension to draw to the screen. This means that no 3D acceleration is needed. This should in theory make it suitable to run on a larger selection of hardware, but only if your video driver implements sufficient Render performance. The compositor can be enabled on the fly by setting the gconf key /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager to true by using gconf-editor or gconftool. Before enabling the compositor, you need to make sure your X server configuration has the composite extension loaded and enabled. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
