Re: kdm restarts the x server twice and then gives up

2003-04-02 Thread Daniel Rolls
This looks like a xft2/fontconfig issue, you may want to try upgrading
to the version of libxft2, libfontconfig1, and fontconfig to the ones
 in sid.

libxft2, libfontconfig1, and fontconfig were all up to date but I found
libqt3c102-mt depended on libxft2. Upgrading libqt3c102-mt to the version
in sid solved my problem and kde now works fine :-)

Thank you all for your help.

After finding some have had similar trouble running the nvidia driver in
xfree86 I changed to nv but that doesn't help.

Have you tried to recompile the nVidia drivers? You have to do that every time
you recompile your kernel. Have a look at
http://www.StephanWehrheim.de/computer/dell8200+debian30/dell8200+debian30.html#X

Ciao, Stephan

I recompiled my kernel a week before the trouble started. I did what the
link desribes and it worked fine for a week. As I said I tried running the
nv driver which comes as part of the XFree86 and requires no kernel module
but that did not fix the problem.

Both startkde and kde3 do not start kde from an xterm and the default setup
of xdm does not have a select session option so I now cannot run kde
anymore!

So X starts fine? (you wouldn't have an xterm otherwise)
But please be more precise: Both startkde and kde3 do not start kde is an
absolutely useless statement.

If you want a selection like kdm has but you don't want kdm, try wdm instead
of xdm.

I found this error in /var/log/kdm.log:

Both command also cause an xmessage popup saying:

Thanks for the tip unfortunately I can select the session as kde now but
get the Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation error :-(

This has a simply meaning: the compile environment does not fit the runtime
environment. What packages do you use?

kdm restarts the x server twice and then gives up

2003-03-30 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I am running sarge with kde 3.1 from sid. My setup was fine before today
but now when kdm runs it restarts the x server, tries again, restarts the x
sever and then gives up.

From /var/log/syslog:

Mar 30 22:06:53 danscomputer kdm[17514]: Greeter exited unexpectedly
Mar 30 22:06:53 danscomputer kdm[17514]: Abnormal helper termination, code
127, signal 0

and eventually...

Mar 30 22:06:53 danscomputer kdm[17488]: Display :0 is being disabled
(restarting too fast)

I have tried clearing /var/lib/kdm and deleteing /etc/kde3/kdm

After finding some have had similar trouble running the nvidia driver in
xfree86 I changed to nv but that doesn't help.

I ran apt-get update ; apt-get upgrade today but no kde packages were
updated?
