Bug#711036: ITP: x11iraf -- Graphical tools to work with IRAF

2013-06-04 Thread Ole Streicher
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Ole Streicher
X-Debbugs-Cc: debian-devel@lists.debian.org, debian-scie...@lists.debian.org

* Package name: x11iraf
  Version : 2.0~BETA
Upstream Author : National Optical Astronomy Observatories
* URL : http://iraf.noao.edu
* License : MIT, with no-ad clause
Description : Graphical tools to work with IRAF

x11iraf provides graphical tools to work with IRAF, notably xgterm and
XImtool. IRAF (Image Reduction and Analysis Facility) is a general
purpose software system for the reduction and analysis of astronomical data.

This was in Debian until ~2004 [1], packaged by Zed Pobre, which then
was removed; mainly due to the licensing problem of IRAF. Since IRAF is
now covered by a DFSG compliant license, it is going to be packaged
now[2], and it makes sense to bring x11iraf back as well.

The package is not 64-bit clean (and probably never will, according to
upstream [3]), so the build will be limited to 32-bit platforms.

Cheers

PyRAF is a command language for running IRAF [1] tasks that is based on
the Python scripting language. It gives users the ability to run IRAF

That's not necessarily true as a result of it being a 1.0 format package
(there were ways to use quilt patches with the 1.0 format), but it is
certainly true in this case.

Well, we already all do that with our plentifull spare time, don't we?

At least I see nothing about the bugsquad team having (or needing) any
special power any DD (and non DD with a sponsor) already has. But that
is on the bug side.

More importantly is probably: What is the benefit for someone joining
the bugsquad team?

For example: Will there be some organization and sharing of skills
that make it easier to fix bugs? Like for someone with knowledge in C
to join up with someone with knowledge of maintainer scripts to fix a
bug that involves both (sorry, it's hard to think of examples).

I think finding volunteers will be the problem so you need to create
some incentive for people to join the team instead of going at it
alone.

MfG
Goswin

PS: Another thing the bugsquad team might do is help with organizing
bugsquash parties. Collect instructions on how best to organize such
an event. Help with getting sponsors and how to give feedback to
sponsors so they feel like their money is well spend and such.

I think that is a bad example. The reported error does appear when
unpakcing php5-common even if it is not caused by the package directly
but by something (ucf) it uses. It is often not clear for users if the
bug is caused by passing the wrong arguments or by a bug in the tool
being used or that a tool from another package is used at all. As
maintainer you tend to have a better understanding and can more esily spot the
right package to blame.

I don't think you handled that bug correctly. It was a valid bug and
you just closed it without fix. A simple "bts reassign 709568 ucf"
would have sufficed.

Wrong bug number? Did you mean #707237, which was filed a day after
707131?

Candidates for removal from testing (2013-06-04)

2013-06-04 Thread Niels Thykier
Hi,

Our automated tools for finding RC buggy leaf packages in testing have
found 79 potential candidates (see attached files).

The packages have been selected based on the following criteria:
 * The package had at least one RC bug without activity for the past
   14 days.
 * If a bug is assigned to multiple packages, both packages will be
   affected.
 * The RC bug affects both unstable and testing.
 * The affected package does not have any reverse dependencies in
   testing.

Normally, I would manually review[1] the list first before sending it,
but I do not have the time for that right now. And one more time to
make sure everyone noticed it:

*The list is unfiltered and may include entries it should not.*

If a package you care for is on this list, please consider looking into
these bugs (sooner rather than later). This mail (unlike previous ones)
do not include a fixed deadline for these[2], but if time permits I may
follow up with deadline and a filtered list.

Fun fact: According to UDD[3], 79 RC bugs is a bit over 10% of all RC
bugs affecting Jessie.

Thanks,
~Niels

[1] We normally filter out certain type of RC bugs (incl. but not
limited to license issues), where we consider it unreasonable to demand
a resolution within the usual deadline (i.e. 14 days of "non-activity" +
7 days after a d-d notice).

[2] Note that if some of these packages block transitions, we may end up
removing them to finish the transition rather than waiting for you to
fix them.

When the source does not come with a configure script, which usualy
means debain/rules then runs autoreconf or the like, doesn't it make
sense to also rely on autotools-dev and NOT ship the config.sub/geuss
at all? The choice to ship one but not the other seems to me to be a
bit stupid. Esspecially since config.sub/guess are much easier
replacable.

So yes, please do scan for this. Seems worthwile even without the
legal mubo jumbo.

mount point gets "(deleted)" / unable to unmount

2013-06-04 Thread Florian Lohoff

Hi,

with wheezy i get more and more annoyed by the "(deleted)" renaming of
mountpoints when nfs server are unreachable.

