troubleshooting kmail
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA256 Greetings, I'm a debian GNU/linux user for quite some time now (decades at least) and am in general very happy. I've been using claws-mail as an IMAP client for some time, but recently (a few months ago) I set up Kmail (and I like it very much, as integration with gnupg was relatively painless). I am again using it as an IMAP client (with a different gmail address). I have two computers, both running debian 9 stretch. On one of them (the laptop), Kmail is functioning properly, but on the desktop machine which I'm writing from now, incoming email has not been appearing since the end of January. I don't see any obvious menu entries which would give me access to log files in order to try to troubleshoot the problem, so I'm looking for any advice as to how I might go about correcting the issue so this instance of Kmail can again receive email (it's possible that the problem is as simple as an incorrectly entered password). I'm not subscribed to this list, so CCing me is perfectly fine (though I'll monitor the web archives for responses on which I may not be CCed). thanks so very much in advance for any hints, ~c -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- iQIzBAEBCAAdFiEETiJHl0qlojpckrtNu4s9czGpNn8FAlqIRagACgkQu4s9czGp Nn9lBQ//YK55MNBbUG7qSwqIwVAgBtk85mxIG+W6h92QkSW3Gyq1VPtdjACC26G/ cRLS6Vqw4C9+6o6sukVmOTqx3ZpaIZq+PVVorzS+tlvPselfLEg0FvfxV5b/oS0k UehO2hJ6xkDPeAtD2KMsVCe6zUTWZzVJk66p4iCx5Kgw6HG1apKY2mwZQ7YggG40 /ZoLCYnT5qiMl4drPsCZBgTNTFrq+Zo/daI3PnH1sIwESXHf+qE6XZOOkT+fRG2D YpLFc3Swr3s/3FZ7pRC50rVtZvFcAVkYB19bkxuST4YxWAAuc6I7BYgaCSx2Ucz7 xeMfljrU8vLKzvHIttLAjr6K1hpRRepjvR/QfMEr2gyEEQi3/VI4CpDWv+RxDOEo OxstsS1Z0A73douvP6BHUF1OdSq9ZVuW2aRM3lWLp4TsBYnbXZyw2vdXUcYgi1jv fKsZbjj469F9nzg+DM7Bgpv/SKSbFC5fSyl7hSetb/hBssgzQXmp/u2I/M7rxV36 tV7+vG2el8DVTSTJHeQA3sBJRem1o25iBsPVdzBU28u4ClMEd5KQel8qzspKtGCP xlJvwkgugT+3uKKc3y+UlLgWOoqwFwQqmxBQIPKHR9skUdsZALIACidOstqI0+Qo lJftyy2o5noP4yes+sqOAsIGR/vtb5IHomFGaKRLXrNNGo9qXC0= =jeQQ -END PGP SIGNATURE-

Kmail - satellite server error...
Subject copied over to Kmail... As sent to debian-user list... Kmail works with the satellite server now? A long online chat and Kmail works a treat as ever. Phew Thanks to everyone for your help. It is much appreciated, and by using the ideas you put forward probably helped to get this working. Therefore you should check this out with your email provider. The provider couldn't discover why this should happen from my end. They had no problem sending to me through kmail from their end? They did describe a different configuration window, so assume they were using something like Ubuntu rather than Debian. It sounded like a more up to date kmail. I have no problem sending through the old dialup provider and have used Kmail for years. This is a new twist. I'd assume that your satellite provider is blacklisted somewhere. Dietz Interesting as well? Icedove isn't blacklisted through that provider? Kmail is? You may well be right, but why kmail and not Icedove? Thanks for your suggestions. default web browser
I have an install of sid on my laptop (with non-free sources) and the only software on the machine that doesn't come from .deb files is the 0.2 version of thunderbird (mozilla mail/news client). I do use kde (straight from sid) and X 4.3 (from Daniel Stone) (though there is probably a way to solve this problem independent of my particular desktop environment). Thunderbird automatically "makes a link" out of any http[s] url that it finds in incoming mail, but clicking on it doesn't actually do anything. I can right click on the link, (and choose "Copy Link Location") and then paste that link into the browser of my choice (mozilla or konqueror), but this is slightly cumbersome. Does anyone have any suggestion as to how I might be able to configure something so that when I left click (or middle click) on the link in my thunderbird mail client that it would automatically open a new browser (window or tab -- i don't care which) for either mozilla or konqueror? thanks so much in advance, ~c
Re: KDE 3.1.1 for woody + updates
Once again, thank you so much for providing these .deb files, they're fantastic. I have gotten into a situation on one machine (which uses all three source lines: kde X11 and Printing) which I *think* I have traced to an error in the http://ktown.kde.org/~nolden/X11/dists/stable/main/binary-i386/Packages file. The problem seems to be that xlibs-data is listed with Version: 4.3.0-0woody3 when truly there's a 4.3.0-0woody4 deb file available on the site which should be used instead. In case i'm completely misdiagnosing the problem, here's the actual error i get: debianask:~# apt-get install xlibs Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed. The following information may help to resolve the situation: Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies: xlibs: Depends: xlibs-data (= 4.3.0-0woody4) but 4.3.0-0woody3 is to be installed E: Sorry, broken packages again, thanks very much for providing these packages, they're quite a valuable resource for me, ~c

Sign on as root, then run this: sleep 310; find /var -mount \( -type d -o -type f \) -mmin -5 This will find anything modified in the last 5 minutes on the /var partition. This should be enough to get you started finding the problem.

You're thinking of this document: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/FDU/ which covers how to get TT fonts installed and anti-aliased. I've got them installed and anti-aliased just fine but KDE doesn't see them. Gnome tools and gronky old X tools do. So I'm thinking I'm missing some KDE specific index file but I'm not sure what it is. I suppose it's also possible I've got some bad configuration that KDE chokes on but gnome and X just breeze past. I appreciate the help though. This document http://www.paulandlesley.org/linux/debian_tt.html might be more relevent for me although it is old.
Fonts on KDE
I've got Debian sid (2.4.18 kernel) with kde 2.2.2 installed on my Omnibook 500. I'm having a hard time getting fonts to behave. Is there a decent FAQ covering font installation? I'd really love something with a troubleshooting diagram. I have anti-aliasing working. My problem is KDE itself only seems to recognize about 10 fonts in the look & Feel:Fonts panel (courier 10 pitch, nimbus, a few others). KDE will render Helvitica but I can't select it in the picker. KWord also seems to let me select from about 10 different fonts. This is a KDE problem since gfontsel seems to recognize over 100 fonts, including my true type fonts, but it has problems with some (not all) 2 byte fonts. gfontview seems to render everything as long as I point it at the right directory. Crufty old xfontsel seems to recongnize all my fonts and renders them just fine. "xlsfonts | wc -l" gives 5462, so there are plenty of fonts installed as far as X is concerned. How do I get KDE to at least recognize my TT fonts? Thanks for any help Charlie.
