 Hello,

On a SUN Ultra 5 with Sun keyboard you press 'STOP-A' to get
the OK prompt from the OpenPROM ROM software.

When the keyboard is removed, console is switched to the serial port.

Within minicom, my serial line terminal, I did send the break signal.
I was expecting to get the OK prompt, but didn't get it.

What is the way to get to the OK prompt
when the console is a serial terminal?
Actually, if the serial line works properly, you should get other
output during boot, such as the OpenPROM version and some mem testing
info if I remember it correctly.
Check your serial line and make sure the settings are correct. The
speed should be 9600 bps (Not 2400 which is a common default value in
some terminal software) I don't remember the settings for start/stop
bits and flow control, but you should be able to figure that out.
Not until the serial line is working correctly and you get that other
info, you can send a break signal and get your OK. Btw, in case you
didn't know, you send a break signal with Ctrl+Pause/Break. (On a PC
keyboard)

Re: Etch on sunblade 150 : installer menus problem

2007-12-17 Thread Didrik Madheden
I also had problems getting the kernel to load correctly over network.
My solution to this was to connect the sparc over a serial console to
some other box. Provided that the terminal on the other side is
working correctly, the installation menus will work ok, although
they'll be a bit sluggish at 9600 bps. To force the OPB into serial
console mode, you need to boot without a keyboard connected.

You may also need to give the command output-device without parameters
in OPB before trying to do that, since otherwise OPB may ignore the
fact that there's no keyboard, and still go into video mode.

Tell us your results!

 Hi,

I try to install etch on a sunblade 150, I reached the stage
where I can see the first installer menu. For those who
encountered the same problems as me, I used the boot command:

 boot net video=atyfb:off

My problem is that the menu isn't displayed correctly,
instead of colors on the border of the menu, special
caracters are displayed. The screen's background is white
and caracters are printed in black. I can't see which
element is selected, there is no element highlighted.
It's not possible to install this way.

Is there an option to pass to the installer ? Is it possible
 to disable ncurses ?

 Thanks,
 Mickaël

Installing over netboot

2007-12-13 Thread Didrik Madheden
I'm trying to install Debian on a Blade witht the help of netboot.
One annoyance is that for some reason tje image won't load if I'm
using the display as the output. I get
Remapping the kernel... done.
Booting Linux...
And nothing else happens.

However, if I force it to use a serial console, (By not connecting a
keyboard) the installation image boots fine. But the kernel output has
these lines:
FATAL: Module usbkbd not found.
FATAL: Module usbhid not found.
FATAL: Module usbserial not found.
Could they be related to the boot problem, if so is there a remedy? If
not, does it means debian-sparc is missing USB support?

But to my real problem. Later on in the installation I get this:

Bad archive mirror
The specified Debian archive mirror is either not available, or does
not have a valid
Release file on it. Please try a different mirror.

I've tried with several mirrors, same result. Does the netboot image
have an obsolete list of mirrors?

This is my image:
http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/main/installer-sparc/current/images/sparc64/netboot/2.6/boot.img

Thanks in advance.
