Bug#630445: gnome-settings-daemon: produces a lot of GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitor-WARNING, sends tons of messages to dbus which eat CPU
Package: gnome-settings-daemon Version: 2.30.2-3 Severity: serious After login to Gnome I see the CPU load over 40% (4-core i3 intel) produced by dbus. Trying to find a reason for that I found .xsession-errors growing very fast to megabytes with the repeated messages inside: .xsession-errors (gnome-settings-daemon:2873): GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitor-WARNING **: invoking List() failed for type GProxyVolumeMonitorGdu: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus) (gnome-settings-daemon:2873): GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitor-WARNING **: New owner :1.21 for volume monitor org.gtk.Private.GduVolumeMonitor connected to the bus; seeding drives/volumes/mounts ... KBackup uses KTar class for writing tar files and that class have broken UTF-8 support, it seems. First, tar archives have to use longlink trick to store names longer than 100 bytes. KTar class has functions implementing longlink, but they check name length in _characters_, not in bytes. For non-ASCII characters in UTF-8 length of string in bytes and length in characters do not match. In my case file had character-length less than 100 and byte-length greater than 100, so name simply truncated. Such behavior can be observed on non-ASCII UTF-8 or any other multibyte encoding. If file name is very long, resulting .tar may become unreadable. Second, calculation of 'chksum' field of tar header also broken: 'buffer' array defined as char, a signed number, while in tar sources chksum obtained as sum of unsigned values (actually there is the trick for (unsigned char) emulate, converting to integer and then logical and with 0xFF). May be bad checksum was reason for unreadable .tar. In the following patch you'll find a fix for this bug. diff -ru kde4libs-4.4.5.orig/kio/kio/ktar.cpp kde4libs-4.4.5/kio/kio/ktar.cpp --- kde4libs-4.4.5.orig/kio/kio/ktar.cpp2010-02-26 21:30:10.0 +0300 +++ kde4libs-4.4.5/kio/kio/ktar.cpp 2011-02-09 17:43:33.084041001 +0300 @@ -661,7 +661,7 @@ // Header check sum int check = 32; for( uint j = 0; j 0x200; ++j ) -check += buffer[j]; +check += (unsigned char)buffer[j]; s = QByteArray::number( check, 8 ); // octal s = s.rightJustified( 6, '0' ); memcpy( buffer + 0x94, s.constData(), 6 ); @@ -733,7 +733,7 @@ const QByteArray gname = group.toLocal8Bit(); // If more than 100 chars, we need to use the LongLink trick -if ( fileName.length() 99 ) +if ( encodedFileName.length() 99 ) d-writeLonglink(buffer,encodedFileName,'L',uname,gname); // Write (potentially truncated) name @@ -786,7 +786,7 @@ QByteArray gname = group.toLocal8Bit(); // If more than 100 chars, we need to use the LongLink trick -if ( dirName.length() 99 ) +if ( encodedDirname.length() 99 ) d-writeLonglink(buffer,encodedDirname,'L',uname,gname); // Write (potentially truncated) name @@ -838,9 +838,9 @@ QByteArray gname = group.toLocal8Bit(); // If more than 100 chars, we need to use the LongLink trick -if (target.length() 99) +if (encodedTarget.length() 99) d-writeLonglink(buffer,encodedTarget,'K',uname,gname); -if ( fileName.length() 99 ) +if ( encodedFileName.length() 99 ) d-writeLonglink(buffer,encodedFileName,'L',uname,gname); // Write (potentially truncated) name -- System Information: Debian Release: 6.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.37-rc5 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=ru_RU.utf8, LC_CTYPE=ru_RU.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages libkio5 depends on: ii libacl1 2.2.49-4 Access control list shared library ii libattr11:2.4.44-2 Extended attribute shared library ii libc6 2.11.2-10Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libgamin0 [libfam0] 0.1.10-2+b1 Client library for the gamin file ii libgcc1 1:4.4.5-8GCC support library ii libkdecore5 4:4.4.5-3.1 the KDE Platform Core Library ii libkdeui5 4:4.4.5-3.1 the KDE Platform User Interface Li ii libqt4-dbus 4:4.6.3-4Qt 4 D-Bus module ii libqt4-network 4:4.6.3-4Qt 4 network module ii libqt4-svg 4:4.6.3-4Qt 4 SVG module ii libqt4-xml 4:4.6.3-4Qt 4 XML module ii libqtcore4 4:4.6.3-4Qt 4 core module ii libqtgui4 4:4.6.3-4Qt 4 GUI module ii libsolid4

Hi, I can confirm that the 4.2-build2004 version of oss4 is working fine for me, and I've been using it for a few months now, but that's the version I've packaged myself, not the one on your SVN... However, I only updated the orig.tar.gz to the new upstream version and the patches files so that they apply on it (the biggest change was in os_cmd.patch where an additional line was introduced -- see the patch file I've provided -- as the other patches apply with a few line offsets). So if you just did the same, there shouldn't be any differences. Bug#629589: segfault gone, but problems remain
