24bits and colors

1999-03-31 Thread Angel Martin Alganza
Hello!

I've successfully installed slink on my Sparcstation and am very happy
with it, but I have a problem concerning colors under X. I am running the
Xsun24 server, but have got only 16 colors... I'm afraid it is running on
8bits depth (am I right?). I've tried to change that, but I haven't got a
XF86Config file neither a XF86Setup binary... Could some one let me know
how to increase the number of colors on my display, please?

Thanks a lot for your interest,
Angel

It would be helpful to know which framebuffer you have. Even
some that are 24-bit capable I believe are currently supported
as doing 8-bit (which is 256 colors, BTW).

Look at http://www.geog.ubc.ca/s_linux.html and see if it tells
you anything. At worst, if you don't know what card you have,
email me the part number (something like 501-), and I can
look it up for you.

All info I can see is:

Sun GX AT&T 1134A2 9244 7495317
BT-Bt458LP5110 RAMDAC 232 9242

Does it help?

Trying that...

I had to look no further than the two characters "GX"... you
have a CG6, which is accerelated 8-bit framebuffer, not capable
of doing 24-bit graphics.

Finding a 24-bit framebuffer that'll work with Linux and
Solaris would be a chore. I personally also have a CG6,
though a Turbo GX, which is a bit faster (I've not done
any benchmarks). I also have a CG3 (slow 8-bit which is
sitting around collecting dust because it was too slow).

My advice? Live with it (still a decent framebuffer), and
run netscape with the "-install" command-line option to give
it it's own colormap...

I always wanted 24bit color for my sparc, till I found out the cheapest I
could get a ZX framebuffer (or the one of the SS-5) was going to cost as
much as my Sparc5 did... so, needles to say, I live with the ekky colors
in X. :)

Heh... reminds me... don't even ask what this TurboGX cost me. :)
Oh well... at least X is usable now...

Sun hardware is expensive, but you get what you pay for...

True, it's very nice even if ti dosnt' do 24bit color. Eventually (like
in the next 6 months) I want to get a Sparc20 and use the onboard SX
video.. however most places that have 20's up for grabs adon't have the
VSIMMs... :(

Thanks a lot... I was getting crazy trying to find it out!

Thanks again... I try that :)

Well... then.. does it make sense to unsintall Xsun24 and set up Xsun8
instead? I've got only 32MB and it would be worth it if I save some memory
with it.

I'll have to warn you, though... I have an SS20 in front of me
at work right now (my desktop machine here), and I have it
dual-headed with a Turbo GX and an SX (the SX in 24-bit mode).

The SX is so slow in 24-bit mode than I wouldn't (and don't)
run anything more than Netscape and dtmail on it. This is
permormance in Solaris BTW... I haven't tried Linux on this
machine (nor do I think I will ever get a chance to)... and
I wouldn't expect Linux's performance to be any better with
it. If you don't mind slow (like cg3 slow) 24-bit graphics,
then go for it.

One other thing... I can't seem to find it now (maybe it's
been fixed/updated), but I remember seeing somewhere that
the cg14 (SX) was supported "in CG3 mode", or something like
that... which may mean an expensive and slow 8-bit card if
this is so...

I've never tried it, but I'm surprised Xsun24 works at all for
you. :) I doubt you'd save any memory... but I figure it would
be a good idea to run the native driver for your card. Go for
it... :)

The ZX is very slow in Linux.

It was working fine for me (except that I couldn't get 24bits color :)
Anyway... it had some crashes from time to time... I hope they disappear
now with Xsun... I'll let you know...

Done! Xsun24 was taking 5436kb and Xsun takes 3648 right now... not
sure if it depends on the load it has (although I'm runing nearly the same
as beafore, included NetScape).

Blah, that stinks. What about the APx or whatever it is for the Sparc5?

That card ain't that nice either: it ONLY supports 24bit visuals and any program
that only supports 8bit (aka pallet) pseudocolor (?) doesn't work :(

Suppose to be fast... an AGP/UPA-Creator predecessor..

Xsun24 works with both. I've used it on a dual headed CG14/CG6
machine before (so one screen is 24 bit and the other is 8 bit, all on
one Xserver).

Hello!

I'm recompiling my kernel and want to include sound support... which
options do I have to enable for my Sun box?

Thanks,
