Bug#594512: debian-faq: aptitude advantage is not correct any more

2010-08-26 Thread Osamu Aoki
Package: debian-faq
Version: 4.0.4+nmu1
Severity: important

New apt is as good as aptitude in many respect. So I think following
needs updates.
  http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-faq/ch-pkgtools.en.html#s-aptitude

Please read thread:
  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=411280

As I recently checked, hold in aptitude is the same as one offered by
dpkg. So completely compatible and equivalent these das.

My summary of package comparison is at:

Thank you for testing and reporting it upstream. I added the meta data
to the BTS – I hope the pseudo header gets evaluated – and added the
Debian Bug to the upstream ticket.

Bug#594514: signature separation anxiety --

2010-08-26 Thread Barak A. Pearlmutter
Package: emacs23
Version: 23.2+1-4
Severity: wishlist

Before 23.2, Emacs would insert my default signature at the end of my
outgoing messages due to this .emacs line.

  (setq mail-signature "\n\n\t\t\t\t\t--Barak.\n")

Some change in 23.2 made it as if I'd written this instead

  (setq mail-signature "\n-- \n\n\t\t\t\t\t--Barak.\n")

This is documented in the info,

  File: emacs, Node: Mail Signature
  35.5 Mail Signature
  ...
By convention, a mail signature should be marked by a line whose
contents are `-- '. If your signature lacks this prefix, it is added
for you. The remainder of your signature should be no more than four
  lines.

Okay, whether whitespace at the end of an otherwise non-empty line in a
textual document should have semantic significance is a matter of, how
can I put it gently ... taste. But, I sure wish there were a way of
easily disabling this end-of-line-whitespace adding "feature".

I would suggest documenting it as follows:

Those with any taste will recoil in horror at giving semantic
significance to trailing whitespace, and can disable the insertion of
the above separator by setting the global variable

do-things-to-make-those-with-taste-or-sense-recoil-in-horror

  to nil.

Thanks for maintaining emacs, and it's great that 23.2 made it into
testing.

please do not confuse people:-) it is completely unrelated problem,
lvm cvs fix is just code cleanup, fixed error is very uncommon.

Reported problem is
File descriptor 5 (/tmp/tmpfYDdkby (deleted)) leaked on lvdisplay
   invocation. Parent PID 3291: /bin/sh

It means, that application running lvdisplay did not close file descriptor
before running lvm. See "man lvm"

"On invocation, lvm requires that only the standard file descriptors
stdin, stdout and stderr are available. If others are found, they get
closed and messages are issued warning about the leak."

this is surely not bug in lvm but in cron or whatever forks lvm process..

Leaked descriptor can be security problem in theory, lvm closes
all such leaked descriptors on start and just screams here.
You should get similar warning on SElinux enabled systems.

Also read http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=466138#15

If it it not badly written cron job, it is probably bug in cron then.

Is it wav2swf instead of wave2swf, isn't it? It is a part of swftools

No! We need to include and use wav files and then remove the swf files.
The easier alternative is remove the swf files and no longer play
sounds. =/

Bug#583363: linux-image-2.6.32-3-686: Network hangs with network activity and date freezes

2010-08-26 Thread Jose Luis Salas Carrascosa
I think that the bug is caused by changes in the clocksource between kernels
and the powernow-k8 module.

One time I tested booting the xen flavour of the linux kernel ( the
2.6.32-5-xen-686 ) and the problem dissapeared, the net worked at full speed
but there was no cpu scaling.

Now, I boot the kernel with the clocksource=jiffies option and the
powersaved daemon to do the frequency scaling, the net works al full speed
and the notebook is less hot, and me happier.

Thanks.

Hi,

it would be nice if one could more dynamically adjust the mail adress standard
out and err are sent to. I've attached a little patch that gives the MAILTO
environment variable preference to all other name sources.

I don't know if I had better included an extra commandline option for that
purpose, but this way it's simpler and perhaps there are some scripts which
make use of this variable anyway (as in crontab, but perhaps it is overkill to
use at and cron together [-; ) and it better fits in the way at receives its
mailnames (LOGNAME, utmp).

Bug#594461: apt-setup: Should propose using t-p-u when testing is installed

2010-08-26 Thread Joey Hess
Does it really make sense for users to use t-p-u? Anything can be
uploaded there, rejected by the release team, and no upgrade path is
necessarily provided for a system that installed a package from there
and ends up tracking stable.

Bug#591881: vlc-nox: package fails to upgrade properly from lenny

2010-08-26 Thread David Kalnischkies
2010/8/26 Reinhard Tartler :
> I'm still waiting for an answer on this question. Is this issue solved
> with the latest upload, or do you prefer me to upload the patch posted
> above?