I think we can chock this up to operator error due to flaky DNS - why it worked ~25% of the time is a mystery... krb is pretty sensitive to forward, reverse, and canonical host names. Thanks... looks like 'tis time to update more machines now :) Just to clarify - you consider this bug to be closed and the failure was most probably caused by DNS (which could be checked by putting hostname to /etc/hosts). BTW... Rick, I am still waiting for sendmail to move to Berkeley DB 5.1, so we can finish the transition to db5.1 O. -- Ondřej Surý ond...@sury.org -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#630424: Maybe a Problem with tip22
Hi, The screen shot in Attilio's bug report was done by me on my Indy. I am not experienced in this beginning of the universe kind of code. But I found the following clues which may be useful. Please refer to bug 452798 (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=452798). Here is message #15 from Guido: On Sun, Nov 25, 2007 at 01:02:25PM +0100, Martin Michlmayr wrote: How much work is 64 bit support? It's not the 64bit support, things are simply not fitting into the memory segment we use anymore: Tip22 finds this memory map on my Indy: 1) Free Memory(3) segment found at (0x88002000,0x8874) 2) Free Memory(3) segment found at (0x8880,0x89002000) 3) Free Memory(3) segment found at (0x896f2000,0x9400) (1) is where the running kernel + initrd goes. (2) is where we tell the prom to download the tftpboot image to and (3) is lots of free space. The 64bit kernel (7MB) is just so much bigger than the 32bit one. Attached is a hack to get things booting again (so installer testing can proceed). It puts the tftp boot file into (3) and the initrd into (2) - it succesfully boots a kernel with an initramfs on my R5K Indy. I'll have to change some of the reservation code so we don't waste so much ram before I can fix this for real though. Bug#630320: obus: FTBFS on several architectures: can't find Dynlink
clone 630320 -1 reassign -1 libfindlib-ocaml 1.2.6+debian-1 retitle -1 camlp4 depends on Dynlink on all architectures severity -1 important tag -1 patch retitle 630320 FTBFS on ocaml native arches without native dynlink tag 630320 pending thanks Hi, Thanks for your report. There are indeed two separate issues, one for armel, and one for the other architectures. The armel issue is an obus issue: configure detects that armel is a native architecture and therefore builds native files. However, as camlp4 depends on dynlink, and armel doesn't have native dynlink, it fails to build. Forcing a non-native build on architectures without natdynlink fixes the issue. For the other arches, the problem is that camlp4 now unconditionnally depends on Dynlink, whether the architecture have natdynlink or not. This change (which I couldn't trace, but surely is an ocaml upstream change) wasn't reflected in the METAS/META.camlp4 file, and now camlp4.lib fails to link on non-natdynlink architectures. The default dstat output is good enough to report us on the system state was during starvation. Hello, yesterday and tonight I performed some other tests, these are the results: 1) it seems I am not able to reproduce the bug on a test system the test system (san01) has the same processor (E5220) and amount of RAM 12 GB, but a smaller I/O system: an 8 channel 3ware controller with an 8 disks raid 5 array the system that presents the problem (san00) has a 24 channel controller and a 23 disks raid 6 array (+ 1 hot spare) both systems are connected through the same gigabit switches Is the OS/kernel also the same? there is another hw difference between the two environment: the nodes connected to san00 are high end hw, their network card is able to generate nearly 1 Gb/s of iscsi traffic the nodes connected to san01 are low end hw and their network card does not exceed 300 Mb/s so the system that presents the problem has both an I/O subsystem with higher performance and the machine that is doing iscsi traffic is able to generate more than 3 times i/o operations Unfortunately, dstat default output doesn't capture VM statistics. Do you have any idea what was the VM consumption when you saw the problem? Assuming it is buffered I/O, Your VM will soon be consumed (as I see from dstat logs that the CPU was in wait for a very long time) and then start paging. And this is the scenario, where linux tends to succumb, still. On your faulty setup, can you try unbuffered direct I/O and see if that can trigger the problem? I have low hopes that that will fail. To trigger (direct) I/O, you can use fio tool. It is already pre-packaged in Debian. at the moment I am not able to tell which of these aspects, or the sum of them, create the condition for the problem: I suspect that it's a mix of all these unfortunately at the moment I do not have hw similar to the one in production to perform a test in the same conditions. 