Bug#632248: linux-image-2.6.39-2-amd64: Copying from my external Western Digital hard drive gives Error splicing file: Input/output error error

2011-07-03 Thread Deniz Akcal

I unfortunately think you were right since now both my Linux computers are
telling me that my hard drive might die at any moment but having reformatted
from scratch still has it saying that and gnome-disk-utility crashes (not
actual program crashes) on self-tests however, during all this chaos, it seems
to work perfectly fine and copying Windows stuff like games (=not data I
use/make in Linux) seemed to not causes issues even before the reformatting.
Now, nothing causes problems! (Except the constant nagging). Is it normal for
the drive to work perfectly on its way to death or is there still hope for me
(and work for you lol)? This drive is probably about a year old so I'm really
unlucky especially since it was a gift and I don't have the receipt.

I am reporting this from Debian Wheezy/Testing but this also happens when using
Squeeze's backported 2.6.38 kernel. It even occurs with Squeezes 2.6.32 main
stable kernel! It gives
the same or similar errror whether I do it via the CLI or the GNOME UI. I also
tried with superuser privileges.

I think that this error causes certain files to not be copied. Reading this
Ubuntu thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1500384) leads me to
believe that it's an issue
with external drives in general or using ext4. I tried copying using the GNOME
UI with the Skip all option when confronted with the error and I ended up
with certain files missing.
There are many more threads from the looks of it:
http://www.scroogle.org/cgi-bin/nbbw.cgi?Gw=Error+splicing+file%3A+Input%2Foutput+error

If more information is needed or if you want me to do some additional testing,
just ask.

P.S.
I also think it's likely that this bug carries through to newer kernels than
the one I am filing the bug for but I am filing it for this version since this
is the latest version that
I have tested since the most recent Linux distro I run is Debian Wheezy/Testing.

Bug#550534: firmware-iwlwifi: iwlagn 0000:03:00.0: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x82000000.

 Firmware iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode version 228.61.2.24 in firmware-iwlwifi 0.18
renders the wlan interface unusable. After a couple of minutes, the
 following message appears in syslog:

iwlagn :03:00.0: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x8200.

after which no packets can be sent, though the interface appears up.
Simply restarting the interface brings it up again.

Downgrading to 0.17 with firmware 228.57.2.23 solves the problem for me.
However, since 0.18 is already in squeeze, that version was hard to track
down. I found it in lenny-backports ultimately:

 http://www.backports.org/debian/pool/non-free/f/firmware-nonfree/firmware-iwlwifi_0.17~bpo50+1_all.deb

Googling this problem turns up hits in every distribution imaginable.
Other Debian bugs that are possibly related are 546213 and 548749.
Allegedly Ubunty Karmic Koala fixes the problem, however, package
 linux-firmware_1.21_all.deb also contains 228.61.2.24. A combination of
kernel driver and firmware version perhaps?
[...]

Presumably it was. Has this been fixed by a kernel upgrade? Is it
still a problem in the current stable release (Debian 6.0.3)?

We have seen other such issues. This probably belongs to the firmware

There's no reason to think the firmware, rather than the driver, is at
  fault, afaik.

Only the RTL8111D/RTL8168D chips currently require firmware patches. So
either the title of this bug is wrong or Norbert is mistaken about
 firmware being loaded.

Please answer this.

Hi,

I have a laptop with this wifi device:
44:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 (rev 35)

Whenever connecting to a wifi network in non-encrypted mode, the laptop
freezes. WPA2 and WEP seem to work fine.

Version 0.29 is not affected. It would be very nice if you could include
this version in a point release.

Closing, as I see no way to reproduce or investigate this.

Suddenly (after installing Squeeze) I have to use Input Attach to use a serial
mouse at
all, i.e. for GPM as well as X (GDM). So far I had thought such tricks, which
only serve
to force the consumer to replace perfectly good hardware with new one, limited
to
commercial operating systems. I think this policy should be reversed,
especially as Input
Attach does not work reliably.

I am filing against the meta package because this behaviour persists even
through kernel
package upgrades, so I take it as a matter of policy.

Indeed, and since you were not upgrading the installer could not
possibly know about your old configuration. So it is hardly surprising
that your serial mouse was no longer configured.

Your old X configuration shows that you used the serial mouse driver in
the X server, not the kernel (which is why you did not need to use
inputattach). You can use the same configuration now, if you like.

Btrfs: kill BTRFS_I(inode)-block_group

Originally this was going to be used as a way to give hints to the
allocator,
but frankly we can get much better hints elsewhere and it's not even used
at all
for anything usefull. In addition to be completely useless, when we
initialize
an inode we try and find a freeish block group to set as the inodes block
group,
and with a completely full 40gb fs this takes _forever_, so I imagine with
say
1tb fs this is just unbearable. So just axe the thing altoghether, we don't
need it and it saves us 8 bytes in the inode and saves us 500 microseconds
per
inode lookup in my testcase. Thanks,

Could you test 3.0-rc5 from experimental, please?

Your package contains new components which requires manual editing of
the override file. It is ok otherwise, so please be patient. New
packages are usually added to the override file about once a week.

You may have gotten the distribution wrong. You'll get warnings above
if files already exist in other distributions.
