Re: a few newbie problems

2001-07-31 Thread Peter Billson

Everytime I try to apt-get install xxx
 I get this error:

Kris,
If you are still having troubles, it is possible that your list of
sites that apt uses to grab packages is not correct and that is why it
can't find some of the dependencies.

If you are still having trouble, could you post your
/etc/apt/sources.list so we can take a look?

Pete

I did not do the apt-get -f install.

What do I need to do?

According to the apt-get(8) manual page, the -f (--fix-broken) option is
sometimes needed when using apt for the first time. (Even though, I don't
remember this ever happening to me when using apt for the first time on
several systems.)

With the -f option, apt-get tries to fix any broken dependencies.

Have a look at the manual page; and follow the advice it gave you: Try
'apt-get -f install'.

Good luck,

Kris,

You mention this is the first time you are on Debian, so excuse the
basics:

Can you do an
apt-get update

This should show you between 3 and 9 lines of [Hit] or so.

Reply back, we will nail thin ;-)