With squeeze i automatically unmounted nfs servers on suspend. With
wheezy this doesnt work as the real mountpoint cant be found.

The kernel renames the mountpoint from e.g. "/nfsmnt" to "/nfsmnt (deleted)"
and as /etc/mtab is a link to /proc/mounts today there is no way to
determin the real mountpoint.

Trying to unmount "/nfsmnt (deleted)" returns an "is not mounted (according to
mtab)"

IMHO i see 3 bugs at least in this:

a) Renaming of mountpoints in the kernel - Appending some random string
might clash with other mountpoints - probably intentional.
b) /etc/mtab would list the real mountpoint if under control of mount.
Now as we have a) and /etc/mtab beeing a symlink to /proc/mount we
have broken data in /etc/mtab too.
c) mount has a broken parser for mtab/mounts.

Real life example:
flo@p2:~$ cat /proc/mounts | grep nfs4
pobox:/scratch/local /scratch/pobox\040(deleted) nfs4
rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,vers=4,rsize=262144,wsize=262144,namlen=255,hard,proto=tcp,port=0,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys,clientaddr=192.168.177.145,minorversion=0,local_lock=none,addr=192.168.177.1
 0 0

I cant unmount the original mount not with -l nor with -f - both hang.
The real problem is though that i am unable to mount new nfs or cifs
shares as mount hangs in a readlink:

readlink("/sys/kernel/debug", 0x7f59ac90, 4096) = -1 EINVAL (Invalid
argument)
readlink("/scratch", 0x7f59ac90, 4096) = -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument)
readlink("/scratch/pobox", ^C

Thanks a lot for this initiative! I hope this leads to a shorter freeze this

MUAs tend to present mail in "folders" by "accounts". They can be
configured to display local mail in a folder with an explicit title.

In addition, we can push a localized mail to each newly created local
account, such as "Welcome to Debian, this mail folder usually contains
only system messages blah blah" so that people know what to expect
here, especially for the user to which root's mail is forwarded.

Kind regards, Thibaut.

clang.debian.net lists 39 instances of these, though I think the buildd
is a bit behind so there are probably a few more. I think it's still
worth reporting.

The case I'm personally aware of whose upstream maintainers were
historically most attached to its uses of nested functions and where the
changes to avoid them were most complicated was GRUB. In that case,
Vladimir and I recently removed all the uses of nested functions
upstream, and the 2.01 release will not use them. If it helps you to
make arguments to other upstream maintainers, here's the rationale I
posted for pushing this work:

His reports usually come in annoyingly short texts with nothing more
than "It does not work". I get the same feeling as you most of the time
and tempted not to respond. But one in his may reports, he is the first
one to remind me of the real bug.

merge/wishlist/wontfix via bts script ... may be a good way to keep
the noise level low on your package BTS web page.

The xgalaga++ rules file does not use dh, nor does it use any dh_auto_*.
So how can detection of build system have anything to do with it?

You need to do better than that for this to be a valid bug report
against debhelper. Even if it were, it's very unlikely it would have RC
severity.

Why would I when he was able to fill the same error in grub-pc (#709567)

Bug#711099: ITP: libnet-ssh-perl-perl -- Perl client Interface to SSH

2013-06-04 Thread Maximilian Wilhelm
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Maximilian Wilhelm

* Package name: libnet-ssh-perl-perl
  Version : 1.35
Upstream Author : Benjamin Trott, David Robins,
* URL : http://search.cpan.org/dist/Net-SSH-Perl
* License : Perl
  Programming Lang: Perl
Description : Perl client Interface to SSH

Net::SSH::Perl is an all-Perl module implementing an SSH client.
It is compatible with both the SSH-1 and SSH-2 protocols.
.
Net::SSH::Perl enables you to simply and securely execute commands on remote
machines, and receive the STDOUT, STDERR, and exit status of a remote command.
It contains built-in support for various methods of authenticating and
completely implements the I/O buffering, packet transport, and authentication
layers in pure Perl.
.
One advantage to using Net::SSH::Perl over wrapper-style implementations of
ssh clients is that it saves on process overhead. Depending on the amount of
time and memory needed to fork a process, this win can be quite substantial;
particularly if you're running in a persistent Perl environment (mod_perl,
for example), where forking a new process is a drain on process and memory
resources.

Hi,

about vlock (I use it), IMO the critical bug should have less severity
(not grave, perhaps important).

If the package maintainers are busy, I could help them.

Yeah, quilt is a regular program, of course, so the package can just
Build-Depend on quilt and run it during the build. There were various

Please be not offencive but im my jidani report was useful twice. I found a
quoted message on Google on the bug list archive.

I agree that for a packager (I package imagemagick); a bug about incorrect
punctuation sign in man page is worthless but it is a bug and I could be
prioritized. And it your job as packager.