Sorry, should have sent that to the bug itself, too…
(we discussed that a bit on irc last week i think)

It would be nice if you could fix it in your package
(which at least feels a bit cleaner anyway: liba2 breaks liba1
sounds saner than libpartlyunrelated breaks liba1).

The thing is, fixing it for APT is a bit more complicated than it looks:
The patch changes a line which is old. And if i say old than i mean
that this one-line patch circumvents the score-consideration introduced
in rev. 8 of the source. Call me nostalgic, but i am pretty sure that
changing code which is from 1998 and survived until now shouldn't
be changed to upgrade one package shortly before a release if
it can be worked-around easily…
(okay, the breaks are newer - they are from 2006…)

Not because this couldn't be an old bug, but because changing it
now without in-deep testing will very likely break something else.
(scoring is an important concept in the resolver, so my personal guess
is that we can safely place bets on the possibility that it will break…)

We can consider this after squeeze then we have ~2 years of
testing before shipping it…

Best regards

David Kalnischkies

Bug#549451: evolution: problem when upgrading from lenny

2010-08-26 Thread Mazoit Frédéric
Package: evolution
Version: 2.30.2-1
Severity: normal

I do not use fetchmail. I only use evolution with imap boxes.

Today, I made a test upgrade from a lenny box and because
network-manager chaged its behaviour and no longer manages
wired links by default, evolution suddenly refused to connect
to my imap boxes.

Network-manager knows that it does not manages all the
internet links but evolution apparently thinks that it does.

I would like to be able to at least force evolution not to
trust network-manager.

Bug#594459: xserver-xorg-video-intel: X freezes after logging out of KDE [945G]

Hi Joe,

Joe Neal (26/08/2010):

can you still ping the machine? If so, fetching kernel and X logs
through ssh, and attaching them here would be very welcome.

Bug#594520: linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64: Module snd_pcsp should not be loaded

2010-08-26 Thread Salvo Tomaselli
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-21
Severity: normal

It is my opinion that the module snd_pcsp should not be loaded on my machine,
mainly because my machine doesn't have a pc speaker.

The second problem is that it becomes the default audio device and the result
is that all the softwares use that audio device by default, and so i can't hear
anything.

This is not a proper signature, see mail-signature's docstring.

It is also a long-outstanding Usenet convention and documented in RFC
3676¹, thus not just a matter of taste.

If you're using message-mode (the default mail composition mode in Emacs
23.2), you can play around with the message-signature-separator variable.

True, I forgot about overload here. I updated the patch accordingly and
also amended the test as well.

The patch is now also forwarded upstream [2] (very slightly modified to
apply to Date::Calc::XS).

Well, we should bind step() then (if it does what you think it does). It
may also be possible to implement a caching layer for source records in
APT or python-apt.

I am downgrading the bugs to wishlist now, as this is a feature addition
and somewhat hard to achieve.

There won't be a lenny'n'half, but we do backport driver updates to
2.6.26 as needed. We've already done this for the 82574.

Not quite so.
Systems that have been badly damaged by this bug can be easily detected
and, in that case, xdg-user-dirs can be made to continue to damage them.
Instructions can be written for the user to put the system right so that
xdg-user-dirs can do the right thing.

I'm getting mad, or is it not me.
I understood that Ubuntu has just sent me "upstream to Debian".
And yourself don't tell me where that is.

I thought that Open Software wanted to be helped but I must conclude
they do not.

swfdec has been removed from Debian, alternative subsystem works fine and
there's no feedback since one year ago. Closing.
If needed reopen it or file a new one.

Bug#594495: apt: obsolete references to non-us still present in documentation

> It makes no sense to keep non-us stuff four years after security updates for

It makes no sense, but it at least doesn't have "a major effect on the
usability of a package, without rendering it completely unusable to everyone",
which is the definition for important.

It appears two times in the manpage btw, second time with the note that non-us
doesn't work this way any longer but that it serves as an example - and
that is what all these paragraphs are: an example.
The manpage also mentions m68k architecture in this paragraph…
its not an official architecture since etch…

Fixing it now properly means to update the example resulting in fuzzying it.
I don't think it is worthed the hassle on its own as it doesn't hurt anyone…

Noted on the lists:
- someone should have found that earlier if more people would look
- if we break the translations anyway (unlikely)
- fix after squeeze release

Best regards

David Kalnischkies

Hmmm... I do not know what you mean with "overexaggerate". However, it
might be that that was organized together. But as it is at least broken
in some cases shows that not all cases are addressed.

