Re: Boot question

STOP-A, and at the OK prompt type:

setenv boot-device disk:a

Now "disk:a" will be the default.

Yeah... that looks like the battery on your IDPROM has gone kaput...
you'll have to buy a new one. They generally seem to cost somewhere
in the $20-$40 US range (I'm not sure how that translates to DM or if
it's more expensive in .de ...)

Re: xwindows for non-root users fails

Yeah... this was discussed about a month or two ago (check the archives
if you'd like). The quicky fix is to "chmod 666 /dev/fb?" and try again.

Good luck. :)

Re: [NOTICE] libc6 problems (Re: libc and other things)

1999-05-06 Thread juziel

Yeah... it seems as though the LX is the un-4m... :)

I've heard of people having audio working on the LX (with DBRI,
same as the 10 and 20, but I don't hear a peep outa my SS10).
A coworker also told me that X runs nicely in RH 6.0 on his LX,
while it croaks within 5 minutes on my SS10. (I'm dual-booting
RH and Debian.)

But yeah... it remains that 2.2.7 does not work on my machine.
After SILO, maybe a line or two is printed out (I'm not near
my machine at the moment), and the machine locks up hard (no
Stop-A's to save me)...

Eh? I tried building and running my own 2.2.7 both stock and from
CVS on my SS10... and under both Debian 2.1 and RH 6.0 ... none of
those cases would boot 2.2.7 for me.

Yes... both Debian (www.debian.org) and Redhat (www.redhat.com)
have good working distributions for that machine.

Re: -bpp option in startx

1999-04-30 Thread juziel

If you've got a GX (or an 8-bit framebuffer at least), then trying
to do "-- -bpp 16" is useless as far as I would expect.

What you can do, though, to help out is run something like
netscape with the -install option, which will give it it's
own color map.

Re: configuring X

1999-04-29 Thread juziel

If you used the virtual consoles and follow your "startx" with a
CTRL-ALT-F1 (or wherever you ran it), you'll see some error
messages. Anyways, the quick fix is to (as root) do the following:

# chmod 666 /dev/fb?

That takes care of the problem. The reason why this is so was
discussed on this list about a month or two ago, so grab it in
the archives off of http://www.debian.org/ if you're interested
in the details.

Re: Sparcstation 20

1999-04-09 Thread juziel

dd/rawrite the image to the floppy, but the floppy in the drive
and STOP-A the machine. At the OK prompt, type "boot floppy"
to boot and "eject floppy" if you need to eject it.

You'll want the rescue and root images on floppies... the
rest I believe matters on your method of installation...

Re: xwindow on sparc 1+

1999-04-08 Thread juziel

Yeah, it you do a CTRL-ALT-F1 (assuming you ran startx from the
first Virtual Terminal), you'll see that it had some "Read
Error" or so. This is a known bug... for now, as root, do:

chmod 666 /dev/fb*

... and try to run it again. This is a temporary fix.
