You can tune Squid for different amounts of memory use. When I first used Squid I had only 16M of RAM and it was fine. I think your right about not enough RAM. I have a small system - P133 w/ 96M and it runs squid. The startup and shutdown take a minute or so but after that, it's not a problem.