My time is just limited. I fill good bug reports if I am able to do. If
not or if I think the problem is more general then I just fill all
informations I have as I did in that report.

If it is not enough, then just ask politely. With that hate and FUD I
read in the last mails I am not willing to help making debian better at
all.

Concerning other bugs I heared of people who have same problems but was
not willing anymore to write any word with some debian maintainers as
the was also scared of with FUD and hate mails.

I myself did some consequences and fixed some bugs myself without giving
back the patches to the debian community. I do not want to do that with
all bugs as I still think debian maintainer did a nice job. But with
such answers like in that bug report ...

Bug#587887: linux-base: please suppress useless debconf messages on first install

2010-08-26 Thread Holger Levsen
Hi,

On Samstag, 3. Juli 2010, Bastian Blank wrote:
> Well, then its easy: don't create this useless entry.

ok, I'm now using a post-base-installer hook in d-i to remove the cdrom entry
from /etc/fstab and voila, an inserted CDROM still pops up in KDE, yay.

But I still wonder why this linux-base postinst bothers about fstab entries
for /media/cdrom and /media/floppy at all. Those will never work with
UUIDs :)

Hi Micha,

I just downloaded & installed it from your repository and it's working quite
nicely (both gnucash & the last iceweasel in backports)

I agree. However, maybe giving a realistic example (or a more abstract one, but
not a deprecated one) would prove more logical / useful.

bug reports hinted at the brasero-cdrkit. Installing that package fixed
the problem, and now burning audio CD's works again.

Bug#287795: Patch to copy ssl certs in init.d script

2010-08-26 Thread martin f krafft
Let me suggest the attached patch instead, since it covers more use
cases. The basics are simple:

- We no longer check for smtp_use_tls and friends, since they are
  deprecated.

- Instead, if smtp_tls_CApath is specified, it replaces its distant
  cousin in the queue directory.

- If smtp_tls_CAfile is specified, it is copied to the same location
  within the chroot. Otherwise, the
  /etc/ssl/certs/ca_certificates.crt bundle is installed.

Please apply this (or a previous) patch, Lamont.

It may complain about an ATAPI floppy, but not one handled by a platform
floppy driver. As for /media/cdrom, its device should be specified as
/dev/cdrom or similar.

Bug#524135: Maintenance

2010-08-26 Thread Eric Evans
[ Roger Meier ]
> From my perspective, the easiest way to maintain debian packaging

>
> Issues can easily be addressed via JIRA and Packages can be made
> available on the Thrift website directly as long as they are not
> within official Debian releases.
>
> What are your thought's?

There are so many reasons this is not a good idea; I'm not really sure
where to begin.

For starters, I don't have access to Thrift's subversion repository and
patch submission would seriously inhibit my worflow. Likewise other
Debian Developers don't have access to Thrift's repo, while they do have
access to the collab-maint repo on git.debian.org. It's one thing to
impede my work, but impeding the work of others in the Debian community
means I will likely not get their help.

Even if access weren't a problem, colocating the packaging source in the
same VCS is still not an option because Debian package releases do not,
and should not occur in lockstep with Thrift releases.

Secondly, this bug report is for including Thrift in Debian. It's best
to think of this as more of an aggregate work created from the upstream
Apache project. Debian users are going to submit bugs to the Debian BTS
not JIRA, some of these will no doubt pertain to Thrift itself, but many
of them will pertain to the packaging and integration in Debian, and
have nothing to do with Thrift.

Bug#594490: debian-reference: aptitude is recommended but apt-get is used throughout the document

2010-08-26 Thread Sergiy Kolesnikov

Hi Osamu,

Osamu Aoki написав(ла):
the reference in lenny (v 2.24) states: "Although it is now safe to mix different
package tools on the Debian system, it is best to continue using aptitude as
much as possible."

Please note Release note is going through similar changes.

I use apt-get for installation related and global upgrade related
situation for ROBUSTNESS.

I use aptitude daily.

I really mean "as much as possible." When it is required, use apt-get!

I use aptitude daily, just like you. As long as the Reference used
aptitude in the most examples I had no questions. But the sentence I
cited above is missing in the current version of the Reference and the
most examples are now using apt-get. Besides, I remember that one was
told not to mix aptitude and apt-get. These are the things which
confused me. I believe that just putting the cited sentence back to the
Reference could prevent such a confusion.

The questions about mixing aptitude and apt-get and about aptitude vs.
apt-get come up over and over again:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2010/08/msg01387.html
Mentioning in the Debian Reference (in the Chapter 2.2.1 for example)
that apt-get has improved a lot, that aptitude is not the recommended
package management tool any more, that one can mix both tools (most of
the time) safely and referencing the discussion

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=411280
would be really helpful.

