I think I understood the problem. Basically the ISOs now doesn't include the
stable symlink they used to have (being it stable or not). Now they provide
the symlink that reflects the suite they are: testing - wheezy in this
 case.

I fixed iso-scan to handle it (but couldn't test it locally); please check
if tomorrow's daily works for you.

The hd-media installer from 20110728 is working without problems now

Thank you

I used this hd-media kernel and initrd:

http://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/amd64/20110726-00:16/hd-media/vmlinuz
http://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/amd64/20110726-00:16/hd-media/initrd.gz

and this iso:

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/20110726-3/amd64/iso-cd/debian-testing-amd64-businesscard.iso

put them on an usb stick and boot the kernel and the initrd with grub
without passing any kernel parameters. isolinux have not been used for
startup

There is one now, in unstable. You can check this with the latest
 daily builds of D-I.

Right. But the error occurs after choosing one iso. More details are on
 the attached screen shot

thank you very much for following up on this report.

I do not know if you know this already, but to keep the threading
working although you have not received the original messages you can do
the following.

$ bts show --mbox 629146 # downloads the mbox file with all messages

`bts` is packaged in `devscripts` and you can import the downloaded mbox
file saved in `~/.devscripts/bts/` in your mail program like Iceweasel.

--snip--

After putting this stuff on an usb stick and booting the kernel with
grub whithout passing any kernel parameters the error occured during the
 installation.

I have searched in the unpacked initrd for the word stable and found in
 the file
 usr/lib/debian-installer/retriever/cdrom-retriever
 the lines
   # Not really nice defaulting codename to a suite...
   codename=stable
 Changing the second line to
   codename=testing
 solved the problem.

 Maybe this information helps

It certainly does help! Maybe there should be a menu displayed to
select the suite, or even better, **select the ISO**
