From an administrative point I think you can't beat Debian but NetBSD and OpenBSD are well worth having a look at. Especially if you are short on memory or HD. Solaris is somewhat a resource hog but before you choose you may really want to check support for the apps you want to run. The Linux world is a bit i86 biased so don't be surprised if there's no linux/sparc options. Problems with X
Hi! Excuse my english, I'll try to explain the problem I have: I've recently installed Debian Potato on a Sparc Station 5. Everything OK during the installation. But now I have problems starting X. It doesn't work as normal user. It works OK as root, but I won't be executing X as root :). And it should work. I have the message: PEXExtensionInit: Couldn't open default PEX font file Roman_M in xdm.log I looked for information about this and I found it was not a critic error. Anyway, I've already installed the package: xfonts-pex install Also, I have a message from kernel: Mar 2 14:28:38 conga kernel: Unknown Keyboard ioctl: 40245408 And I haven't found so information about this. Errors occur even when I run X as root. Thanks for any help. Greetings Ruben.

My experience has been that it's about as good as any other Debian GNU/Linux port. I have occasionally encountered some i386-centric things, (e.g. some packages expect you're using X86FConfig, but the Xsun server (in the 3.x packages) doesn't need it.) Generally, however, it works quite well. One thing to be aware of, however, is that third-party products may be available only for the i386 port, not for the sparc port. For example, if your work requires Adobe Acrobat Reader, you'll find it's available for Solaris/SPARC, Solaris/x86, and Linux/i386, but not for Linux/SPARC. You should check out the applications you'll need and determine what operating system they'll run under. -- Andy Dougherty [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dept. of Physics Lafayette College, Easton PA 18042

Re: DANGEROUS ?? help needed
Hi, I haven't discovered yet what happend to the symlink. I may have a bad disk or the file utilities are corrupted. I tried to compile a new kernel 2.4.1 and 2.4.2 but when I try to install the modules some of the directories made as files!! make modules make modules_install make -C kernel modules_install make[1]: Entering directory `/export/src/kernel-source-2.4.1/kernel' make[1]: Nothing to be done for `modules_install'. make[1]: Leaving directory `/export/src/kernel-source-2.4.1/kernel' make -C drivers modules_install make[1]: Entering directory `/export/src/kernel-source-2.4.1/drivers' make -C block modules_install make[2]: Entering directory `/export/src/kernel-source-2.4.1/drivers/block' mkdir -p /lib/modules/2.4.1/kernel/drivers/block/ mkdir: `/lib/modules/2.4.1/kernel' exists but is not a directory make[2]: *** [_modinst__] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/export/src/kernel-source-2.4.1/drivers/block' make[1]: *** [_modinst_block] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/export/src/kernel-source-2.4.1/drivers' make: *** [_modinst_drivers] Error 2 and file /lib/modules/2.4.1/kernel /lib/modules/2.4.1/kernel: file: read failed (Is a directory). e2fsck -n -v doesn't report anything unusual. deb-sparc X and other questions
Hey everyone- Let me preface this say saying that if the answers to the questions I am about to ask are in a FAQ somewhere, please just point me to it.. a quick search of the web and persual of the list archives still leaves me with questions, however, so... 1) What's the general state of the debian-sparc port (from a day to day usage viewpoint, rather than a feature-list viewpoint). I'm trying to decide what OS to run on my SS20, between debian, OpenBSD, and Solaris.. Basically, I want to run a bunch of xterms and a browser (konquerer, mozilla, whichever).. The key being, I want to do it in 24bit color. which brings me to my next questions. 2) What's the state of debian-sparc and cg14 support in Xfree 4.0.2? I installed debian and upgraded to woody, but the actual Xfree 4 xserver is nowhere to be found (even a quick manual check of the mirrors show it to be missing). Am I going to have to build it from source? (I have the source package from brandens site. it takes a _long_ time for the build to fail on my SM50 cpu :) Thanks in advance for any help, Matt