Thank you!

Bug#448639: rubygems and FHS compliance in Debian and Ubuntu

2010-08-26 Thread Clint Byrum
ABSTRACT

This proposal seeks to clarify the current state of the rubygems package
in Debian and Ubuntu, and provide a clear path toward full FHS compliance
and usability for users.

CURRENT STATUS

Rubygems is a tool used by ruby users to download and install ruby
modules in much the same way CPAN works for Perl, and pypi/easy_install
works for python. A developer may create a "gem" that encompasses their
software module, and publish it into the rubygems repository. Ruby users
have grown to use this as their primary source of software modules,
and as such, it is so important that it is now included with Ruby 1.9,
the latest stable release of Ruby.

One component of these modules is executable scripts. These scripts are
provided to users to perform essential functions related to whatever
module they are packaged with, or sometimes the script itself is the
entire point of the module, as is the case with the 'rails' gem, which
installs a web framework and application server. Rubygems actually
generates the files that go in to its "bindir" so that they are pointed
at the desired ruby binary.

In the upstream default install of rubygems, the default location for
these binaries and rubygems library files is /usr/bin, and /usr/lib
respectively. This places the binaries in the default shell path for most
FHS systems, so that users can have an experience something like this:

$ sudo gem install rails [... gem downloads and installs rails ... ]
$ rails my-facebook-killer-app/ [... A skeleton of a rails app is
created ... ... I Start hacking on my-facebook-killer-app ...]

A few years ago, these two bugs were filed, and fixed, in Debian:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=480250
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=458987

These were fixed by having rubygems change its default path, to
/var/lib/gems/$ruby_version

This definitely address the users' issue, which was basically "I don't
want the rubygems package manager to be able to easily conflict with
the debian package manager."

However, this introduced an incompatibility with the FHS definition of
the purpose of /var[1].

"/var contains variable data files. This includes spool directories and
files, administrative and logging data, and transient and temporary files.

Some portions of /var are not shareable between different systems. For
instance, /var/log, /var/lock, and /var/run. Other portions may be shared,
notably /var/mail, /var/cache/man, /var/cache/fonts, and /var/spool/news.

/var is specified here in order to make it possible to mount /usr
read-only. Everything that once went into /usr that is written to during
system operation (as opposed to installation and software maintenance)
must be in /var."

And further, the purpose of /var/lib

"This hierarchy holds state information pertaining to an application or
the system. State information is data that programs modify while they
run, and that pertains to one specific host. Users must never need to
modify files in /var/lib to configure a package's operation.

State information is generally used to preserve the condition of an
application (or a group of inter-related applications) between invocations
and between different instances of the same application. State information
should generally remain valid after a reboot, should not be logging
output, and should not be spooled data."

While the terms used are certainly open to interpretation, its difficult
to argue that executable scripts and libraries constitute "state
information that programs modify while they run and that pertains to
one specific host".

This potential issue with FHS compliance means rubygems may be in
violation of Section 9.1 of the debian policy manual:

http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-opersys.html#s9.1

Whats more, users do not expect to find executable scripts in /var. The
default path on current Debian systems is as follows:

/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games

and on Ubuntu:

/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games

Adding entries to the path is a non-trivial activity that most users
won't do in a way that makes their system maintainable or flexible over
a long period of time.

PROPOSED SOLUTION

Rubygems in Debian and Ubuntu should place gems in /usr/local/lib/gems
and gem executables in /usr/local/bin.

FHS defines the purpose of /usr/local as such:

"The /usr/local hierarchy is for use by the system administrator when
installing software locally. It needs to be safe from being overwritten
when the system software is updated. It may be used for programs and
data that are shareable amongst a group of hosts, but not found in /usr.

Locally installed software must be placed within /usr/local rather than
/usr unless it is being installed to replace or upgrade software in /usr."

Placing installed gems in /usr/local/lib/gems and /usr/local/bin, would
allow rubygems to maintain FHS compliance, and avoid the problem of
users accidentally overwriting dpk

Bug#583219: NMU: Adding missing dependencies, fixing wrong path in vendors/railties symlink (generator)

2010-08-26 Thread Gunnar Wolf
Hi,

I am uploading a NMU fixing the two referenced bugs. I am also pushing
the patches to the package's git repository (although I was not able
to build from it with git-buildpackage, as the master branch is
disconnected from the head with the actual releases, and the debian
branch does not even exist).