2) san00 presents the problem event with deadline scheduler active on all logical volume exported through iscsi or used by the heavy load operation (dd) 3) on san00 I was able to reproduce the problem in a simpler condition than the one I described in the first mail: just one node connected through iscsi, the other node was restarting, no virtual machines running on the node, the node was performing one i/o intensive operation on one of the lv exported by iscsi/lvm (an fsck on one file system) during this operation I launched a dd on san00 and the iscsi connection was dropped after a few seconds I think it is the typical linux I/O controller problem, which I believe is a combination of I/O Scheduler + VM Subsystem. I am attaching 3 files: dstat output during the test and an extract of /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog I have just filtered out information for non relevant services (nagios, dhcp, snmp, postfix, etc.) both for readability and confidentiality ietd was running with the following command line /usr/sbin/ietd --debug=255 so in the log we have debug information the problem can be seen in syslog at Jun 14 01:28:53 at Jun 14 01:34:06 I turned off the node for reboot and in the log there are some record regarding termination of iscsi sessions I do not see anything relevant in ietd debug log, just a restart of the connections in dstat output the dd operation was started around line 197 and was terminated at line 208 (I interrupted the operation as soon as I saw the problem) what I see in dstat output is the following: dd for some seconds (about 10) does not generate a lot of read and writes usr sys idl wai hiq siq| read writ| recv send| in out | int csw 7 2 56 35 0 0| 12M 14M| 22k 35k| 0 0 |441512k 12M read and 14M write, and this could be from the dd operation or the fsck performed through iscsi then there is a burst of write, I guess using the full I/O capacity of the controller and of the disks usr sys idl wai hiq siq| read writ| recv send| in out | int csw 35 7 35 22 0 1|8180k 325M| 38k 25k| 0 0 |686011k 2 3 59 36 0 1|3072B 541M| 20k 26k| 0 0 |5380 2747 3 4 64 30 0 0|5120B 473M| 21k 30k| 0 0 |475216k write 325M, 541M, 473M and this is exactly the moment when the problem arise could it be that the i/o operation are cached in memory and the problem presents when they are flushed to disk? Bug#630453: the tutorial's license don't pass the free island test
Hello Timo, Berndt, David, @Timo, Berndt: thank you for raising this issue. @David: The bugreport raised by Timo and Berndt is available at http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=630453 @everybody: There are two solution for this issue: - the license of the file kicad-doc/doc/tutorials/en/KiCad Tutorial.odt is changed to become DFSG-free (definition at http://www.debian.org/social_contract) - the license is not modified, and the package must be split into two distinct Debian packages, kicad and kicad-tutorial, the first in the section main, the second one in the section non-free. kicad should Suggest kicad-tutorial. In the second case, I would like to ask Timo and Berndt how to do this split conveniently: is it possible to have a single source package, giving two output packages in different sections like main and non-free? my idea is that it is not allowed, so I should withdraw the conflicting file from kicad's source, to build a package kicad-X.XX+dfsg, and upload a package kicad-tutorial to the NEW queue. Thank you in advance for your commebts and enlightenments! Best regards, Georges. Bug#630453: the tutorial's license don't pass the free island test
