Dear Norman, I really appreciate your work in the KDevelop's CVS debian dir. Popularity contest and KDE packages
Hello, Recently I checked the popularity contest's result and found the following: There is not a single KDE package in the top 200 votes... The first KDE packages were kdelibs-bin (221), Konqueror (243th), kdm (248) and kicker (261)... I know that KDE is relatively new (at least in Debian) and not too many users participate in such a survey, but this was really surprising... Therefore I invite all of you to participate in this survey to have any realistic numbers about KDE users under Debian... Best regards, Tamas PS: apt-get install popularity-contest

RE: web page for kde on debian
Hello, I'm the maintainer of http://mypage.bluewin.ch/kde3-debian/. This site was dedicated to help the users in those times, when we had no official or even working KDE 3.1 Debian packages available. Fortunately, many good things have happenned since that time. Some of these, like what Karolina or Ralf did, not to mention the official developers. As I predict KDE 3.1 will become __finally__ part of the official Debian distribution, I do not feel any need for further maintaining this site. I will declare obsolete soon. Best regards and keep your good work and let Debian be the best KDE 3.1 distribution. RE: Gideon package for Debian (CVS 2002-10-09)
Hello, So basicly I used the earlier CVS version and modified that one. Then you upgraded, and we have two different versions. Yes, meantime I reviewed the files in CVS and compared to mine. BTW, have you tried the current CVS version out, is it working for you? It takes a lot of time to rebuild and test the settings, so I haven't tried the current CVS version yet... Some difference, I have found: - Gideon or kdevelop package names (I could change mine to Kdevelop back, since it is now getting stable) Debiandirs: - --enable-debug / --disable-debug mode (which should be preferred?) - --disable-rpath (?) - configkdepim probably not necessary in the CVS-version Control: - package names (e.g. some experimental packages have names kdelibs instead of kdelibs4) -> kdelibs | kdelibs4 is more general IMHO... - libqt vs. libqt-mt -> both should be supported the same way -> libqt3-dev | libqt3-mt-dev - kprof could be suggested as well ... Any comments/suggestions welcome... List of available KDE3 Debian packages with versions
http://mypage.bluewin.ch/kde3-debian/3.0.3/packages.html http://mypage.bluewin.ch/kde3-debian/3.1/packages.html (beta1) Since we have a bunch of active packagers and apt-sources, many people might be confused about the latest/actual/working versions of KDE3.0.3/3.1beta1 packages available for Debian. Recently I compiled a -not complete- list, but enough for an average user. This list could be handy to answer these type of questions, and prevent others like, "Is xyz package available for KDE3.x.y?" Again, if you know any other existing package, I will gladly update this list... Enjoy, Tamas PS: I plan to update another script, to help to mirror these packages locally, allow people in local communities to distribute the packages, and reduce the traffic on original sites...

This should be posted on debian-kde... Tamas -Original Message- From: Ignacio Solis [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, September 18, 2002 9:38 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: kde3 & debian & xinerama Hi. This is just a small bug report on the KDE 3.0.3 packages for debian. I just installed them yesterday so I haven't looked too much into the problem to submit a patch or anything. I didn't think this was for debian-devel so you seem to be a good choice to send it to. KDE3 has problems initializing in Xinerama mode. With my kde2 files (already working on xinerama) kde3 starts fine. If I erase .kde and .kderc KDE3 tries to initialize/etc but it doesn't complete. After restarting a few times it almost finishes starting but doesn't initialize completely the panel. If I disable xinerama in X the initialization works fine, but it doesn't let me enable kde-xinerama support. I don't know if this is KDE3 issues or packaging issues, haven't tried other kde3s with xinerama. RE: KDE debs building
Glad to hear the initiative. First of all, credit to all packagers, it was a good work... IMHO, the current practice (everybody creates own packaging for KDE) needs to be changed. The debian directories in CVS used to be outdated, and this leads to duplicated (and wasted) packaging efforts. KDE package building should be repeatable from the CVS by anyone. However there are some site, including mine (http://mypage.bluewin.ch/kde3-debian, for gathering all the (often incompatible) packages and sources ), the best would be to have a single repository for all the KDE Debian packages at ftp.kde.org. Finally, individual heroes, please try to use the KDE CVS (more frequently) and let everybody will benefit from your work. Tamas -Original Message- From: Ralf Nolden [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, September 15, 2002 5:36 PM To: debian-kde@lists.debian.org Subject: KDE debs building -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, as some of you got to know until now, I switched from SuSE to Debian this week - - and directly hit the fact that building debs from CVS would work best for me to have it working the right way (tm). Now, I got into working with Chris lately and we try to fix the issues one by one soon now so that everyone can build debs himself but more important, provide debs for KDE constantly that work, where also most importantly betas, RC's and finals are provided by the day that the packages are build and work optimal on Debian. The other thing is that third party apps need to be compiled if you like to use them. Until now several people do that for the apps they like to run or that they are developing using debian as their development platform. The problem for the users is that the deb lines for sources.list are spread all over and there is no central way of getting the newest apps through debs for people that are not necessarily developers like we are. The other thing is that as developers, just doing a make install would work but that usually messes up our systems, especially as KDE has /usr as its prefix on debian. So it would be the best if we could somehow collect our resources and schedule building debs and providing them in a central place. I talked with Dirk Müller already and some other guys that I use to work with at KDE and we should provide that possibility through KDE on ftp.kde.org. Wether that will work out just depends on how many people would volunteer to participate. If you're interested, let's come together to finally end this messy system where there's certain problems with building debs for us and the KDE users using debian, it would surely make things a *lot* easier if we organize ourselves and coordinate doing things efficiently.
