The installation CD and the ftp site seem to be pushing yaboot and floppies. These filenames are not used anymore, the installation manual still mentions them, but that is a known bug in the installation manual (bug #344477). The new filenames are vmlinux and initrd.gz I you aim for an installation started with BootX and loading the rest from an installation-CD, you should use the cdrom flavour of the vmlinux/initrd.gz files, located at: http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/sarge/main/installer-powerpc/current/images/powerpc/cdrom/ I don't know where on the installation-cd these files are located. b) Is BootX the way to go? The file is 1489688 bytes, while the floppy size is 1474560, so it is 15128 bytes to huge. I had a quick look at the floppy pkg-lists, but i couldn't see anything obvious to move around to another floppy, maybe the the socket modules could move to the net-drivers floppy or something, but that is about it, and i think socket-modules is empty right now anyway. So, it would be very nice if someone with knowledge of the floppies would take a look and see where we can gain those 15128 bytes, maybe removing one of the console maps (we have usb and at, but oldworld only have adb keymaps, not sure what it maps to though), and also add the bit of code Frans mentioned the x86 floppies already have for failing if the image size is bigger than a floppy. I searched for it in config/i386, but failed to find anything that did something like this. Hi Sven, here is a patch against installation-locale, it saves about 35kB in the udeb by dropping definitions for transliteration. Since we try hard to include all glyphs, these definitions are surely useless. Denis installation-locale.patch.gz Description: Binary data

Hi, I's very nice to see a OldWorld migrating from woody 2.2-pmac to sarge 2.6.12-1-powerpc ! And that is done right now. The main issue was quik. I have a powermac 6116CD (NuBus) running stable/sarge on a 2.4.21 kernel. Whether ''supported'' or not, the dist-upgrade from woody went smoothly; though the fact that there are no NuBus cards in the machine may have something to do with that. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Hmm It's exiting me It has an Intel (x86) processor so it is completely completely off-topic on the debian-powerpc list. Take benchmarks with a pinch of salt (although it is likely much faster, mostly because of the huge increase in memory bandwdith, it's sad that no G4 processor ever had a faster or dual edge data bus). For example, you'll never get the factor of 4 on RC5. If you want to buy one, go ahead, but remember that the only (possible) advantage over any run-of-the-mill Intel or AMD based laptop is that it will run MacOS. On my side I'm expecting a G4 17 any day now (it has shipped). This will for sure be my last Apple laptop and I cross fingers hoping somebody will build PPC based laptops in the future. For me the only reason to buy an Apple system was that part of my job involves developing for PPC embedded systems, not that it ships with MacOS, iLife or whatever applications. Thanks. I will try waiting a few minutes after setting up the connection. Your delays when running route or netstat could be a DNS lookup failure. Try netstat -rn which will not try to translate IP addresses to names. Ruben wrote: At Tue, 10 Jan 2006 21:51:36 +1100, Aaron wrote: Still no joy. I suggest you ask that elsewhere According to a posting from one of the darwin developer lists, the new Intel based macs use EFI for booting. So anything that made macs what we KNEW as macs (i.e. Open Firmware and PowerPC CPUs) are now gone. I suspect that as soon as Intel can manufacture a decent 64-bit competitor to match the Opeteron, the rest of the lines (Power Macintosh and Xserve) will be transitioned to Intel. So any questions on these, and future, macs will be more appropriate to the debian x86, x86-64, and maybe even ia-64 lists (not sure if there are any non-ia-64 EFI machines). I'm going to apply this now. Cool, ... BTW, i fail to build the powerpc root floppy here, i only get the following mklibs error : bject: ./tmp/powerpc_floppy_root/tree/driver-tmp/usr/bin/eject 457 symbols, 406 unresolved Traceback (most recent call last): File /usr/bin/mklibs, line 442, in ? raise No library provides non-weak + symbol No library provides non-weak SLang_init_tty make[3]: *** [stamps/tree-powerpc_floppy_root-stamp] Erreur 1 Anyone has any hint about this ? Are other images building? I just fixed mklibs to cope with a change in readelf output on alpha; if this error isn't target-specific, there may be a similar change on powerpc that we need to cope with. If so, the output of readelf -s -D -W /lib/libslang.so.2 should be helpful here. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world.