Hi, Georges Khaznadar georges.khazna...@free.fr writes: is it possible to have a single source package, giving two output packages in different sections like main and non-free? my idea is that it is not allowed, this is not possible indeed since non-free stuff is not ok in the source package either. so I should withdraw the conflicting file from kicad's source, to build a package kicad-X.XX+dfsg, and upload a package kicad-tutorial to the NEW queue. Sounds possible. I would rather see the license fixed though. I already started updating the tutorial with screenshots from a more recent kicad before I noticed the first page banner. -Timo -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. I believe that the output is similar if not the same on the other three architectures. ## -- ## ## Detailed failed tests. ## ## -- ## # -*- compilation -*- 359. ofproto.at:45: testing ... ../../tests/ofproto.at:46: ovs-openflowd --detach --pidfile --enable-dummy --log-file dummy@br0 none --datapath-id=fedcba9876543210 stderr: Apr 27 09:52:29|1|vlog|INFO|opened log file /build/buildd-openvswitch_1.1.0-1-sparc-z51Ogn/openvswitch-1.1.0/_debian/tests/testsuite.dir/359/ovs-openflowd.log Apr 27 09:52:29|2|openflowd|INFO|Open vSwitch version 1.1.0+build0 Apr 27 09:52:29|3|openflowd|INFO|OpenFlow protocol version 0x01 Apr 27 09:52:29|4|ofproto|INFO|using datapath ID 002320864689 Apr 27 09:52:29|5|ofproto|INFO|datapath ID changed to fedcba9876543210 stdout: ../../tests/ofproto.at:47: ovs-ofctl dump-flows br0 | sed 's/ (xid=0x[0-9a-fA-F]*)//' ../../tests/ofproto.at:49: echo 'in_port=1,actions=0' | ovs-ofctl add-flows br0 - ../../tests/ofproto.at:50: ovs-ofctl add-flow br0 in_port=0,actions=1 ../../tests/ofproto.at:51: ovs-ofctl dump-flows br0 | sed 's/ (xid=0x[0-9a-fA-F]*)//' | sed 's/\bduration=[0-9.]*s/duration=?s/' --- - 2011-04-27 09:52:29.977325874 + +++ /build/buildd-openvswitch_1.1.0-1-sparc-z51Ogn/openvswitch-1.1.0/_debian/tests/testsuite.dir/at-groups/359/stdout 2011-04-27 09:52:29.0 + @@ -1,4 +1,4 @@ NXST_FLOW reply: - cookie=0x0, duration=?s, table_id=0, n_packets=0, n_bytes=0, in_port=1 actions=output:0 cookie=0x0, duration=?s, table_id=0, n_packets=0, n_bytes=0, in_port=65534 actions=output:1 + cookie=0x0, duration=?s, table_id=0, n_packets=0, n_bytes=0, in_port=1 actions=output:0 ovs-openflowd.log: Apr 27 09:52:29|1|vlog|INFO|opened log file /build/buildd-openvswitch_1.1.0-1-sparc-z51Ogn/openvswitch-1.1.0/_debian/tests/testsuite.dir/359/ovs-openflowd.log Apr 27 09:52:29|2|openflowd|INFO|Open vSwitch version 1.1.0+build0 Apr 27 09:52:29|3|openflowd|INFO|OpenFlow protocol version 0x01 Apr 27 09:52:29|4|ofproto|INFO|using datapath ID 002320864689 Apr 27 09:52:29|5|ofproto|INFO|datapath ID changed to fedcba9876543210 Apr 27 09:52:29|6|ofp_util|INFO|normalization changed ofp_match, details: Apr 27 09:52:29|7|ofp_util|INFO| pre: wildcards= 0x3820fe in_port=1 dl_src=00:00:00:00:00:00 dl_dst=00:00:00:00:00:00 dl_vlan=0 dl_vlan_pcp= 0 dl_type= 0 nw_tos= 0 nw_proto= 0 nw_src= 0 nw_dst= 0 tp_src=0 tp_dst=0 Apr 27 09:52:29|8|ofp_util|INFO|post: wildcards= 0x3e in_port=1 dl_src=00:00:00:00:00:00 dl_dst=00:00:00:00:00:00 dl_vlan=0 dl_vlan_pcp= 0 dl_type= 0 nw_tos= 0 nw_proto= 0 nw_src= 0 nw_dst= 0 tp_src=0 tp_dst=0 Apr 27 09:52:29|9|ofp_util|INFO|normalization changed ofp_match, details: Apr 27 09:52:29|00010|ofp_util|INFO| pre: wildcards= 0x3820fe in_port=65534 dl_src=00:00:00:00:00:00 dl_dst=00:00:00:00:00:00 dl_vlan=0 dl_vlan_pcp= 0 dl_type= 0 nw_tos= 0 nw_proto= 0 nw_src= 0 nw_dst= 0 tp_src=0 tp_dst=0 Apr 27 09:52:29|00011|ofp_util|INFO|post: wildcards= 0x3e in_port=65534 dl_src=00:00:00:00:00:00 dl_dst=00:00:00:00:00:00 dl_vlan=0 dl_vlan_pcp= 0 dl_type= 0 nw_tos= 0 nw_proto= 0 nw_src= 0 nw_dst= 0 tp_src=0 tp_dst=0 359. ofproto.at:45: 359. ofproto - basic flow_mod commands (ofproto.at:45): FAILED (ofproto.at:51) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#619647: sample code?
could you please send us the reduced source code of the program, how you compiled it and all other instructions in order to reproduce the problem? Also could you please test whether the problem exists in gdb 7.2-1 (the current version in Debian testing)? If you can attach the code, I can test it for you. raju -- Kamaraju S. It's a bug in the testsuite, I think, not in OVS itself. Thanks, Ben. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#630545: xflr5: FTBFS when not building -doc package
Package: xflr5 Version: 6.04.dfsg-1 Severity: serious Justification: fails to build from source Builds of xflr5 fail when not building xflr5-doc, as on the autobuilders: install -m 644 .../xflr5-6.04.dfsg/debian/Guidelines_v604.pdf .../xflr5-6.04.dfsg/debian/xflr5-doc/usr/share/xflr5/Guidelines.pdf install: cannot create regular file `.../xflr5-6.04.dfsg/debian/xflr5-doc/usr/share/xflr5/Guidelines.pdf': No such file or directory make[1]: *** [override_dh_auto_install] Error 1 Could you please conditionalize the PDF file's installation? (You might also want to consider placing it under /usr/share/doc, at which point simply listing it in debian/xflr5-doc.docs should suffice.)