Given that we are in a freeze period and this addresses a somewhat
dated RC bug (and that there was an offer some months ago by Adam for
other pkg-ruby-extras maintainers to step in and comaintain, but I
haven't grasped the git repository layout and prefer not to
self-appoint as comaintainer until I do ;-) ), I am uploading straight
to unstable (and requesting a freeze exception) instead of going
through the DELAYED queue.

The previous post shows that a *must* directive is being violated.

Bug#594528: munin: basic README instructions on how to use missing

2010-08-26 Thread Olivier Berger
Package: munin
Version: 1.4.5-1
Severity: minor

Hi.

Upon installing munin, a user is left without much clue on what to do next,
i.e. where/how to use it, and how to configure.

Unfortunately README.Debian fails to instruct basic such tips like looking for
http://localhost/munin/ ... and who cares (from user POV) that you used such
package generation system or the other...

Please add a few more hints on where to find more docs at least, in the
/usr/share/doc/munin/README.Debian.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Bah, yeah sorry, meant that one.

Well, apt is not only being used on Debian systems, and doing the right
thing here (portability-wise) does not require much effort anyway. As
said, if using AC_SYS_LARGEFILE is deemed too dangerious at this point
in time then defining _FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 and fixing the casts is the
only thing needed to make the code always DTRT, even if the system
does not have LFS.

The unsigned() cast will truncate the 64 bit value, which will make
the program fail whenever the lower bits are < than the needed size.

Unfortunately man tesseract instructs that :

imagename must be a TIF image with a .tif extension.

It's really too bad it can't be smarter at reporting an unknown format, but I
think there's no bug here.

Btw, this is very similar to 551190 so may be merged IMHO.

Hope this helps.

Ubiquity is a Firefox add-on that lets you give commands to Firefox by entering
command words into a special input box.

It would be cool to have it packaged for iceweasel. Maybe the package name
should be changed something like xul-ext-ubiquity ? There appears to be a
ubiquity package in Ubuntu, I think, so the name clash would be bad anyway.

Bug#503646: Any progress on OpenID 2.0 with gracie

2010-08-26 Thread Joachim Breitner
Dear Ben,

I’m trying to make use of gracie, but using it with my photo album:
http://www.joachim-breitner.de/bilder/login.html (which uses
libmod-auth-openid) fails. Entering my openID does forward my to gracie
and lets me log in, but then I see an error page saying:

The server encountered an error trying to serve the request. The message
was:

http://nomeata.de:8000/id/m...@joachim-breitner.de'
im:False tr:'http://www.joachim-breitner.de'
ah:'{HMAC-SHA256}{4c76b2c8}{nQSupA==}'> should be constructed with
op_endpoint to respond to OpenID 2.0 messages.

Are you still working on gracie and do you plan to enable OpenID
authentication?

And while I am at it: I use libpam-pwdfile to authenticate gracie
against my dovecot-passwdfile, not against the system user database.
This means that getpwnam fails. I worked around the problem using this
patch:

If you could integrate (configurably) such a feature, that would be

Bug#443474: implemented in debian - upstream too?

2010-08-26 Thread Mark Hedges

Some wonderful person snuck this feature in even though the
upstream bug was closed WONTFIX.

Was the 'new game' button on the 'no moves left' dialog
implemented upstream, or was that a Debian patch?

Mark

Bug#594532: duplicity: Copyright file doesn't mention GnuPGInterface.py which is under LGPL

2010-08-26 Thread Olivier Berger
Package: duplicity
Version: 0.6.08b-1.2
Severity: minor

duplicity includes a modified version of GnuPGInterface.py which is released
under LGPL, so I believe the copyright file misses it.

Btw, it may be interesting not to ship a modified version of that python lib,
but instead depend on python-gnupginterface, which would then need to be
enhanced maybe.
This may need to be discussed with upstream in any case.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

It seems to me that apt-get install mantis is all you need to do to have
it with the default DB setup including the default mantis administrator
account's password, resulting of upstream choices.

More in http://www.mantisbt.org/manual/manual.installation.php

Hope this answers your questions.

Laurent and Pavel,

it seems according to https://trac.ipsec-tools.net/ticket/329 that
this might really have been solved in a more recent version.

I'm going to close this bug then soon but it would be nice to get a
positive response from you Pavel.

Cheers

Stefan

Bug#574521: support automatic installation on software raid1

[Holger Levsen]

If someone can come up with ideas on how to detect two identical disks
within d-i, and how to preseed d-i/partman to set up software raid,
the rest should be small matter of programming in
debian-edu-profile. :)

Perhaps /proc/partitions can be used to detect identical disks?

Happy hacking,
