Package: libc6
Version: 2.5-11
Severity: normal

Since #374945 has been closed and indeed archived, the patch fixing it
has been backed out. I can't reopen that bug, but please consult
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=374945.html for the
background information.

Essentially, ldconfig is run after every lib*.deb package is updated
in a dpkg run. This can be hundreds of times in a move between debian
releases. After each time ldconfig is run, on machines with less than
about 256MB, everything ldconfig dealt with has long been purged out
of filesystem cache by the time the next package comes along to run
ldconfig (on my 256MB machine, dpkg can be updating two library
packages successively, and nothing remains in cache by the time the
second library has installed its files and runs its postinst scripts).
So when everyone claims that it's not so bad that ldconfig is run
multiple times, because the second time is always much quicker, they
are operating under the hidden false assumption that everyone is
blessed with a machine with more than 256MB. They didn't even become
universally common until about a year ago in these quarters and I
still see plenty of new machines with only 256MB on dell's website.

Now the cause of the problem is that for every ldconfig call that
ought to just update the symlinks of the one package in question, and
perhaps update the ld.so.cache file (although on a quick glance
through an strace call to a typical program, that appears entirely
unnecessary), an open(), fstat64(), and crucially, a mmap() and hence
presumably, slurping in some of that file's contents, is done on every
file in every lib directory. All of that, for every file, has to fit
in cache, if the second invocation to ldconfig a few seconds later is
going to take any less time than the first.

Package: tzdata

I am trying to set timezones using tzconfig to their GMT offset versions
(using option 12, then specifying a GMT+/- choice) and the actual values
seem to be the opposite of what I'd expect (i.e. GMT+X actually sets to
what I'd expect for GMT-X).

For example:

Your default time zone is set to 'Etc/GMT+2'.
Local time is now: Wed Feb 20 19:28:39 GMT+2 2008.
Universal Time is now: Wed Feb 20 21:28:39 UTC 2008.

* in this case, I'd expect the time to be 23:28:39

Your default time zone is set to 'Etc/GMT-2'.
Local time is now: Wed Feb 20 23:29:29 GMT-2 2008.
Universal Time is now: Wed Feb 20 21:29:29 UTC 2008.

* in this case, I'd expect the time to be 19:29:29

I did also test in 2006l-1 and 2007b-1 before 2007j-1etch1. I have not
tested in 2007j-1etch2 or 2007k-3, but did not see any bug reports that
indicate this issue has been resolved in a newer version.

thanks

This is actually not a bug, this is how System V timezones works.

Please don't use the hosts cache, it's documented in lenny, not in
etch sadly, but it has way too many issues. If you need a lightweight
*working* DNS cache, use pdnsd.

Bug#467609: failed assertion in nscd (hstcache.c:364) on host name lookup

2008-02-26 Thread Fabien COUTANT
Package: nscd
Version: 2.3.6.ds1-13etch5
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

This looks a lot like #451552, except the bug *still* occurs on more
recent versions. I expect this grave bug would have been fixed
_in_etch_ by the time...

Setting debug-level to 16383 in /etc/nscd.conf, and running nscd -d in
a terminal gives the following crash before a few minutes to hours (even
when nscd was started after invalidating the caches with nscd -i):

[...cut...]

Of course, after the crash all networking is slowed to a pain since
name lookups aren't cached any more... and the lack of cache also has
impacts on other tables :(

Since the process isn't rock solid, it has become unusable... one
can't go restart it every time it crashes, it would be far too often.

It is actually what is implemented.

IP on different subnet are not sorted, IP on some local subnet are
sorted by a longer common prefix with the interface address.
