You can tune Squid for different amounts of memory use. When I first used
Squid I had only 16M of RAM and it was fine. Of course it depends on how
many other things you run on the same box.

I think your right about not enough RAM. I have a small system - P133 w/ 96M and it
runs squid. The startup and shutdown take a minute or so but after that, it's not a
problem.

PS, I also have some more memory on order, so it won't be a problem for
long!

Cheers for the suggestions,

reports a timeout after 3 seconds. What I want are
 recommendations for proxy
 programs that I could use.

It would be a bonus if it was available as a debian package, but I will
compile stuff that isn't available on debian.

Apache makes a great proxy server. All you have to do is enable it as such
in the config files:

#Directory proxy:*
#Order deny,allow
#Deny from all
#Allow from .your_domain.com
#/Directory

-packy

I went to see an old friend who was soon to pass away.
He said, My life has been so good to me. Now I still got one more day.
Now he said that as he watched the morning sun and then he smiled my way.
Because he said that every morning, he lived his life that way.

Or you can use Squid... probably, this is the most popular choice:
