SparcStation 5 reinstall

2005-09-28 Thread Mats Hellman

Hello list,

I have an aging Sun SparcStation 5 thats been running
debian for testing. I messed it up pretty bad a while ago and now I need to
reinstall the base to get a fresh start.

My problem is that I no longer have a monitor for it. So I
was wondering if anyone knows a way to get into the install system over SSH or
if its possible to have it redo everything from within the existing
installation.

Thanks for any replies,

Mats Hellman

You can do an installation using a serial console (i.e. a serial cable going
between your SPARCstation and a PC running a terminal program).

Whether you can fix it without reinstalling depends on how it is broken...

David.

Your best bet is probably to unplug the keyboard/mouse, and use a
dumb terminal hooked to serial port A ; you can also use a common
null modem cable between serial port A and another machine serial
port running a terminal software such as minicom.

good luck,

Thanks,

I'll give the serial port a try.

You'll have to run the first bit over serial console. After configuring
networking, you can switch to a network console over SSH:

Just change the perms of /dev/fb0 to -rw-rw-rw- (chmod 666 /dev/fb0) for Xwindow
to work and create a symlink from /dev/mouse to /dev/sunmouse
(ln -s sunmouse /dev/mouse).

Hope this help.
